It was the fact that the hit landed on the head, not the shoulder or body.
I dunno. Didn't look like there was an intent to injure there to me, but he definitely didn't pull up in order to avoid hitting Booth's head.

its not richards fault that booth had his head down

    it happened so fast

it happened too fast for Richards to really pull up. Booth passed and watched it go in the worst possible spot to do it: just past the blue line.

but i still think Richards should have been suspended. Intentional or not, injury or not, Booth making himself vunerable or not, the NHL needs to start putting mandatory 8 game suspensions on hits to the head or knee, no matter who does it (looking at you Ovechkin). that's the only way people will really start to learn.

you cant suspend richards 8 games cause it was a clean hit and someone got injured

    that stuff happens

It was a clean hit if it was shoulder to shoulder. Head shots are never clean. Even if the NHL has no official rule, I'm saying they should. Modern shoulder pads are 4 inches of hard plastic, worse than an elbow pad, and yet if someone elbows to the head, its dirty - hard shoulder pad to the head, "clean hit" ?

crack down on headshots or wait till someone gets turned into a frozen vegetable from one o_O
    How injured was the dude?

it was a clean hit because he kept his elbow tucked in and used his shoulder like he is supposed to
he didnt go head hunting and lunge his shoulder at the guys head

scott stevens did these hits all the time but no one ever gave him any grief
whats with this new honor system where everytime a player gets demolished there is a fight

also apparently there is another view of the hit and he hits booth's shoulder first

I completely believe Richards tried to go shoulder-to-shoulder, and I know he kept everything tucked, didn't leave his feet, etc. But the fact is he hit the guy in the head and knocked him out cold. I've watched the replay enough to see he didn't catch any shoulder and extended right into the head.

Think of it like high sticking: you're responsible for your stick at all times. Even a follow-through that clips someone in the head is a minor, 2x if he's cut. I'm saying it should be the same for headshots and knee clipping - intentional or not, you should get a major penalty and a suspension, starting low (8 games might be too many off the bat), but rising quickly for a second, third offense.

Edit: Watch it on the site in HD
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSILVbnofZM

Check the angle at 1:16 in: direct headshot, extends into Booth's chin.

It didn't look in the replays like he was moving all that fast. It almost looked like a glancing blow but here's this other dude laid right out. I hope he's okay.

This right here is a fantastic hit at about 15 seconds:

replace 'jackets' with 'leafs' and 'road trip' with 'last 40 years' and you'll be spot on

my sister is a leafs fan and her husband loves the habs. she's expecting so I am going to make some hybrid leafs/habs baby clothes by cutting onesies in half and sewing them back together.

I like how Richards, probably one of the top three most respected players in the NHL is all of a sudden guilty of a dirty hit. It was an accident. It would have been called a dirty hit if his arm would have been tied to his torso and he got him in the head. He should get three games for not being totally in control of his body, don't get me wrong. Unfortunate? Yes. Penalty? Yes. Dirty? No.
