Actually, I think that Carrie did a similar genre jump to Alien/Aliens, in the same film. I mean, it was obviously a horror movie, but it started out as a period drama.

I think what helps ripley as a character in aliens is that she's not military. Writers tend to think of everyone in the military who's not a main character as either a gruff hard ass or a sarcastic dumbshit (So you're either Drake or Hudson) they use women the same way.
I've never served, maybe there are a lot of vasquez's, I'd figure there are probably more ripleys though.
