Dear Ma and Pa,

Things have been kinda slow around the base lately. We've all enjoyed the peace and quiet, but to be honest some of us are really anxious to see some action.

I had a horrible nightmare last night. I dreamt that the entire active duty squad went out on a mission and were completely wiped out. I woke up covered in sweat, almost screaming, but then I realized it was all just a bad dream.

We've been training less and less on marksmanship lately. I'm kind of worried. I don't want to go out on my first mission and not be able to hit anything. I'm sure we'll all be fine. I mean, we're the best of the best down here.

I got paid today. It's a bit less than what the recruiter told me I was going to be making, but I think maybe there was just a mistake made, and they'll fix it right up on the next one. It's not a huge deal, there isn't really much that we can spend our money on down here anyway, but I'm gonna forward some of it to you guys, please do me a favor and get Emily something nice. I sure do miss her something fierce down here.

Looks like I gotta go. We're about to head to chow. Hope it's not too cold up there.

Dear Ma and Pa,

I fear this may be the last message I am ever able to send to you.

It's hard to write this letter. We are on emergency power and the lights are getting dimmer by the hour. Life support is failing. There isn't enough power left to run the heating system to keep the temperatures up. The ice cold of the ocean deep presses in on us. My hands are numb. I cannot feel my feet. We huddle together for warmth but we are just prolonging the inevitable.

Several days ago our base commander disappeared. We have no idea where he has gone. Afterwards our rations storehouse and fuel cells were destroyed in small scale explosions, due to sabotage. We all cast nervous glances at each other, wondering who the traitor is. Whoever it is, he must be being mind controlled by the enemy. No one would consign themselves to a death as horrific as this on purpose.

The exterior perimeter lights have gone out. I see strange shapes playing at the windows. I don't know if they are hallucinations caused by dehydration or if it's them, watching us, waiting for us to die so they can cut their way in and loot our corpses. Steal our technology, dissect us and study us and see what makes us tick so they can design weapons that will help them kill us faster.

I should have never have signed up. I am so sorry. I thought that I would come here and make a difference. I was so full of excitement and idiot bravado. I don't know what I was thinking. I wish I could go back in time, to see myself, that young kid too stupid to know better. To stand in his way, to yell and scream and punch and kick and claw and do anything to stop him from signing the papers, boarding the sub, coming down to this god forsaken place.

The environmentalists are wrong. They haven't been down here. They don't know. They haven't seen. Fuck the whales. Fuck the algae. Fuck whatever cute turtle they're slapping onto their latest propaganda piece. We need to nuke the ocean floor. We need to poison everything. We need to turn the sea into a toxic soup that runs green with their blood until they are nothing more than a memory. We never should have come down here. People don't belong down here.

I'm going to scan this letter and encode it on a low level burst transmission on the civilian band. We've used the same signal to call for help (our comms was the first system to go out), but the latency is so high that I doubt it will reach topside command in time.

I have to go now. I need to send this message before I lose too much strength. It's getting hard to breathe. I love you all very much. Papa was right. I never should have came down here I never should I
