Every now and then I consider maybe trying a tournament some time, but then someone posts one of those stories. :P

As someone who played 40k competitively during the halcyon days of 3rd edition: this is the best policy and plan. Tournament Warhammer brings the assholery worse than CCGs, and there's not even a good reason for it.

My plan is to keep playing with my friends, but not anyone that they haven't screened. The anecdotes I've heard from them (and M, from my story, has been playing for years and is hugely into tournaments) are just too much.

For more nerd rage: I also used to regularly play and run White Wolf LARPs. I was actually in this international group of LARPers called "The Camarilla". There were plenty of great incidents of nerd rage and drama in this group, but there was one particular person who stood out. In the tradition of my previous post, I'll call her "S".

Some friends and I were involved in starting up a Cam chapter and "S" was there from day one. At first she seemed like a pretty good player. She was a sort of frumpy woman and played a fairly unassuming Toreador artist character. She wrote a volume of back story stuff that was pretty good. A lot of people in these games played characters who were like 600 year old vampires and knew a bunch of famous people and have otherwise totally crap backgrounds. Her character was a young vampire, so new in fact that she had mortal children who were still little kids. You may see where this going already.

So she plays the game for like a year and winds up getting in a sort of vampire middle management job (Keeper of Elysium for anyone who cares about these things) by virtue of not having pissed in anyone's cornflakes. During this period there are a bunch of guys playing Tremere (vampire wizards) who are involved in a scheme to get one of their own installed as Prince (ostensibly the leader of the city). For some reason I don't really remember, a couple of these guys get it into their head to fuck with S. They do so by abducting and killing her kids and having the corpses made into dolls and then delivered back to her.

As you may have predicted by now, S absolutely loses it. She is full on screaming, crying, pulling her hair out and trying to attack these two guys when the plot is revealed. We played at a university at the time and the security guards showed up. They wound up restraining her and escorting her out of the building. We very nearly all got kicked out and she very nearly had the actual cops called on her. I had been running the game that night and I got home to a blistering email from her about how I've ruined her life by allowing this to happen. These emails keep showing up, too. By the morning I have like twenty emails from her about how she hates everyone at the game, we're all awful people and she is never coming back.

Now, I really wish I could say it ended there and she never did come back. A couple months later she sent me another email where she apologized for over reacting and asked to come back. The Camarilla has a whole bunch of stuff for disciplining people but no one had bothered since by this time we'd assumed she was gone. At the time, I thought to myself that she had otherwise been a decent player and deserved another chance. So I'm like, sure, if you feel like playing again you're welcome.

Well, she comes back and basically goes on a slow burn revenge plot against these guys. The Camarilla had some mechanisms for playing with others through email lists and IRC. S had been involved in this before but dove into it afterward. She was specifically recruiting powerful allies to fuck over these Tremere guys. Not just the two involved, but all the other ones who were even peripherally involved. I remember thinking to myself that this was actually a pretty cool example of a player driven plot. Ooops.

So more time goes by and S is continuing her crusade. She managed to get the two Tremere involved killed in the course of all this stuff. She's now fairly tangled up in some cross city plots and has begun "proxying" her character. This means her character is visiting other cities though S isn't going anywhere herself. This involves a certain amount of bureaucracy as well as in game danger, and so I'm involved because I'm running the game and need to sign off on things. Well, it turns out that S must have screwed with the wrong person some where because some one decides to kill her off in some other city where he has proxied her character.

Once again, complete shit storm. Angry, angry emails are sent everywhere. It becomes an international incident with the game's bureaucrats getting involved. Then the real shit starts to happen and the guy up the chain from me (I had fobbed basically everything off on them as I didn't want to deal with it) is contacted by her psychiatrist. Apparently the psychiatrist is concerned that S is going to self harm if her character is dead. I am unsure exactly what is said beyond this, but the end result is that S catches a permanent ban from the organization.

Yeah I played back in those days as well, tournament warhammer turns people into psychopaths.

Maybe it's because people spend so much time with those books, and painting, and then there is the money investment.

On to turn around and get rolled by somebody that made a really crazy army.

Warhammer where you play campaigns and other silly stuff with friends, is fine. Warhammer where you play just one off win/lose for competition, bring a gun.

Also blood bowl, blood bowl makes people go insane.

I disagree with you a lot in the politics stuff, but you're spot on here.

Haven't doen Blood Bowl, but I've only heard good things about Blood Bowl leagues.

Don't play bloodbowl, that way lies insanity. BloodBowl, combines all the bad things of tournament based warhammer idiocy, and then tosses into the mix that you can permanently kill people in the leagues.

If you think warhammer break downs are epic, wait till you see what happens when you off some guys start player that they've level'd up 4 times.

Or better yet, wait till some elf player has his star catcher killed because you fouled him.

RAGE, I've seen complete mental break downs.:x

Man, reading shit like this make makes the D&D drama that I've experienced look downright tame in comparison.

I hate people who play PnP games with the 'serious business' mindset. It always ends badly.

I realize now that most of my nerd rage stories are very tame. Probably because as soon as I get the hint that someone is a nerd rager, I remove myself from their association. I don't have the patience to deal with that shit.

    Breakdown of Fallout fansites:

NMA: luuuurves F03, Rosh quit to go work for Gearbox, and now it's basically a F03 fansite, because the thread about the Fo3 sex mods is the only one that gets posted in.

DuckandCover: however, has some real nerdrage, dear god what the fuck.

RPGCodex/Tacticular Cancer get a bad rap, they run some good PARANOIA/Eclipse Phase games, and aren't actually that angry about FO3. "It's not that good an RPG, but it's much better than Oblivion, so, Beth is improving, and maybe their next game'll be something I can wholeheartedly support."

Looking back on it it's confusing. To summarize:

IN GAME: Young vampire has human children from before she was a vampire. Other vamps kill the kids. Young vampire conspires with other vampires to get them back, eventually does, but goes too far and gets killed herself. Such is the nature of revenge.

OUT OF GAME: Crazy lady loses it after fictional children are murdered in a game and does crazy shit. She calms down again some time later and plays the game again. This time her character gets killed and she loses it worse than before, threatens to kill herself and is banned from the game for life.

Basically the whole game is set up in such a way to seemingly maximize rage inducing scenarios. I remember one Blood Bowl tourny game I was playing in on the Fumbble site, I think I was playing Humans and I lost 80% of my team including my leveled up ogre, I transcended from absolutely enraged to laughing uncontrollably, as it just didn't seem possible to be rolling as bad as I was that game. I can even play online matches with the new Blood Bowl game, as I get unbelievably pissed just playing single player tournament games. Hell...the computer AI even smack talks you through chat...

This is why if you must have a back story, most or all of your close relatives have already passed away (natural causes if you're pro, horrific dismemberment if you're under 16) and you never, ever have children.

If there's anything asshole players and crazed DM's/GM's like, it's family members to hold over your head.

Okay, I'm just kidding. As long as you don't play with douchebags, it's usually not a big deal.

But seriously, keep the background fluff to a reasonable level, or it will come back to haunt you.

There is also a fine line between "utilizing a character's back story to immerse them further" and "cherry picking where they're vulnerable and abusing said story for your own dark amusement".

My old game group used to have 2 members that made up characters for our Rifts crew who would then go about finding ways to try to kill one another, up to and including just fighting things out. The funny part was that one guy made up elaborate backstories, artwork for the character, the whole nine yards, and the other guy would get a hand picking gear and assigning stats and then be good to go. The first player never seemed to mind all the work effectively going to waste, but he was a superb artist (still is), so perhaps he didn't mind what effectively became a series of artistic brainstorming sessions followed by brief and ugly inter-party warfare.

One day they broke form and decided to gang up and take me on. For no particular reason, beyond the fact my character was the highest level in the group and was currently leading our team of mercenaries as we wandered around futuristic South America fighting off the Zerg (I wish I was making this up, but our former GM of the time still gets shit about that to this day. To be fair, for as combat based a game as we played, it did end up being fun).

Let's just say that picking a fight with the highest level member of the team wasn't a good idea.

But, classy chaps as they were, no nerd rage. We did, however, end up restarting that section of the campaign, as it ended up that half the team was wiped out and the other half was like "Really? That's how things are going to go down? Fuck this shit, I'm outta here."

Background fluff for DnD can be downright awful sometimes. I was in a campaign where one player had pages of background info on their char, and it read like bad BESM fanfic. It also didn't help that the person in question was an alpha-level weeaboo, couldn't rp to save her life, and would come to game wearing her Kingdom Hearts LARP gear.

That's a pretty common feeling. I've played table top RPGs forever, gone to conventions for such, played video games forever, made video games professionally, played CCGs, LARPs, all kinds of shit...and I still see people who make me say "Well, I'm not as big a nerd as that dude."

This is where someone should put the Nerd Hierarchy Flowchart. I'd do so, but most of them seem to be blocked here at work.

My favourite is the one that has like 6 parallel paths, all of increasing nerdity, and then everyone is above Furries.

Or was it Furry LARPers who write Fanfic?

Something like that. It's on the first page of Google Image Search.

So there we were in the kitchen playing chess. It's me vs my older sister, and my mom and younger brother are watching. Being the elitist snob I am, I let my sister get me in check, but she doesn't call "check" so when she tries to take my king I call her on her bullshit (it didn't matter to me she didn't know the rule), and I explained it to her how she can't win like that. However, both my mom and brother decided to take her side and say it didn't matter that she didn't call check and she beat me fair and square.

Boy did I rage hard. I went straight to the kitchen utensils, grabbed me a steak knife, and chased my sister around the kitchen table swearing and saying she lost and I had won. I wanted her to admit that, and I was willing to make her bleed until she did.

My mother and brother held me back for the most part until I calmed down, but even till this day they still won't play chess with me. It's a story they tease me about now, but I always wonder if that is what it feels like to want to kill someone.

I think this thread is making me realize that even though I'm a nerd....

    I'm still horribly outclassed

That's a pretty common feeling. I've played table top RPGs forever, gone to conventions for such, played video games forever, made video games professionally, played CCGs, LARPs, all kinds of shit...and I still see people who make me say "Well, I'm not as big a nerd as that dude."

This thought is what has kept me out of PAX so far.

I read that as Klingon Hearts LARP gear the first time and wondered what the fuck constitutes Klingon Hearts gear.

I read it right the first time and I'm still confused as to what it means.

I guess running around in black cloaks, random spiky gray armor bits, giant shoes, and smacking each other with oversized keys?

Apparently some people Live Action RolePlay out Kingdom Hearts adventures/quests/whatever.

I hadn't heard of people doing that, but I guess it's not that much wierder than LARPing.. well, anything.

Elaborate costumes, someone in charge and a bunch of people darkly harboring desires to off half the party so more focus can be given to the seventy five page backstory/ongoing saga of their character and those under them (read: the rest of the party).

PAX really isn't that bad. You'll see a few cosplayers and such, but you'll find worse walking through a large urban center.

    On the kingdom hearts larping:

Well, now furrys have someone to feel better than I guess.

The costumes would be easy though.

    Step 1: Buy clothes
    Step 2: Grab scissors
    Step 3: Cut randomly
    Step 4: Glue zippers everywhere

    Tada!

"It's not that good an RPG, but it's much better than Oblivion, so, Beth is improving, and maybe their next game'll be something I can wholeheartedly support."

wow NMA must have changed considerably. They used to be all about Fallout Canon and "purity" and constantly shit on FO3 before it came out

I play lots of magic the gathering, so I have lots of stories. Some samples:

Last week: 50-60 person tournament in the local area. Guy loses first round, gets up, throws his deck into the wall (standard tourney, 300-400 bucks at least), drives off screeching out of the parking lot. Girlfriend is left behind and has to humiliatingly pick up all of his cards.

Same tournament - I win the first game against a guy, he starts mumbling about how he always has shit luck when it counts. Beat him bad G2, he starts whining to someone sitting next to him about how he lost to a terrible player that misplayed 4-5 times (fun fact - I didn't, once). A mutual friend comes up and says to him "hey, scrubbed out of the top 8 again? and high fives me. I'm just laughing at this point, guy storms off.

Few months ago, local small tournament. Pairings get posted, two guys are playing each other, one calls "table" (basically means I'm not moving, you come to me.) Other guy says I'm not moving. One of them says "want to fight for it?" Guy says sure so they walk outside the store and just start brawling. Pretty sure there was no past history there either.

Random PTQ last season - This one only makes sense for those who play. I'm playing BW tokens, guy is playing GW overrun. I am stuck on lands, need a 4th to wrath of god. I draw a tap land(windbrisk heights), so I can wrath next turn. On his turn he swings with everything and brings me to 2. He has probably 4-5 guys on board and I have none. He dumps his hand, playing 2-3 more creatures. On my turn I obviously wrath, and he just screams out "I KNEW YOU HAD IT"! I'm not a jerk when I play but when people nerd rage on me I find it hilarious so I'm cracking up at this point. I go on to win this game, and the guy is bitching to anyone who will listen. Best part, he tells his "bad beat" story to his friend while I'm putting away my shit, and his friend's response was "why'd you play out more guys there idiot?"

Could go on and on but this is probably good enough for now.

That sounds like the way I would have played (the angry guy), which explains why my brother destroyed me pretty much every single game.
