That's awesome, @ruzkin‌. I myself am just now realizing I have to go back and add a bunch of stuff I've bought.

    I have no discipline.

Thanks guys. The temptation is pretty strong to start new games - friends have gifted me lots of stuff on Steam that I'm yet to begin (because it's not on the backlog until you press play that first time, I figure). I'll do my best to hold the line.

    OK

    For reals this year.

I'm working down the backlog; in fact, I'm not buying another game* until it's cleared.

    *
Except maybe the few Final Fantasy games I don't own, as I have this powerful urge to play them all back to back with my kids.

I made a list of 15 short games that I'd like to beat. Plus Tales of Eternia since I'm so close to the end. With short games, I might actually feel like I'm making progress. I did beat 20 games in 2014 though, that's a new record for me.

    !Update !Beaten +2 FallOffTheWagon +15

Beat Bleed, Liberation Maiden, and Assassin's Creed: Revelations. Bleed was fun, though I only beat it on easy I still beat it. I suck at it, but I still think it was fun. Picked up Suikoden 2. Suikoden was the second game series, the first being Shining Force, where I played the first game but never picked up the second game that was considered the better of the two.

That part was written before the holidays. Between the steam sale and getting a vita I've added 14 games to my backlog. The games added were Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, Freedom Wars, Wild Arms, Fate/EXTRA, Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time, Persona 4 Golden, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1, Space Hulk, The Banner Saga, Mercenary Kings, Burnout Paradise, Hero Siege, Eschalon: Book 2, and Final Fantasy VIII. That's a lot more than I had planned to get, so I'm going to wait until I get at least halfway through my backlog before picking up any more games. I have to say though, starting P4G for the first time is a pretty good way of starting the new year.

Not really sure were to put this:

I'm playing Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, i.e. that game where you control two kids with two thumbsticks. You know, this one.

    i-cdXChHp-1050x10000.jpg

So I'm really digging the quiet charm of the game; the bit wit the mushroom giant was pretty neat. But those controls, gah. I'm at the part right after the mushroom giant, where you have to swim in a lake in a cave and have to use big brother to keep little brother from drowning... and I just can't do it. I tried the damn thing for 15 minutes and just can't get him more than halfway.

Is there a real, pressing, awesome reason I should keep going, or should I be happy with what charm I got and go onto something else in my backlog?

Without getting into details, you have barely scratched the true charm/depth of that game. It's got some of the best eye candy of last generation, and you haven't reached it yet.

e: I think it's just a matter of holding the younger brother's trigger while moving the other joystick - it's just holding so he holds on or something.

    !Update !Beaten +3

Beat Persona 4 Golden. Damn that is a good game, spent 130 hours playing it across January and the first week of February. Started up Persona Q afterwards but it wasn't grabbing me. I think that playing it right after beating P4G was a mistake. I'll put it down for a bit and pick it back up when I feel like seeing those characters again. Also beat Suikoden. I loaded up an old save that was right after helping the dragon knights. Only had about ten stars left to recruit and then went on to end it. The last boss was easier than I thought it would be, but I think I got lucky with which attacks were used. Third game beat was Torchlight. I liked it for the first few hours, but by the end of the game I was bored of it. I just wish there had been a bit more to the story. Only three games in two months. I need to see if I can pick up the pace a little.

So, knocked two more off the backlog:

    - The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. This was a really strange and beautiful little game. Just... play it. It's cool.
    - Valiant Hearts. Yup, WWI still worst most terrible war.

So, right after I got past the lake on Brothers, my save file broke. Fuuuuuuuu

Been on kind of a Double Fine jag lately. Iron Brigade was a lot more fun than I was expecting, Stacking less so. And Costume Quest was great. Is Costume Quest 2 worth picking up?

And Haunt. Not technically Double Fine but Tim Schaefer voices the main guy wonderfully. Unfortunately, the game is a chore to play and I'm stuck in the section with the amusement park ride. Based on how little info there is about the game on the net I can only assume NO ONE played it.

I forgot to add it to my backloggery, but I bought and beat Axiom Verge. It was pretty cool! There's still stuff I haven't found, but I feel "done" with it at this point. If you're looking for a neat Metroidvania that enjoys messing with your familiarity with the standard upgrade formula for these games, give it a whirl.

Picked up Dark Souls for PS3 as well. Not sure if it's my bag, though; I want to like it, but it looks really, really ugly for a PS3 era game, and it was giving me a headache yesterday just trying to see the shapes in the blurryness and darkness. Seriously, crisp edges on models and texture work designed around separating background from important things (monsters, items, etc) is always appreciated.

    !Update !Beaten+4 !FallOffTheWagon+24 80/169/3

Okay, it's definitely been a while since I updated, because I've beaten a game that I bought *after* my last update. To the list!
Progress first: I beat Spelunky the regular way twice now. Really clever take on sidescrolling platformer meets YASD roguelike dungeon delving. Lots of profanity, but lots of hilarity. I remember my first encounter with the tiki projecting spikes into my body, then the physics engine allowing me to tumble through an exploding frog, to have my lifeless carcass collide with a man-eating plant. Fitting and thorough. Thanks Spelunky :D

I ended up beating X-COM Enemy Within after buying it for my phone. It's *almost* as good as the PC counterpart.

Now for the skydive off the wagon while hitting twenty-four (24) game-sized hunks of bird carcass on the way down:

I kickstarted Planetary Annihilation, and that finally came out
Bought Mass Effect out of guilt for never paying for a copy of it before.
    Lara Croft: Guardian of Light
    Skulls of the Shogun
    Gunpoint
    Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
The Wolf Among Us (played and beaten, what an incredible story *and* collection of characters)
    Valkyria Chronicles
The Jackbox Party Pack (beaten; you're a winner just for buying this and playing it)
Bad Rats: the Rats Revenge (gifted by someone)
Crawl (looking forward to this getting out of greenlight; the boss fights are the most incredible part of this game)
Transistor (gifted by a pretty lady)
Pillars of Eternity rolled off the kickstarter assembly line. I wish I didn't have such a goddamn addiction to Iron Man mode)
Alien: Isolation had a discount recently
Ghostbusters: the Videogame was on sale for dirt cheap recently
Sunrider: Mask of Arcadius (gifted from someone, I think)
Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China (hot damn if this isn't a nice take on the Creed universe. A sidescrolling 2.5D red-headed stepchild of Creed and Mark of the Ninja. Very cool art style, believable female protagonist so far. Definitely worth $10
Prototype 1 and 2 were on sale. Nom nom.
X-Wing, TIE-Fighter, X-Wing vs TIE-Fighter AND X-Wing Alliance arrived on Steam.....I got really excited when I saw that.

I think there is a drug in the Fallout universe, and it is known as fully modded Fallout: New Vegas. I am addicted to its effects (+5 Intellect, +5 Perception), but the withdrawal symptoms are pretty lethal (-3 Endurance, -2 Strength).

Thanks to picking up the Capcom Essentials collection on the cheap (it's a collection of several other Capcom games in an attempt to get rid of all those copies of Resident Evil 6 that didn't sell) I've got Dead Rising 2. The first one didn't really grab me, because the "you've got to die over and over and over before you have the strength to actually accomplish anything" annoyed the piss out of me. Is Dead Rising 2 any better in that regard? Or is there anything I can do to enjoy the first one better? I still have it.

Well, I think I'm bailing on my 52 Games challenge. I simply don't have the drive and free time to finish up some of the games in a timely fashion. I'll probably just convert it to a generic Backlog page instead by the end of the month.

I think they only way a 52 game challenge could work is either if you're playing only NES/GB games or have no job/school for quite some time.

Just finished Puzzle Agent on steam a bit ago. Basically, it's "Professor Layton goes to Twin Peaks".

Not very hard, but charming. Story doesn't resolve, I'd guess you have to buy the second one, but I can wait for a sale, as the first only took me two hours.

I'd defnitely recommend Old Blood. I think I beat it (just main story, no optional stuff) in like 6 hours or so and had a blast. Sadly, I ended up reinstalling Rage because of it but eh...it's a fun game that you can beat in a couple of afternoons.

Pokémon X has been vanquished. Out of stubbornness, I didn't even have a mega-evolution capable monster in my party in my Elite 4 + Champ trounce.
For you Poké-ficcionados: Gyarados, Dragalge, Marowak, Bisharp, Scizzor, Chandelure. Honorable mention goes to Hawlucha and Bibarel as the HM Slaves

Infinite-use TMs was such a damn fine idea.

Oh, and I beat Walking Dead Season 2 last year...and never marked it appropriately >_>

Months ago, I got Smash for Wii-U and Smash for 3DS, and then Splatoon last month.

Then I bought The Witcher 1 and 2, Gauntlet, Windward, Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved, Jet Set Radio, Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, Samurai Gunn, Strike Suit Zero, The Stanley Parable, and Wasteland 2. Thanks Steam Summer Sale!

Old CIV games, The Dark Eye and Memoria go into the give-up bin.

    Update - 03-07-15

    We're almost there, folks.

I succumbed to great deals over Christmas and bought a PS4 with GTAV bundled in, but beat that just recently. A friend gifted me Shadow of Mordor and I'm about 50% through. PS+ is swarming with free indies, and I've bookmarked some but resisted diving in until I finish off the list.

Oh, and I sold my 360, so that's Mark of the Ninja gone. Just Mordor and Shadowrun Returns left to finish!

I picked up a Wii U with Wind Waker and bought Earthbound. I then proceeded to play Chocobo's Dungeon (the Wii game) for 22 hours. Once I beat it, I'll go back to Trails in the Sky, where I'm getting very close to the end.

EDIT: I have now beat Trails in the Sky! I had trouble with the final form of the last boss but on the second try, I kept using Earth Wall and won quite easily.

The last post was in July 2016? Geez, no wonder it took me a while to find this thread.

My backlog's to the point that I'm much more willing to abandon a game if it's not being actively good in my eyes.

Strider: Controls like a dream but most of the time I'm fighting maybe four different types of enemies in the same sprawling green/gray background in between fights with bosses that take 47 squintillion hits before dying.
Thief 4: I could probably wring fun out of sneaking and swiping if it weren't for the fact that I immediately hated the main character and everyone else in the generically cheerless world.
Swapper: I know people rave about this but man, this world is empty and samey, and the writing is pretty pretentious.
Doki Doki Universe: I truly dig the art style and writing, but pretty much all I'm doing is running back and forth between people who want something and then spamming whichever greeting motion they like.

My goal's to eliminate everything dating before 2015 as soon as I can, because there's already too much good stuff that hit last holiday season and this spring.

This last page goes from 2014 to 2017. That's quite a feat. :)

I've finished 71 games & moved 64 more to the abandon pile so far this year, and been able to unhook and box up several older consoles as a side benefit. My immediate goal is to eliminate everything more than a decade old, and I still have 25 games in that category, mostly PC with one PSP game. Then I'll only have 115 games from 2007 to present and I'll be completely caught up!

    ...

...I really need to stop buying games because they're on sale.

My backlog is less impressive then some, but I have maybe 2 dozen games to get through. Most of those are from playstation + free games though so I don't feel especially concerned about them. In terms of games I paid money directly for it is maybe 5 or 6.

I have 198 games that range from ones I really want to play (Bravely Default, Dragon Quest 8, Tactics Ogre) to games I'm not sure I care enough to even start like Final Fantasy 2. I love rpgs but most of them take me a long time to beat and I have 8 Zelda games I've barely played (I have played some Breath of the Wild and Minish Cap and want to play more). I think I'm getting close to the end of Lunar: Silver Star Harmony though. My problem is that I have so many games I want to play that I get choice paralysis and just keep playing Picross DS. So much Picross DS. I've only played and beat 4 games this year and 3 of them were picross games.

My Nintendo Picross - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
    Dragon Quest VII
    Picross e5
    Picross e6

And I'm almost finished with Picross e7 too.

At this point my backlog is a couple dozen games, but there's some big time sinks in there like the Personas and the last Metal Gear.

...well, my console backlog. I don't even wanna think about my Steam console and what Humble Bundle has done to it.

Well, last year (2017), I only beat 10 games and bought 52.

This year (2018), I bought 3 games, Mario Kart 7, Picross e8 and The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. And I beat 2 games (Mario Kart 7 and Picross e8).

I managed to keep myself from buying Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker, but now I'm tempted to buy Etrian Odyssey V, since it's 50% off on the eshop and I loved Etrian Odyssey IV. I want to buy it at some point but I have many, many rpgs already, and I'm currently playing Dragon Quest VIII right now, and maybe it's go on sale again in the future.

How to keep from buying games I won't start right away?

When you figure it out, let me know.

I should switch over to Backloggery, but right now, I've just been using a spreadsheet to keep track of all the games I have in my backlog. I'll look into moving it to Google Sheets so that y'all can see my insanity.

Currently, I have 127 games in my backlog (69 for PS4, 6 for Switch, 11 for Wii/WiiU, 8 for Vita, 16 for 3DS, and 17 for PS3). Next to each game is an approximate length in hours that it'll take me to play/beat it. Assuming I average about 10 hours of gaming time a week (no idea how accurate that is), I have enough games to last me until April 5, 2021.

I also use the spreadsheet to keep track of what my top 10 games of the year are (I'm always playing games late so my 2017 GOTY list was Horizon and then a bunch of games from 2016 or earlier), how much I've spent on games (averaging 59% off MSRP), and long it takes me to beat a game after buying it (biggest gap is 2096 days between buying a game called Rochard for the PS3 and actually playing/beating it, though if I ever get around to playing Fallout 3, that will certainly win, seeing as how I bought it in early 2010).

Backloggery takes some time to set up but as long as you keep it updated regularly it works pretty well. I also use an app called my game collection on my phone to track my total collection. I only add games to my backlog that I intend to play so there is not an absolute overlap between the two.
