I actually played that before I played Trigger, but I'm pretty fond of it. I can dig the sort of disjointed, almost episodic pacing the game had, although I can see how it could quickly grate on others.
It's probably why I also like Legend of Mana.
I liked it a great deal too, but never got the hang of the magic system (I only ever trapped one spell) and hated how character progression worked.
Trapping wasn't ever necessary, and I liked the magic system because you could hit someone a few times and cast a spell all in the same turn, but then you'd be in the negative next turn.
Also character progression worked exactly like every other RPG, it's just that the XP and levels went on behind-the-scenes, but it was still just kill stuff -> get more powerful.
It penalized you for not using characters by tying stat bonuses to battles fought and then constantly put you in situations where you couldn't use the characters you wanted. The second strongest character in the game was that pink dog thing simply because you could use it in more battles than anyone beside the main character.
Do you have an example or is this just more of a gut instinct
I would have to know the year that FF7 came out to say definitively, but considering that RPG's and Adventure games have been on PC since... the beginning of PCs, surly it is true.
PC does pretty much everything before console. I think about shooters. Wolf 3d in 92? Turok didnt come out till 97 and duke 3d till 96. Doom went to console after PC.
You...understand I'm talking about a narrative trope and not gaming conventions, right? But Final Fantasy VII came out in Japan January '97, about ten months before the first Fallout and a year and a half before Baldur's Gate.
Gaming conventions? huh?
Yeah I know you are talking about the narrative tool as applied to video games. I'm not an idiot. :P
Lemme think of some RPG games that had unreliable narrators before 97. That was a long time ago, it is hard to remember.

but they're listening to every word I say
What's fucked up is that the news crew probably found a patch of ice where people were falling, and instead of warning people, they let that person crack their head just to get a good shot.
For Comedy doc, just like when king 5 turned their camera on cars playing bumper cars last year.
I was under the impression that someone recorded it themselves and sent it in to the news. You can hear people yelling at the cars, too.

I never played Legend of Mana.
To be honest I don't think I ever beat Secret even though I loved it a lot.
But yeah, to me Chrono Cross was an amazing sequel-yet-not-a-sequel. I love how it tied it in to the first just barely enough at a few parts so that when it happened you were like "Yessssssssssss" but it wasn't blatant throughout.
I also loved playing Suikoden 1&2 back to back. They are fantastic on their own, but there's another example of a sequel that isn't super direct about it.
If you ever see Legend of Mana on the cheap I would completely recommend it to you. It's got some annoying conventions and puzzles, but on the whole the game is charming, the music is good, the plot has three little arcs that vaguely relate to each other (the ending is sort of out of the blue but doesn't ruin the rest of the game), and the art style is beautiful as all hell.
And if you don't like it you can always put it up on Ebay for like $50.

This does not make any sense unless you were trying to min/max your way through the game.
You did not need to pay attention to any of that. You just needed to play and if you found stuff hard kill a few more guys or something.
Mostly Pakistani Will, not so much Indian. At least in my experiance.
Yeah it struck me as kind of odd because in the US we make basically no distinction between the two. I guess the Indians for whatever reason are a lot more anglophilic though.
Earlier intergration and far less poor. They're almost on a level with whites in regards to education (the stereotype has always been corner shop owner or dentist/doctor). Plus a whole complicated relationship of being seen as the 'best' of our subjects, India being the jewel in the crown, long convulted colonial history etc etc.

This is depressing. I enjoy my enjoyment of a lot of things the world has to offer. I don't want to find the world around me warping out of my tastes and liking less and less contemporary stuff as I get older
I am concerned I am having some kind of early-onset midlife crisis.
Everybody in my workplace who is the same age as me is several levels below me in the corporate hierarchy and the only excuses my peers (being the people who work on the same floor and thus who I see every day) have for going drinking are that someone is either getting married or is pregnant.

Seriously.
I wasn't trying to min/max. I just got frustrated when I picked a party I really liked, fought with them for a while, then lost them and had to play with new people. When I got my party back again, they'd be significantly weaker than the people I was currently fighting with, which is something you can overlook but still feels like a penalty for preferring certain characters over others.

Okay, I could see this. But that has nothing to do with the xp/leveling system. RPGs pull this shit all the time where they force you to use certain people, or others leave/join your party.
That annoys me as well. The Suikoden games were especially bad about this. Final Fantasy Tactics has a notorious part involving this. But still, those annoyances aside, all the games mentioned are fantastic.
So yeah, I can't understand a complaint about the leveling system, but I can understand a complaint about it switching up your party and not letting you use the people you want. That is always annoying in RPGs, but unfortunately necessary for some plot reasons.
Fertility drugs apparently. I only work with about fifty people and eight of them have announced that they are pregnant or have partners who are pregnant in the last month.

Chrono Trigger felt pretty primitive to me, but I am sure it was a real thing back in its prime.

It was, and I can understand this entirely. If you played it for the first time now, it doesn't have very many unique things as far as RPGs go.
But at the time, man. Fucking time travel, alternate endings, side quests, and a fun ass plot all rolled into one.
The graphics for some of the spells were pretty nifty for SNES era as well.
Also the fucking music. Best videogame composer of all time.
So bad.
I thought this too
I feel so dirty now
