Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
So, gents...as fate would have it, I have gone against all that I previously stood for. I bought a Wii the night before last. I basically bought it solely for the exclusives, as Xbox 360 will easily remain my "primary" console for cross-platform releases.
My question to you is this: might you be able to recommend to me some Wii-exclusive titles that are worth my time/money? I picked up four games when I bought the thing...those being New SMB, Punch Out!!, Zelda:TP, and Metroid Prime Trilogy. Beyond these, I'm clueless as to what a "real" gamer might go after on the Wii. I'm sure there are plenty of games I'll enjoy, but I'm not sure what they are.
The only requisite I have is that I am not interested in the mass-produced drivel that's being sold to soccer moms for their 8 year-old kids. I'm 26 and I've been gaming most of my life, which should give you all you need to know when considering what kinds of games I might be interested in (read: I trust your judgment, PA dudes). Take it from there, and thanks in advance.
Sounds like what you picked up will last a while, but here are a few of my faves:
A thousand times Super Mario Galaxy.
Trauma Center: Under the Knife. There's also a sequel.
Super Paper Mario. Especially if you liked Wonder Boy in Monster World. Not necessarily if you liked other Paper Mario games.
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Punch-Out is kind of a regret for me. There's nothing wrong with it per se, but it didn't grab me. You might like it if you have the reflexes for it. If mine was magically somehow still unopened, I would return it.
Ys I and II on the Virtual Console if you like old RPGs
Lords of Thunder, Virtual Console if you like shmups and fun. In fact almost every Turbo Grafx shooter on the VC is awesome. You might like Air Zonk more, actually, which is also awesome.
Bit.Trip.Beat on WiiWare. There's a demo for this, so I assume you're familiar with it.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.
Oh Christ, since making this thread, I've had more time to look over the Virutal Console, and my God. I could easily spend a paycheck or two just on that goddamn thing. All that aside, some pretty solid recommendations coming from you guys. Definitely wanted to check out Mario Kart, and Paper Mario comes highly recommended by a close friend, as well. Also loved Trauma Center on the DS (despite the fact that it got holyfuckdifficult at one point D: ) so I could definitely see myself checking that one out on the Wii. Thanks a million, dudes.
Edit: @Saddler; I really am digging Punch Out!!, mostly because of the nostalgia factor. Having to learn how to kick these guys' asses all over again is a blast. I get why you might not be able to get into it, though. But for me, it's a very nice blast from the past. I love the way they updated it for the Wii controls.
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories just came out recently and is quite good. If you're looking to save money then obviously get older games first, but if you want to be current then it's a good pick as far as I'm concerned.
As usual with a Nintendo console, you can hardly go wrong with any of the first-party AAA titles, I assume you know enough to know what those are. The appeal should be pretty universal (though I want to strangle whoever is responsible for the SMG water controls), and getting through those will take a good while.
As a side note: If you've never played RE4 (haha), the Wii edition is totally the way to go.
No More Heroes, it should be emphasized, is kind of a 'B' game - definitely a lot of fun and worth buying, but not an unforgettable experience by any stretch of the imagination.
Virtual Console is to taste of course (hoo boy do I regret buying the first two sonic games, which are apparently games that lots of people like), but I would like to give a shout out for Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 for NES. Tough as nails, but once you start to get it you will feel like goddamn ninja and have loads of fun. (NG 3 inexplicably has limited continues, and is also much shittier than 2 as far as I can tell, so my stance on it is don't bother.) The music is fantastic (probably 75% of why I kept coming back to get killed by hawks) and the cutscenes are mind-blowing for an NES game.
But hey, you've been gaming longer than me so you've probably already played those.
I've definitely played the old Ninja Gaiden ones, no reason for me to go that way again. Same with the old Sonic titles--which I loved to death--I've bought those about a hundred times over with all the "collection" games that have been released, and also on XBLA...to say nothing of having owned them originally on the Genesis back when they were new.
Also, concerning RE4: I still have my original GameCube limited edition exclusive from GameStop.
As for No More Heroes, I might sign it out from work just to give it a shot. That way if I don't dig it, I can just bring it back without having spent any money.
1) Buy four Wiimotes.
2) Buy four Gamecube controllers.
3) Buy Bomberman Blast.
4) Buy seven friends.
5) Blow some shit up.
Okay, so I guess Bomberman isn't a real "hardcore" game, but fuck me if I don't believe that all consoles should have some form of Bomberman on it, and the Wii version one-ups others (save Saturn Bomberman) with eight player local play. That shit is the business.
Also, no one mentioned MadWorld yet. So yes, get that fucking game. It is awesome.

Yeah I don't have anything against sonic in its distilled form, per se, except the limited continues coupled with the games being long and probably more difficult than Ninja Gaiden make me want to throw the classic controller through the wall.
By the way, Smash Bros. is really great to play with a friend. The coop adventure mode can be infuriating on occasion, but it's definitely worth doing, and the fighting game actually has a lot of depth in a duel context (with more players it's just too hectic). There are also a raft of 2-player coop challenges. Enormous value.
Definitely check out the WiiWare stuff. Someone else mentioned Bit.Trip Beat, which is excellent. There are also two other games in the series which are pretty damn good too: Bit.Trip Core and Bit.Trip Void.
There are supposed to be 3 more games coming out in the Bit.Trip series.
Interesting...I've given Okami some thought, because it looked like a game I'd really get into back when it came out. I just never gave it a shot because I always thought the way it played would've worked so much better on a Wii (i.e. motion controls) than on a PS2.
I think that the internet has been for years on the path to creating what is essentially an electronic Necronomicon: A collection of blasphemous unrealities so perverse that to even glimpse at its contents, if but for a moment, is to irrevocably forfeit a portion of your sanity.

Also World of Goo's worth is. I think the only other WiiWare game I've gotten is Pokemon Rumble, but only because I'm a 22 year old with the heart of a 5 year old
Also I think My Life as King and My Life as Warlord or something or another got good reviews, but you need to buy more DLC to get the full effect. Mega Man 9 as well.

Nah, PS2 version is fantastic, you won't really think that while playing it. The brush is not just a progressive idea shoehorned onto a thumbstick; it actually works fine. That said, it is fairly sluggish trying to to anything elaborate with it or using it a lot, so using things like bombs in combat is not something that would occur to you as much as in the Wii version.

Also now on the Wii:
Super Mario Cart.
The virtual console is the best part imo.
It is a fantastic service.
Just buy $20 worth of points and buy four NES games.
Zelda, Mario, Kirby, and some Mega Man 2 and you will be set.

*edit - and it's been out for 3 years so it'll cost less than a brand-new game.
RE:4 on the Wii is fantastic, it's the definitive version for sure.
Boom Blox is awesome if you play with friends. Get the newer game (Blast Party I think?), it's much less buggy and it's nearly as cheap.
There are supposed to be 3 more games coming out in the Bit.Trip series.
Also, if you like shmups, Castle Shikigami 3 is $10(or less) everywhere that has it.
Welcome to the world on this side.

Boom Blox is actually quite clever and fun. I was surprised and impressed with it.
