I love the job that Penny Arcade's mods do with moderation. Everyone here always posts in the right thread, rarely do you see a duplicate thread, and if a thread might be off-topic or borderline, rarely do you see someone reciting the rules to the thread author. You can count on a mod to move the thread to the appropriate discussion forum or delete it.

I also frequent a certain sports team's discussion board, and it's a madhouse. People always post duplicate threads, anytime someone has something to say about a topic it's a new thread, and everywhere are posts saying how the threads are dupes or off-topic. The mods there claim that the software makes moving threads difficult. Since they are the official discussion board for that team, I would like to see them upgrade their software, but I don't see them doing that any time soon.

That said, I'm wondering if the way web site discussion boards are run leave anything to be desired. It really is hard to feel like your voice is being heard if you post a new idea about GTA IV on the 79th page of the GTA IV discussion. Maybe your post really is a new idea only tangentially related to GTA IV. How do you know when it warrants a new thread?

Does anyone have any other ideas on how discussion boards should be run? Is it either the nice, clean PA way, or bust?

    the only thing i really dislike about the rules around here at the moment is the whole no nsfw thing

    I don't see the point of not allowing specific threads or even a forum to be nsfw, provided they are labeled.

    if it's the whole "but think of the childreeen", the minimum age to join here is 13 and if you're an internet smart enough 13 year old to end up on these forums chances are you're going to have seen boobies at some point, christ

    Why? It seems legit to me.

    The guy is saying the mods are doing a wonderful job here. He's right.

    I don't know if it's the quality of the community, the moderation, or both, but these are by far the best forums I've been to. I mean, even G&T isn't that bad, considering it's a video game forum.

    Plus we have berk. And he is the greatest.

    I'm implementing a forum in the site I'm constructing at my job right now and the guy developing it insists that forums are a magnet for spam and 80% of the posts made are by bots and blah blah blah

    but this forum is run so well that I am under the impression that his opinions are not at all true

    but maybe I am just spoiled

    The GameFAQs forum is pretty horrible.

    I mean, it's no 4chan, but it's still a pretty big pile of shit.

    I was just thinking about this today, this forum is solid. I have been on some shitty forums. This one is exceptionally well run, especially the lack of duplicate threads. And if you fuck up you're dealt with pretty quick and efficiently.
