The Talking Heads - Life During War Time
I have no idea how to describe them; new wave pop rock? David Burns, the lead singer, has been solo for years and continually puts out some fun stuff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzORu1dqEE0
Nina Gordon - Straight Outta Compton
A woman with a beautiful voice and an acoustic guitar, she does some great cover work too which is why I've posted this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6D5xpCgETk
Lisa Ono
I just heard her last night in a sushi restaurant. I don't know anything about her other than the music is beautiful, her father is Japanese, and she sings in Portuguese. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1z2GnmpSJA
Iggy Pop - Lust for Life
Important guy in punk. His newer stuff is much more approachable since his talent his grown and hes become more refined as an artist. He just put out a new album that samples a lot of bossa nova type music (funky awesome shit). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQvUBf5l7Vw
Dimmu Borgir - some Hard head bangin' metal
Dark Tranquility or In Flames - transition
Shiny toy guns or Jimmy Eat World - for those happy moods
Katatonia - To just zone the hell out!
Everything Pots & Pans listed, and thank you Giga Gopher for Grizzly Bear and Outkast!
Cocorosie - Werewolf
Beirut - Nantes
The Klaxons - Golden Skans
Van Morrison - Moondance
Animal Collective - I Want Summertime Clothes
Air - Alone in Kyoto
Noah & the Whale - Shape of my Heart
Peter Bjorn & John - Amsterdam
Harry and the Potters - Save Ginny Weasley
This is filk, sci-fi influenced folk music. These guys are in the sub-genre of Wizard Rock. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE6c0sgVCog
I'm tempted to post in this thread just for the blue dot.
Oh look at that. Anyway, I totally need new music too so I will just follow this thread. St Vincent is a little odd but not bad. A lot of acts here I've heard of but not heard.
The archetypal starting point for metal these days is Opeth's Blackwater Park.
This post has a stupid amount of stupid in it. Stop being so stupid, stupid.
Yeah, you really don't know shit, do you?
It's a good starting place. Not the best album ever, not the best band ever (possibly), but a good place to get into metal. Honestly, dropping tech-death on someone is a great way to turn them off the genre.
BWP has an emphasis on melody; strong, clean production; and a good balance between musicianship and songwriting. It's chock-full of all the things to like in metal and is very thin on the things to hate. Additionally, Opeth's soft/heavy style is really forgiving on newcomers, giving them built-in pauses and easy-to-follow sections before it ramps back up again.
Getting someone into the genre is worth dropping the tr00 elitist gloves.

Good job cutting out the part where I mentioned Master of Puppets, which is the ultimate metal gateway album. I just wanted to whore Gojira they need some whoring.
And if you wanna talk about giving newcomers an easy intro using Opeth, Damnnation is obviously the best album for that.
Yeah Blackwater Pack is NOT an easy intro. It features growling vocals which tend to turn people off at first. I know I was not a fan of them when I was getting into metal.
