Worthwhile (freeware) PC remakes of console classics?

I missed the classic games consoles. While others were playing on their Sega Mega Drives or SNES, I was enjoying my C-64, my Amiga and later my PC. I only got to know console games at first hand when I got a second-hand PS2.

Which also means that I missed out on the Super Mario Brothers (okay, I did play Great Giana Sisters), the early Final Fantasies, the Shinobis and Sonics. I know that all of those games are available (more or less (il-)legally) via emulators, but that's one time trap I've avoided thus far.

Do any of you know good, worthwhile PC remakes (or, ahem, "reimaginings" that avoid the copyright issue) of console classics, whether they're downloadable or playable online? Most of what I've found is Flash remakes that have dodgy aesthetics and even dodgier controls.

In the same way that Great Giana Sisters can be a good game but completely pales in comparison to Super Mario Brothers, all those freeware PC remakes of console classics you are going to find will tend to be inferior to the originals. I hope others who come here will be able to prove me wrong.

You *might* be able to find some really fun Bomberman clones, as there seem to be a whole bunch of those floating around.

Do you have a current-generation console, now? Or do you still just have that second-hand PS2? Even with that PS2, there's a whole bunch of classic games collections you can get that will let you experience the classics. I know there's a few good Sega collections, including the Sonic collections that are available for PS2. There's the two Mega Man collections. I'm sure there are others, but these are the ones I know about off the top of my head.

And if you have a Wii, you can get to experience many of the classics that way, for (mostly) reasonable prices.

    Creativity begets criticism.

You might be interested in Zelda Classic:

Zelda Classic is a tribute to (what we think is) the greatest video game of all time: Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda. It has been developed into an exact replica of the NES version that we all know and love. Beyond that, Zelda Classic allows the development of new quests that can use either the traditional graphics or enhanced graphics, as well as new enemies, items, and challenges.

There are quite a few fan-made campaigns using that engine now.

Also, check out Cave Story. It's not really a remake of anything in particular, but it's a good retro-styled game.

Yeah, if you want to experience the classics legally, you're going to be mostly SOL when it comes to freeware. Zelda Classic is a great remake of the Zelda 1 engine, but even then you're going to be limited to (generally inferior) user-created content.

If you can afford it, there's really no way to do it other than getting the actual games. If you have a Wii, check out the virtual console. If you've got a 360/PS3, check out the XBLA/PSN (although first-party Nintendo games aren't to be missed). If not, older games and consoles are dirt cheap on eBay.

    Also, Gametap.

It's $10 a month(Though it's something stupid like $1 for the first month.) and has a few console classics.

Also if you threaten to quit, they'll give you another month free (but it's a cool service so I hope nobody abuses it).

Just a warning, Gametap doesn't work with 64 bit OS'. I had the $50 a year membership and finally canceled after being unable to use it after 6 months.
