Whether they are encouraging or discouraging depends on the moods of those around him.
*potentially encouraging = comforting
discouraging = terrifying
illgottengains:
Was drafted as a Conscientious Objector to war. But is finding part of him enjoys the thrill of killing.
Kias:
Hears the voices no one else can hear. Whether they are encouraging or comforting depends on the moods of those around him.
Egos:
Secretly suicidal. Entire family died just days before deployment.
summeryclept:
Sacrificed another soldier to save his own hide. Never really liked that guy anyway.
So, now we move on, so the person two below you on the list writes the third entry. This means that Egos will be writing the third part of illgottengains's, summeryclept will be writing the third part of Kias's, etc.
Once this is done, we can pick our soldiers! I am enjoying where these guys are going, so far. Remember, don't play to what you think someone's expectations will be - write down and expand in a way that you find interesting or challenging!

The voices say he's got a secret mission to find... It.
Sacrificed another soldier to save his own hide. Never really liked that guy anyway.
Yet ever night since that day, restful sleep becomes ever more elusive
El Dorado: Never forget and The Defense of Minas Tirith, Capital of India
If anyone finds out, he'll get a section 8 and be sent home. That isn't part of the plan.
Just as a reminder - if there's any aspect of your completed Burden that you don't like so much, just say so in the thread and state your suggested change. If we all think it's a better development, then it'll be solidified. You have to do this before we pick Grunts, though, so decisions have a time limit.
That said, if you want to start saying what soldier you think you want to play as, post your likings in the thread. They won't be solidified until after the Burdens have been finalised, but it'll give people some reference in their own decisions.
He finds himself longing for darker and darker thrills. This is perhaps his way of coping with the horror and surviving .
Now that we have all the Burdens, let's start picking our soldiers!
for myself: I like the idea of the guy in charge being a fucking coward and willing to let others die in order to stay alive.
-or, Deadwood fits the bill,
-maybe Saint, or Anaconda, all in that order.
illgottengains
-Temple, for the college aspect
-Professor. He seems like such a fucking villain to me, I don't know
kias
-Sargeant would be awesome, sending us on all kinds of crazy-ass tasks to get whatever in the world. Seems a bit cliche though, but eh
-Chameleon! Who knows what that fucker is up to. Can't decide who I like more for this one.
egos
-Deadwood is an obvious choice
-Coyote would be out of left field but an interesting twist!
"I ain't gonna die in this damn swamp, no sir, not me. Once I find it, life will be nothing but smooth sailing. What? Of course I planned this out... no, I was not talking to you... nevermind, let's move out."
El Dorado: Never forget and The Defense of Minas Tirith, Capital of India
Yeah, I seriously considered this also, but he seems like such a straight shooter in his bio... but then again, that could be awesome to really. Completely cool, calm collected, professional, and guided by voices telling him to find it.
And I won't brook no shit in finding it, the war depends on it! Hmm, tough call...

Soldier time, then! Then we choose dice, and then? We get our war on.
ok keep the first one . as I see you did
I personally like Anaconda the most. But that may be because he is rather blank slate, and a suicidal guy in charge seems lethal.
If I had to go gut instincts on what seems appropriate for others (I could see a fair amount working though)
Kias: My mind immediately went to Saint, Chameleon, or Cowboy for some reason. Ram would be interesting though...
summeryclept: For some reason I would think "Big White" or the "Professor", but this may be due to movies I've seen where similar things occur. Actually I could see Deadwood because of the harshness of war bit.
I don't really want to be the geeky college kid, I picture him more as an ex-hippie disillusioned now who using drugs as a means to cope with his fate and his struggle with his own humanity.
"Fuck, Man! Did you see that? His fucking arm is halfway across that river! I'll never be able to wash that image away.."
I am glad you like the creation system! It is very different than most systems, but it helps set a tone of where the group wants characters to develop and explore into. The characters we have in this game are evidently very internally-conflicted, though there are a lot of opportunities to push them into external ones.
Once the rest of you cement your soldier choice, we'll do the dice process - which'll be highly simplified, since we have four people.
El Dorado: Never forget and The Defense of Minas Tirith, Capital of India
Now, the dice selection! Going by order of months in, the list now looks like this:
Saint (illgottengains): 6
Anaconda (Egos): 8
Locker (Kias): 9
Ram (summeryclept): 10
So we now have dick picking, which will work like this - since the lowest number of months is 6, illgottengains goes first, and there'll be a total of six rounds. The dice for grabs in each round look like this:
Round 1: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 2: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 3: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 4: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 5: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 6: d6, d8, d10, d12
So, what happens is this: illgottengains will choose one dice from each round to go in his pool, marking it with lime. That's his starting dice pool. Egos will then pick one dice from each round out of what remains, then gets to choose two dice of any size he wants. Kias will go next, picking from the rounds and then taking three dice of his choice, and summeryclept? He gets the remaining dice, and four of his own choice.
Oh, and when that's done, I pick dice - I get dice equal to twice the number of players, in any sizes that I want. Then we add one of each size to the out of play pool, and that's the dice economy! There will be no more dice in the game than what we start with.
illgottengains, let's get these dice all up ins.
Oh, and I've updated the OP with your soldier decisions and Burdens, for ease of reference.
When we pick dice of any size we want, we're grabbing those out of thin air, right? Naming dice that aren't even in the list there, whatever we'd like?
The dice have to be the same as the ones in the pools, so either d6, d8, d10 or d12. But yeah, they're coming out of thin air, so grab as many in whatever size (out of those four) that you want, when you have free pickin'.
So it's a balancing act! Taking big dice will give you an early punch, but it also means you'll be giving that dice to someone else straight away, who could use it against you.
EDIT: The other thing to remember, of course, is that nobody's dice pool stays stagnant, since as soon as you use a dice, you have to give it to someone else. And having big dice in your pools means that you're going to lose big dice when the GM runs out and takes one from each person.
Round 2: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 3: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 4: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 5: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 6: d6, d8, d10, d12
Egos is up next! Remember, after you choose your six round dice, you get to grab an extra two dice of your choice, from the sizes listed.
To quote again:
a d6 and a d10 for my extras
Round 2: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 3: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 4: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 5: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 6: d6, d8, d10, d12
Next up, Kias! You get to choose an extra three dice, once you have taken your Round dice.
2x d8, 1x d12 for extra dice
El Dorado: Never forget and The Defense of Minas Tirith, Capital of India
Round 2: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 3: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 4: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 5: d6, d8, d10, d12
Round 6: d6, d8, d10, d12
Pretty obvious what round dice summeryclept will be taking! But he still gets to pick his four extra dice, so once he does that, I'll post my dice choices and then do our first in-character post.
- 1d12
- 1d10
- and 2d8.
You are getting a d10 and that is final.
My dice choices/first narration incomin' later this morning!
but maybe you can give me that as an early xmas present
The squad were dropped by chopper to this place, this hell hole, only a scant few hours ago; already, they've been building foxholes, putting up makeshift beds, setting themselves up for the night. They're bareback, and sweaty, trading stories for cigarettes and vice versa.
Two of the fireteams are still in the camp, Alpha and Charlie - Bravo team, they're on border patrol, making sure that the jungle is scoped out for good expansion positions, places where they can start setting up some traps or bunkers. Places where the men can start to feel a little bit safer about being sent into the heart of this stinking, oppressive nowhere. Places where they won't feel like they're going to die that night.
But Raven, he's smarter than some of the other men would take him for. He knows that if his men do scout patrol, they won't be called on for ambush duty tonight.
Ambush duty. One of those jobs where it's almost guaranteed that someone's going to get their shit fucked up. Sitting up all night, trying to hide from the gook soldiers that might be coming through, but trying to spot them at the same time. Call a shot on them before they can sneak up on you and jam a bamboo spear into your throat, hang you up to bleed out.
"Long pig", someone said back, in Saigon - the gooks, they call us Joes "long pig".
Anaconda, Saint, Locker, they're mingling with the other men, setting up camp and talking. Taking it easy, knowing that they're going to have jobs to do tonight - if not ambush, then nightwatch for the camp itself. Easier, sure, but more men at risk if your preparedness drops.
Sergeant Capello - Ram, to the men - he knows that either Alpha or Charlie team needs to take on ambush duty for tonight. Turn them into dead men walking for one night, see who came back in the morning without any of their own blood on their hands. If they still had any hands left.
Now he's just gotta pick which one.
There's no conflict directly here, yet, so you're mostly free to mingle and roleplay. But Sergeant, you still have to make that call over which team ends up going out on ambush tonight, and that might mean a conflict.
Let's goooooooo
Saint flicks a cigarette butt off into a pool of water. His camp set up he mumbles something about taking a piss. The mud gives a bit as he stomps off a bit through the jungle. After traveling a short distance he stops and listens for anyone trailing him. Then draws a short thin metal tube with rubber wrapped around one end from one pocket and a little tin from the other. He glances side to side then pops the tin, takes a little black block opium, stuff a bit into one end of the pipe, closes and pockets the tin, draws a lighter from the same pocket, fires up.
"Ahhhhh....."
Almost immediately his eyes take a certain glaze. His arms and legs feel a bit lighter. The jungle seems a little less menacing now. The ever present threat of death a little easier to bear.
"I should get back... Well.. One more won't hurt.. I could die any second out here.. may as well be high."
Saint repeats his little ritual, takes a piss, then heads back toward camp.
