Learning to build a/website building programs

So, as nerdy as I am, I have never made my own website. I feel like I have a well crafted idea for one, and would like some input on how to best go about it.

To people that have done so, what was your starting point?

My only software qualifications are a tiny bit of c++ and java.

The place to start is to learn HTML, followed by CSS and perhaps XHTML. Then if you're feeling ambitious, follow with PHP and brush up on your Javascript to get into Ajax.

    Start here: http://www.w3schools.com/

As for programs, the best website coders all use Notepad*

    *not really, but notepad's great.

Unless your time with C++ has introduced you to the immaculate glory that is vim, this.

Also Microsoft's Visual Web Developer is pretty nice (also free), but you're kind of locked in to ASP.Net. This is really not a bad thing in any way.

I'm actually a huge fan of Eclipse for my IDE: http://www.eclipse.org/
I personally use ColdFusion, but that's probably something to get into after you cover the basics first, as its not cheap to get started with (special server required, expensive). Definitely learn CSS, you can do amazing things with it: http://www.csszengarden.com
