connection problems

it seems that some's connections of late have been rather... spotty shall we say. It's kind of weird too. Like I can't be on, but my brother, using the same internet connection whose computer is not 3' away from mine can connect, and quickly at that. Or I can be on fine, but Orthanc down in the NZ can't.
