Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

And the Emmy goes to......

RidleySariaRidleySaria Registered User regular
The Sixaxis.

No, really.
The PlayStation 3's Sixaxis controller has been honoured with an award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

The Technology and Engineering Emmy Award comes as the console manufacturer also revealed it has shipped one million units of its PlayStation 3 to North American retailers.

"The overwhelming consumer demand and critical acclaim for PS3 is testament of the platform's strength and the industry's desire for a true next-generation entertainment system," commented Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

"The full potential of this powerful machine has yet to be realised. What you've seen so far is just a taste of what will be on the table for 2007 and years to come," he added.

The Sixaxis controller has added motion sensing technology to re-define the original Dual Shock controller, detecting natural, real-time movements, along with input via pressure sensitive buttons, analogue sticks and triggers.

Sony's PlayStation 3 has also picked up the CES Best of Innovations Award for 2007, PC World's 20 Most Innovative Products Award, Sound and Vision's Editor's Choice Award and a Digital Innovation Award from the Digital Entertainment Group.

I don't even know how to express myself on this one.

Dont worry, Nintendo dont know about this yet. Their HQ is completely blocked up with the huge piles of cash that has been trucked in. Its like a ball pit at some fairground, only instead of balls it is wads of cash, and instead of little children it is a hundred tiny japanese businessmen in suits.

And has it always been awarded to things that only have the most peripheral relation to television?

I find the notion of a television tuned to a dead channel very relevant to the Emmy awards.

...also, "Technology and Engineering" award? Since when do the Emmys have one of those?

There are a lot more Emmy awards than the ones they give to actors. It's just that everyone is more interested in Elisha Cuthbert's cleavage rather than the cleavage of the guy who edits Survivor so the techie awards don't get airtime.

Okay, so Sony gave the Emmys some money hats. They applied them to the wrong thing (they should've applied it to the PS3's blu-ray, or the convergence aspects, not the controller that's barely changed in 10 years), but that's easily overlooked.

the question becomes simple, then: Will they hand out this "special" award during the Emmy telecast? Part of me thinks no, because there's no way to spin this that doesn't look like they are shilling. But another part of me thinks yes, because that's what Sony wants.

Well yeah, but one would think that "Technology and Engineering" award would have something to do with television, wouldn't you?

I mean, the only thing the PS3 has to do with television is that it connects to one.

That leads to a pair of questions, then.

    1) Why weren't Nintendo at the CES?

    2) Why is this award, billing itself as an Emmy, being given out at CES? Shouldn't it be handed out a bit later in the year?

They're getting two awards. One is an Emmy. The other is an award for innovation from the CES going on in Vegas.

    1. Nintendo doesn't participate in CES. Just not their kind of thing. It's a general electronics show.

    2. The Emmy people do claim to be siding with science in their official name "National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences." so they just give out one of these every year kinda like "Oh..technology. You have a brand name. Here."

Nintendo USED to participate in CES, but they pulled out to concentrate on their now defunct-Spaceworld and E3, where they could get more (Positive) attention.

However, now that E3 is gone (for all intents and purposes) and Spaceworld is gone, too, perhaps Nintendo should think about going back to CES. I wouldn't be surprised....
