Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

I just failed a mandatory university class (update: I failed another one as well!))

I kind of want to get a second degree in history.

    Because one BA isn't enough.

any number of BAs is never enough, oh ho ho ho ho physics student humour

also I'm in a pretty good position with physics, I'm studying something that I'm a) interested in b) fairly good at and 3) it pays well

zot: lol if you're putting in barely any work with engineering, good luck on not getting completely overwhelmed next year

I hope my stats professor curves our grades at the end or something. Except for the first exam the class averages have been really low. I got a 66 on the last exam and beat the class average by 25+ points. I just don't want this to mess up my good grades money.

So I put off doing any work for several days, and so today I had to write two written assignments, which together totaled over 10 pages

    I am a master of short-sighted decisions

my main problem with failing stuff is that my shitty uni decided that if you have failed something you cant do an overseas exchange

which means that half the people in engineering and probably some other difficult courses are ruled out

so the only people who get to study in another country are basically arts students

I'd say university is a good place to find out what you want to do, but you already have a job, so you're up on me

Well yeah I do kinda resent the fact that I'm missing out on the whole university thing where I get to mingle with other youthful, like-minded people and do awesome stuff and basically just be a uni student, but on the other hand I've already kinda got my foot in the door when it comes to working in the field I enjoy, and I'm saving some pretty mad cash which I'll be able to invest in property and shares or use as capital to fund my own startup business or whatever so... I once again don't know where this post is going.

you're comp sci though, I'm in Engineering

it'll be useful just only really the basics will be needed

Yes, most jobs prefer to hire people who only learn the bare minimum.
    Good luck with that.

People who get into school and immediately start saying nothing is useful = usually end up nowhere because:
a - they are fucking morons who never learn
b - they aren't, but have intensely huge egos, and don't get hired because nobody wants to work with a know-it-all fuckwad.

So which will Zot end up as? Stay tuned...

welp, I guess my professors haven't gotten anywhere, because the majority of them have said that most of the stuff im learning right now isn't all that useful (except for maybe calc, which is just a review)

you aren't in engineering, you know dick-all about the program and, as such, you have absolutely no real opinion on the matter

unless usagi comes here and whips my ass for sayin this shit, I stand by my opinions

    I'm sitting on two A+s, an A, a B+ and a C+ at the moment

It depends completely on what field you are in. You might use it. The reason it's called engineering is because none of us hold english degrees and we can't think of another word for builds stuff.

Secondly you're right, I have not actually used any of the calculas I learnt at uni! I've used a bit of statistics but that's about it. It's not about needing to use it though, it's completely about recognising processes so when you see someone using it you know what the fuck they are on about. So while your professors are right that you wont be using it, you sure as shit need to recognise it.

    um

    1) be awesome
    2) do a bunch of classes about stuff I'm interested in
    3) continue being awesome while doing #2
    4) profit

I feel your pain. I pretty much failed at Logic class recently; even though I like that kind of stuff, I'm just not good at it. Just like with strategy games.

The good thing is, Logic isn't mandatory for me. I'll just take theoretical and practical philosophy next, which shouldn't be too hard.

By the way, here in Germany, it's pretty much standard to study longer than "recommended" because you can't physically pack all the classes and tutorials in just one week without some of them overlapping.
You're SUPPOSED to only study for about 6 semesters, though. :?

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.

man you failed some stuff who cares
    add a year whatever

one of the first things they told us at the start of my degree is that only about half the people in the faculty will actually graduate in 4 years
im not sure if double degree students were included in that but the implication was that heaps of people are gonna fuck up and drop out or just extend it out a bit

but it doesnt make a big difference

dont start tryin to pack everythin together to save time
it can work but if you dont work super hard its a bad idea
even if you work pretty hard its not great because you will have a hard time getting any decent marks

and if you dont work at least a bit harder than you do now you could just fail more shit

It's mostly just that I'm really really bad at pure stuff.

  • SithDrummerSithDrummer Registered User regular
I started out in engineering and very quickly learned that I hated most of the applied stuff

about the closest I can stand (enjoy actually) is cryptanalysis/cryptography, so that's kind of my fallback route if, by some horrible chance, it turns out that I hate research

cryptography is really interesting to me, but again, I'm awful at it. I don't get how maths research works to start with, with any science you can at the very least just do what your adviser says.
