Goatmon's just lucky I was finishing this episode as I clicked on this topic.
The creative laziness and writing inconsistencies are why I just don't like newer seasons as much.
A. It wasn't the explosion so much as the rocksalt and iron projectiles in the kit-bashed claymores.
B. It was said in the episode that they didn't know if it would kill the hounds or not, but hoped it would at least slow them down.

And A still shouldn't work: they're hellhounds, not spirits. Besides, salt never stopped before, did it? (At least not the first episode they appeared; it had to be that special powder stuff.)
