iPhone won't restore

So, my iPhone was working perfectly.

Then I upgraded to iTunes 9 on my PC and then attempted to upgrade the iPhone to OS 3.1

Spent about 4 hours 'updating' the software, but basically iTunes had hung and wasn't doing anything. Rebooted and put the iPhone into recovery mode and now it won't restore either.

Give me a miracle solution plzkthnks.

Ideally I'd obviously prefer to restore the iPhone on the PC and then load my most recent backup onto it, however I do have a (pretty old) mac laptop for work. Could I perform the from the PC to the Mac via an external HDD and then load uprestore on the Mac and then load a backup from the PC? Could I even perform the restore on the Mac and transfer the backup to the iPhone from the Mac that way?

Edit: I guess the other possibility is the iPhone software took a couple of hours to download (which seemed pretty ridiculous for a 250Mb file - do Apple's servers suck?). Is it possible the download was corrupted which is affecting the restore and update? If so how can I kill that copy so I can download it again?
