Hey, my name is Mabelma.
I came here because as I was interviewing BoyFugly for my blog he mentioned that this forum was a great help for him because it helped make the artist he his now. So in hopes of improving my art I come here. I've been drawing for about 3-4 years now, even though I'm nowhere near where I want to be as an artist I feel I have improved greatly from my first few drawings. As an artist I want to be able to create breath taking character design, animate fluently and be able to storyboard and make backgrounds correctly. I'm in 10th grade, taking Engineering Drawing, Computer Animation and Drawing as my elective courses. In the future I plan to work as a concept artist or an animator so I'm not an actual hobbyist. Even though I've only been drawing for 3-4 years I want to make the rest of my years worth it and improve as much as i can. Hopefully that explains who I am.

Ahem. Hi. I've been lurking the corner for probably around 4 years now, and I while I didn't start drawing back then, I feel like I should probably start a thread and get some critiques.

I've never had any art training, in school or elsewhere, so pretty much everything I know I learned by watching what people did here, and trying to listen. This will sound corny, but I feel like I owe some people here a hell of a lot. The least I could do is improve, and try to give back.

Last year, I made a conscious decision to try and learn and develop. This year, I want to add onto that. I'm starting weekly courses at a local atelier next week, so I'll add whatever traditional media stuff comes out of that.

A Sargent study (3hours? could be 4)

Some girl, tried to keep her youthful but I don't think it worked out that well

I'm relatively new to even trying colour, so usually I doodle in BW like this. Too many doodles, not enough practice.

I usually just do some quick value paintings or studies today, and really feel I need to shake things up a bit to get back to actually discovering giant flaws, since I all too often pass shitty work off as rushed, instead of just poorly executed. One of my goals this year was to be in a place where I could consider assembling a portfolio, and I wouldn't like to let myself down on that.

To be honest, I'm open to pretty much whatever, and welcome you tearing into me. Crit away. If you can think of some type of study or excercise you think I'd benefit from, please let me know, I know I need to get out of my usual comfort zone, and I could use someone to punch me out of it.

I certainly love reading webcomics and figured it would be even more fun to have a hand at it myself! Create comics for comics sake is a fun hobby, but I only make time for it once a week. Tell me what you think in either the comments here or if you like I have a comment box below each comic. I would love to hear more about learning photoshop or drawing tips. Writing is right there up on the list too! I am still new to things like website design and layout, but I feel the overall look of the website is presentable.

Now that I have free time again, I'm going to focus on drawing from life. I've never been particularly good at it, and I want to improve. I've never taken any sort of classes, so advice on how to improve learning and advice on techniques etc... alongside critique would be really helpful.
Okay, so this took me about an hour and a half before I gave up on it.
I need to improve. I'm going to try and keep this up through the break, and then next semester I start my 'freehand illustration' course (which I'm told is mostly life drawing). I aim to be at least little less terribad by then. I'm also going to look in to some live figure drawing classes, if I can find any relatively inexpensive ones.

In this thread, we post photos!

All photos are welcome, though most people post with the intention of receiving criticism so that they can become better photographers. Please do not spoiler your photos as that defeats the purpose of the thread.

For photography newbies:
What type of camera should I buy?
This can't be answered the same for every person. There's little difference in the photo quality between most major brands (Canon, Nikon, etc) so it comes down to price and personal preference. Make sure your camera lets you control settings like shutter speed, aperture, and ISO and preferably lets you capture images in RAW format. Other than that, get a bit of hands on time and see how the camera feels to you. Also remember that if you're buying an SLR, camera bodies come and go but lenses usually last while. For this reason it might be worth it to buy a cheaper body and spend a bit extra on some lenses.

Speaking of lenses, which ones should I buy?
Most kit lenses are a good starting place, though you'll begin to find them more limited once you're more comfortable with your camera. A good entry level prime lens for Canon cameras is this little guy. Other than that, you'll probably want to pick up a telezoom lens with a macro feature. This should get you set for a long while.

Any good books/sites I should read?
Lots of people recommend Understanding Exposure or the first Ansel Adams book. Don't bother buying any book that tells you how to use your specific camera model. All of that information can be found in your user's manual.

How do I become awesome at arting?
The best advice I can give is: keep taking pictures. That being said, don't just randomly point your camera at something and hit the shutter button. Stop for a moment to think about why you're taking this picture. What are you trying to show people? Is the current lighting/angle/etc going to help you show that? If so, proceed. If not, adjust your settings or body to capture it another way.

Resources/Tools:
Lightroom - Awesome software for managing your photo collection and editing RAW files.
LR Mogrify - Unfortunately Lightroom doesn't have a border option so use this tool. It also does watermarks and the like.
Canon Firmware Update - Unofficial firmware update that allows more options one some Canon cameras.
Strobist - Fantastic source on getting into off camera lighting. Don't be put off by initial complexities. It'll come.

Some Photography Stuff

Types of Lenses:

Prime Lens - A lens with no “zoom.” While this might limit composition choices, it also usually means the lens is “faster” (meaning can achieve larger apertures, usually 2.8 and larger (2.0, 1.8, 1.4, 1.0, etc). The wider the aperture, the more light gets in and therefore the faster the shutter can be which is why primes are considered faster.

Zoom Lens - Any lens that can span a range of focal lengths. For example: 18mm-55mm. There are zooms in every category (normal, telephoto, wide, and macro).

Telephoto Lens - A lens that makes objects in the photo appear larger than they were to the naked eye. This is akin to being “zoomed in.” These lenses are comparable to physically moving closer to the subject. Some distortion can occur in the form of “compressing” the distance between objects.

Normal Lens - A lens where objects in the photo appear to be the same size as when seen by the naked eye. This lenses do not change your perceived distance from the subject.

Wide Angle Lens - A lens that shows a wider field of view than the naked eye. This is comparable to being further from the subject. Some distortion can occur (with a fisheye being an extreme example). Foreground objects appear disproportionately larger than background objects.

Macro Lens - A specialty lens that allows focusing on objects MUCH closer than with other lenses. Favored for all closeups (insects, flowers, etc).

Other Terms:

DOF - DOF stands for Depth-of-Field or Depth-of-focus. This describes how much of the shot is in focus (a plain perpendicular to the lens).

Focal Length - The size of a lens. Controls how “zoomed in” or “zoomed out” the picture is. On a 35mm camera a 50mm lens is pretty ‘normal’ and an 85mm lens is a short ‘telephoto’ and a 20mm lens is ‘wide.’ On a lower-end SLR a 50mm is a little bit telephoto.

Crop Factor - The ratio of size of the field of view between various cameras and compared against a 35mm film camera as the baseline. A typical digital SLR has a crop factor of 1.6 (meaning the field of view of the digital chip is smaller than a 35mm film frame). This affects the field of view offered by lenses. For example, a 50mm lens on a typical Digital SLR (DSLR) would be the equivalent of an 80mm lens on a 35mm film camera. A 200mm lens on a typical DSLR would be the same as a 320mm lens on a typical 35mm film camera.

Aperture - The aperture is the size of the opening of the shutter when it fires. It is measured as a fraction (so that 4.0 really means 1/4.0 and 16 means 1/16 and 1.8 means 1/1.8). The smaller the number, the wider the aperture. The wider the aperture, the smaller the DOF and the more light that gets in so the faster the shutter needs to be set.

Shutter Speed - How fast the shutter fires. Conventional wisdom dictates that a camera can be handheld at a shutter speed equal to 1/x where x is the focal length of the lens. For example, if shooting with a 100mm lens, you can handhold the camera up to 1/100 sec. Anything slower (1/50 sec, etc) would need to be balanced on a tripod or monopod or other stabilizer.

ISO - How sensitive the chip is to light. The higher the ISO, the faster the shutter can be set at. ISOs over 200 can start to introduce digital noise (comparable to film grain) with more noise coming from higher ISOs.

Exposure:

There are 3 major factors that affect proper exposure: ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture. Adjusting any of these factors affects exposure unless compensated for by either of the other settings.

For example, take the “sunny 16 rule.” The sunny 16 rule is a generalized rule of thumb for achieving proper exposure in sunny conditions. It states that you set the shutter speed to 1/ISO (ie - if using ISO 200 then set the shutter to 1/200 sec), then set the aperture to 1/16 (f-16 or f/16). So a proper exposure would be ISO 200, 1/200 sec, F/16.

Now if you wanted to change the shutter speed because you are using a 300mm lens and don’t have a tripod you could set the shutter to 1/400 sec. This would unbalance the above equation, so you could then compensate by raising the ISO to 400. Now you have ISO 400, 1/400 sec, F/16. Both this setting and the one above give the same exposure.

Depth of Field:

Depth of field is affected by two details: aperture and distance between the camera and the subject. Of these, aperture is the factor that gets manipulated most often when trying to change depth of field. The wider the aperture, the smaller the depth of field. When a lens is “wide open” (using the widest possible aperture, the smallest number) is has the smallest DOF. This is useful for blurring backgrounds and drawing focus where you want it. On the other hand, the smallest possible aperture (anywhere from F/16 on most lenses to F/22 or even F/45 on some lenses) gives the longest DOF. This is most useful in landscape photography where the ideal is to have ALL of the scene in focus.

Distance between camera and subject becomes an issue when shooting Macro photography specifically. When the lens is w/in mere inches from the subject then even a “normal” aperture like F/5.6 can yield a small DOF (a scant couple millimeters). To get all of a macro subject in focus it is usually necessary to shoot a F/8 or F/11 or smaller. This results in slow shutter speeds (see above) unless additional light is brought in (ie - from a flash). Slow shutter speeds increases the chance for motion blur (especially on a breezy day or when the subject is animate, ie a butterfly).

Week 5
Go outside.

And bring your paints with you. This week we're focusing on plein air work--that is, painting outside. Landscapes, cityscapes, whatever is around you. We're going to break out of our comfort zone and go somewhere else to get our work done.

This is probably going to be hard and uncomfortable for a lot of people. Plein air painting is a foreign experience to a lot of artists, but it's one I think that all artists should experience. It's the reason I'm a landscape painter today and I hope it has a similarly inspiring effect on you.

Bring whatever materials you've got to work with and get out there.

Assignment:

20 pages of plein air drawings
10 plein air paintings
5 imaginative paintings
5 color studies from the masters

Week 2 Demo & Assignment:

Get creative.
Last week we were 100% focused on looking at the work of artists we admire. Now we're going to start working on our own stuff. It might seem a bit early or a bit out of place to be doing work from imagination, but only by continually working from imagination and pushing our creative abilities can we test ourselves and see what we've _really_ learned from all of these studies. So this week, in addition to doing more master studies, we're going to flex our creativity.

I encourage you to do imaginative work in whatever genre, style, medium, or subject you prefer. Do the work you want to do. It might not be great and you probably won't be happy with, but that's ok. We're doing these so that we know what we need to study. We're doing them so we can take the theoretical knowledge we're learning and start to apply it.

Assignment:
- 1 full-color finished master study
- 25 color studies from the masters
- 25 imagined full-color sketches

Week 3

Spoiler:

Odds are you're surrounded by countless objects you've never _really_ looked at. Only by drawing and painting them can we fully understand and appreciate their visual characteristics. So this week we're doing still life studies.

Pick a few objects from around you, arrange them, and do a painting. Simple as that.

While doing your imagined sketches this week, try to use some of the shapes, textures, and colors from your still life paintings in them. Take the things you're learning and apply them to the work you want to do.

Assignment:
20 still life color studies. Not demoed, but set up a still life and do a quick, simple painting of just blocking in the basic colors and two values per object. Try to train your eye by observing the right colors.
8 full-color still life paintings. Fully finished paintings.
8 imaginative sketches.

Week 4

Spoiler:

It's vanity week.
This week we're looking at ourselves. Self portraits are one of my favorite exercises and probably the easiest way to improve your figurative and portraiture skills.

The trouble with drawing portraits is that it's hard to find models. The beautiful and wonderful thing about self portraits is, of course, that your model is always around and willing to help out.

So we're going to spend a lot of time this week drawing and redrawing our face. So get used to looking in the mirror, y'all.

Assignment:
20 quick block-ins. Take 15-20 minutes and do a block in of the whole face. This can be done in black & white or in color--your choice. The focus is mainly on getting correct proportions and structure in the beginning. Also begin to establish the light and dark shapes on the face. Don't worry about rendering these. Just block in the shapes.8 full-color still life paintings. Fully finished paintings.
4 full-color, finished self-portraits
10 color studies from the masters. Pick figurative or portrait pieces. Even just focus in on a section of a painting to try and observe the colors in skin tones.
5 imagined sketches. Let's see some portraits of characters/creatures!
Get to work!

Hello to the artist community.

I am a 2D artist. I have been drawing since grade school but decided to take a more serious approach to my drawings sometime after high school. To be honest, I've always wanted to get fame and fortune through my drawings. I do not think that I am at a position to get fame or fortune with the drawing ability I have now. I do worry about fame and fortune from time to time. Even with anxious thoughts, I know that those thoughts are not to be worried at all at the current time. It can not hurt to dream.

I AM NO MEANS A PROFESSIONAL. One of my goals as an Artist is to heighten my ability in my own Anime Style. From experience, it is easy to make the archetype of drawing to look bad. From an observation, there is no need to make the stereotype look bad enough as it is already. I hope from improvement, I can make an Anime Style that can stand on my take on it. As well as an Anime Style, I plan on improvement on the basics and cartooning. A better understanding of the basics helps in general whether what type of art one does. Also the expressions from real life and cartooning should be complimentary.

PA is not the only place I go for my endeavors. I have established accounts on Newgrounds and a Deviant Art. I’ve also tried using Youtube. I am mostly ashamed of the DA and Youtube. I’ve made several accs on DA. I followed an early Wee-abo phase in middle school with DA. I try to not follow that model with my current DA. As for Youtube, I planed to gain fame and fortune with a vlog type artist thing with a used to be manga/comic but was really a webcomic as it was never intended to be fit in a book binding. Now that Youtube account stands as a personal account.

This comes to my next point that I want to be an active member of the artistic community. I find it that the DA community (that I can remember in the 2006-ish or so) is probably not what it is now. It is hard to make communication there. With NG, I’m trying to involve myself there as well. I tend to lurk A LOT. Most times I can not come up with words to say. I often believe what I may write down may not really contribute the conversation forward or really having no worth entirely. But improvement means being out of ones comfort zone at times.

My current projects now consist of a webcomic that I produce. I really produce it for the fun of it. I can not say it’s great but it is helping me understand how to use panels and digital painting. My other projects in my head remain till I can gain more confidence in myself. I produce my pictures traditionally then scan for digital painting.

Always was drawing throughout my childhood and for some reason or another stopped sometime in highschool. Over the years I've gotten the itch and have picked up pencil and pad for a couple months but it's never stuck. This time rather than lurk on boards like this I'm going to try to post regular updates to keep me honest and pressure me to keep going. I have no illusions of making it as an artist professionally (though it would be nice to help somewhat in my work as a web developer), and simply want to have fun with it. Eventually I'd like to fill up the couple of cheap canvases I've picked up over the years with something I wouldn't be afraid of putting on my wall.

TLDR: trying to get back into it and posting to keep me honest.

First couple drawings are all from the same ref image found on google. First was done with a brush pen, second with pencil, and third with a couple micron. Decided to have a little fun with the third since I was getting tired of the same image. I'm pretty happy with the pencil and micron ones but there are serious anatomy issues in all three.
I mostly stopped drawing when I came to the age where I realized everything I did was horrible and haven't basically picked up a pencil until this year.
To be honest I think the book gives the reader a way to get to the best result possible without too much trouble, a result which is not really applicable to most situations (do any of you draw with a viewfinder?), also the science part sounds kinda dated, but I have to admit it gives some good rules to start drawing, however I feel the need to move on from this approach to drawing. I eventually started trying drawing "on my own" and felt kinda bad about the result, here's a Bowie I wish he never sees:

(ch-ch-ch-changing for the worst, drawn from an album cover)

After a few similar result I was kinda down, work also kicked in and I basically stopped drawing for a month or two, until I realized I was never going anywhere without practicing daily, so I started producing messes again, here's some of the new things, these are exercises I did based on the book Keys To Drawing:

I also got a graphic tablet (which is actually broken, but I tried doing something with it anyway), since I'd eventually start doing most of my drawing digitally I figured it would be useful to use one sooner than later. Here's something I did to practice with it, taken from a reference image:

I'm currently following the ctrlPaint program, what do you think about it?

Thanks in advance, any feedback and suggestion is welcome
Have a good weekend!

Hey all, hoping for some feedback and critique on my first (and only) webcomic.

I've been working towards this for a long time and I finally launched my site today (success!). Since I value the AC's wisdom so much in this area, I've been very anxious to get my work up here. I don't think I realized how many hats I'd need to wear to get this comic rocking. Write joke, rewrite joke, edit joke, pace joke, sketch comic, letter comic, draw comic, color comic, publish comic. It's a lot of work, but I'm finding it super fun and challenging (in a good way). So let's get right down to it! Here are the comics I've posted so far, in the order I drew them, with some commentary:

I'm pretty proud of the subtlety of the joke here. This comic also made me realize just how hard it is to draw people walking. Maybe I should have cropped more of their bottom halves out? I guess it's that way because I only had so much space to work with horizontally (less room in my 4-panel comics, than my usual 3).

Happy with this one overall. I created a brush in Photoshop that barely tapers because I liked the idea of having very solid, consistently thin lines like something you'd see in Garfield or FoxTrot. But I've since messed with some "sharper" brushes and I think it makes the comics feel a little livelier. More on that later.

Right around this time, it struck me just how many characters I might have to dream up. Which sounds extra scary because I apparently have no idea how to draw different hair styles. Right now the comic is one-off jokes with a non-continuous storyline and random characters only created to serve that single joke. I'm willing to change this approach but I'm not sure how. I love how Chainsawsuit and Three Word Phrase can get away with this because their characters are so generic, they all sort of look the same and are only punched up in a certain direction when the joke calls for it, ya know? Then you've got Penny Arcade wich has recurring characters, who have individual opinions and behaviors - but are making random one-off jokes... which happen to usually fall upon the same topic of video games. I have no idea what to do.

I like the overall feel of this comic's coloring and delivery, but hate the final style of Chad Kroeger. Even though I think it looks like him, it looks like somebody else drew it. I can't put my finger on it, but it's not how I want my comic to look or feel. But that's the kind of stuff I'm hoping to get a better grasp of in this thread. I also switched to Ray Frenden's brush pack for PS (which is an awesome deal) in this comic. The inking brushes are pretty sensitive and can get too thick too fast. So I was happy I was able to keep some consistency here. Will keep using these and see where it leads me.

I know that more work posted = better thread, so I'll post some process shots for a couple of these:

As you can see, I was failing to understand just how to go about doing these underlying skeleton sketches. I pretty much drew everything twice. Which isn't the worst thing in the world, but failing to understand this step's goal: composition, proportions, shape, flow, etc... Right?

Moving a little more in the right direction. Sketch is getting a little looser and I'm not worrying about my lines being 100% perfect. Still a lot of room for improvement here though.

As you can see a little clearer in this sketch, I (try to) use the blue pencil as a rough outline for composition and head direction, etc. Then refine the characters on top of that with the red pencil. If I have to move something or rotate it, I'll do so with the usual PS tools. Then I lower the opacity a little and ink on a layer on top of that:

As you can probably tell I like to throw my text in there early on because I fail to understand how I could lay up the characters without knowing how much room is needed for the lettering. I'm going to have to go back and watch other comic artists approach to this, because I feel like they do the opposite: Do the initial composition like they don't give a fuck and toss the words in later, potentially covering any priceless artwork that lies beneath. I'm a bit scared to try that though. Oh, quick note. I'm working 100% digitally. Not only do I feel right going in this direction, I don't have much of a choice. I'm married with two kids and a fulltime job - so I don't exactly have time to make physical sketches and scan 'em in. Those red/blue pencils you see are from the brush pack I linked up above.

Here are my biggest concerns right now: I feel like I don't exactly have a "voice" yet. I mean, I look at the work here (and around the web) and there's just so much style! Look at how they draw ears! This person doesn't even put noses on their characters! Cool shading! Unique color scheme! Etc... And I can look at my work and realize it's very generic. I'm fine with just putting work out and growing for now, but I sure hope I can see what sticks and what direction to take my art. Advice here welcomed.

My second biggest concern is that I clearly don't know how to ANIMATE my characters. I went to school for Graphic Design and I get jealous of the over-the-top character designs and reactions people are able to get. So far my characters are very flat and very stiff. Any advice on pushing and stretching my characters is very welcome. Cartoons have no rules or limitations, why can't I animate them?

Thanks in advance!

How do you become a better artist?

Practice.

That's pretty much it. Sounds simple, but there's tons of hard work involved. A great habit is to DRAW EVERY DAY, NO MATTER WHAT.

"But I'm tired!" Too bad, draw before you go to bed.

"But I'm busy!" You will find the time. Make this a priority.

"I'd rather just relax and play video games." You can be mellow when you're dead.

This is the official 2013 Artist's Corner Resolution Thread. And these are the rules:

1. Draw every day.
2. Draw every day, no matter what.
3. DRAW EVERY DAY.
4. Sometime on Sunday, post the drawings you did for the previous week here, in this thread.

Only post your drawings once a week so the thread size is manageable. Keep the size of the files relatively small (keep them no larger than say… 600px x 600px). High quality scans don't matter, take a pic with your cell phone, I don't care. Just keep posting those drawings every week. We are holding you accountable!

If you don't think this is doable, you are wrong. I have a full time job, a wife, a kid (that I usually watch every Saturday by myself so my wife can paint), 2 weekly webcomics that I have never missed an update for, and I still managed to draw almost every single day in the past two years. If you are willing to draw every day and improve as an artist, it can be done.

Sign up by making a post stating that you want to participate. Feel free to also list any art-related goals you have for the year (draw hands better, learn perspective, study color theory…).

Drawings can be very simple to very complicated, it doesn't matter, just draw SOMETHING! Some days you will get more work done than others, this is about creating a wonderful habit that you can keep up, perhaps for the rest of your life. Photos or other forms of art are also accepted.

As an incentive (or perhaps not) for anyone and everyone who sees this through to the end of the year I will send them a piece of original inked art made especially for them.

Signups start NOW! The official day to start drawing will be January 13, and the first set of drawings will be due January 20.

List of participants:

Smof:
"My goals for 2013:
Get good at the basics, my fundamentals are rubbish
Learn shading
Learn to ink less shittily
My long term art goal is to do a long-form sci-fi comic. If by this time next year I feel competent enough to start producing comic pages I will be very happy."

Hello.

I'm really just a hobbyist, enjoying doing some digital painting. I have a tiny little wacom bamboo tablet, and a free copy of artrage 2.

My main problem is how damn long it's taking me to do drawings. I take hours with real paints, so I was kind of hoping digital might speed me up... nope

Anyway, this was my first attempt:

So I got tired after 4 hours and went to bed

Second attempt I worked out layers and how to mix and blend colours on the painting a bit better:

1 hour in:

4 hours in:

I think my problem is I'm trying to make it too "realistic". I'm not sure when to stop refining it, if you see what I mean?

Criticism very much welcomed!

Hey AC!
I'm working on a lot of new stuff lately and rather than continue spamming the doodle thread, I decided to compile any future stuff here.

I could use some feedback on this to begin with.

I like the idea but I'm not sure if the perspective is believable. I think I've been staring at it for too long and I only thought about the tilted horizon type composition in the beginning...I'm not sure, something is screwy though.

My new current goal is to finish 1 piece each week and this will be the first. Thanks for looking!

Yo, I'm just introducing myself and I heard some stuff about cool people here I guess. Here is some stuff I did.

I'm getting ready to submit applications for art school. I am curious about who(where) teaches some of the really finished styles of the pro's that post in this forum? I'm looking for direction on what I should be putting in my portfolio if I have no intention of doing "gallery work". I want to be able to draw anything, fast, like live action animation fast... But perfect.

I know when I get there I won't think it is perfection anymore, but that's when I can slow down.

So I haven't seen a thread dedicated to things like wood working and metal working so I thought I would start one. Recently I've been learning things like welding and air brushing and I thought I would put these things to good use making some tables and other things that are hopefully artistic as well as functional. I hope some other people around here love doing this sort of stuff as much as I do.

So here is a dump of things I've done over the past 3 months:

End table made of beetle kill and welded 1" steel square tubing.

End tables:

Coffee Bar cover welded steel:

My first coffee table. 2" steel square tubing and steel sheet for the top.

My double sided coffee table. 2" steel square tubing with a rust patina on one side and airbrushed solvent dyes on the other:

Acrylic air brushed on galvanized steel:

Hey! Me and my brother have been making comics (with him on writing duties, me on art) and I was looking to get some feedback on them... I feel like I've been hitting a bit of a wall lately and getting some fresh eyes would really help. Anyway, I'm just gonna post a variety of stuff, recent and less so to get some overall thoughts. I'll post the first page from each story and spoiler the rest so that the post isn't a mile and a half long.

This one was done around new year, totally digitally (it's also quite heavy on the text, which is something we've worked on):

This one's also totally digital, but I think it needs a mid-tone or something:

The most recent story we've done, which is a bit of a parody on old games propaganda ads. This first page is definitely the weakest. I foolishly drew it at A4 size... Colour's also something I need to work on:

Goal-wise, I'd love to get my work up to a standard where it could get published in some form, but I know it's a long path... I hope this isn't too much of an overload! Thanks so much if you've made it this far!

Cheers!

I made sure to take a look at the rules before posting....

Tell us what your goals as an artist are: Just to paint everyday objects that I find attractive or interesting, maybe share them with family or friends, never to sell or make a profit from.

Are you a hobbyist looking to learn to draw landscapes for fun? Id like to even just make a decent representation of my backyard in oil paint, but am still struggling, especially with the medium I would like to learn (oil on canvas).

How long have you been practicing this form of art? Off and on (mostly off for 5ish years, I have a total of ONE oil painting that I did that is hanging in my living room that I am proud to say I did, or at least am willing to tell others that I did.

Been lurking my ass off here for the past 3 weeks or so (for much longer than that in G&T) and am absolutely amazed at some of the work I see around here, some really incredible work.

I guess the reason for the post is just some idea that I am going in the right direction, I am currently taking lessons out of this book (formal or even informal classes really just aren't an option for me, I am an air traffic controller for the department of defense and....yeah....furloughs......) Anyhow;

http://www.amazon.com/Drawing-Right-Side-Brain-Definitive/dp/1585429201/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366752385&sr=8-1&keywords=drawing+from+the+right+side+of+the+brain

(Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain)

I have followed the first four lessons in the book, with the final idea that in order to be an effective painter you need to be able to draw first, so I am working on drawing first.

First lesson was to draw a picture of a person, from life. This is of my wife reading, the right hand side of her face looks odd because she was wearing a collared jacket and it was super hard for me to get even close (I didn't).

Next one was a hand image, I sat on the couch when I drew this, made it hard to keep any sort of perspective on what I was trying to draw, I won't do that again... Pick a chair and stick with it?

The last one was of a chair (one of them padded aluminum backyard chairs, Ive been drawing outside a lot because the weather is so insanely nice here). I botched it like CRAZY when I started the cushion near the middle of the page, getting started on any drawing seems to be the hardest part and its why I scanned the entire page, how do you figure out where to start?

I primarily made this post because maybe it will keep me honest during the duration of the summer so I can upload some things to see if I am improving, and so I can ask rookie questions without derailing anyone's thread.

Gonna try that "Draw an egg" thing that I saw on here before moving on to the next lesson in the book, sounds like a cool challenge.
