Gravitronix Booth Tournament! Up to $1,000 grand prize!

VThornheartVThornheart Registered User regular
So, after a lot of running around and my friend Jesse putting down the cash to get a booth, we're going to be showing off Gravitronix (and hopefully the start of our next game that we're working on, if we can get enough of it made for it to be presentable =) ) at PAX East!

Jesse wanted to make it something special too, so he's put together a tournament:

***

"To competitive gamers the world over,

While working on Gravitronix™ for WiiWare™, I was the primary playtester for the game and thus became quite good at it. So good, in fact, that I never found a player who could beat me at Gravitronix. I've decided that I'm going to find that player, and I'm going to make the search interesting.

Recently, we held a local Gravitronix tournament and it was an absolute blast. So we're going to be holding another tournament at our booth at this year's Penny-Arcade Expo East, happening in Boston, MA on March 26th-28th.

The winner of this tournament will go best 2 out of 3 rounds against me. Should they win, they will earn my blessing as the best Gravitronix player in the world, and $1,000 cold, hard cash.

Hope to see you there.

Sincerely,
Jesse Lowther
Lead Designer, Medaverse Studios

Medaverse Studios is pleased to announce the "Beat Us At Our Own Game" tournament, with a $1,000 grand prize!

Where: The Medaverse booth at the Penny-Arcade Expo East, Boston, MA.

When: March 26th-28th, signups for the tournament will begin March 26th when the show opens.

The Game: Gravitronix™ (available now on WiiWare™ for 500 Wii Points™). Best 2 of 3 rounds, 1v1, 180° territories, default settings.

Final Round: Winner of the tournament will play against lead designer Jesse Lowther for $1,000. Best 2 of 3 rounds, 180° territories, default settings. $1,000 for winning, $250 for losing.

Entry Fee: $5 per entry to finance 2nd, 3rd and 4th place prizes."

***

So there you have it! Come by and visit Jesse and the other Medaverse peoples and sign up for the tournament, and get to honing your Gravitronix skills! =)

    Thanks guys! =)

I just realized, I should probably add some links so that people who don't know can see a bit more about what Gravitronix is... though to get ready for the tournament, you'll definitely want to log some time with the game on WiiWare to hone your skills up!

What kind of game is Gravitronix? Picture Warlords in a circular arena with up to 8 players, and various types of projectiles that each have their own unique physics properties. The projectiles don't move as fast as they do in Warlords, but there's more of them (with more variation in what they do) and there's more things that you can do *to* them in order to use them to your advantage. Take a look at the video below (which also shows how to play!)

    A quick Gravitronix Tutorial!

One thing to recall as you're getting started: remember to twist the controller like you're turning a doorknob! That appears to be the most common reason for having unresponsive controls. If you swing or toss the controller instead of twisting it, it won't interpret that motion as intending to move. (allowing for multiple control schemes is something we've learned that we need to do for the next game if we use motion controls =) )

One more quick tip... when getting ready for the tournament, you'll find that it will be far more helpful to play with people than against the computer. The computer at some levels can be skilled, but it will never match the ingenuity of other human players. Gravitronix is, in general, considerably more fun with human opponents anyways. ;)

Start off with some 1v1v1v1 matches (which gives you a quarter-circle territory all to yourself), and once you're comfortable with that move on to 2v2 or 1v1 matches: the tournament itself will be 1v1 matches with half-circle zones, and to compensate for the extra area to cover your character will move considerably faster. It will take a bit of time to adjust to the speed, but you can get the hang of it with practice!

You guys should also run some live tutorials for people at your booth. Maybe in between tournament rounds, pull in some random onlookers and show them how to play in front of everybody else.

How we do it depends upon how many entrants we have for the tournament. We wouldn't mind if we held the tournament the first day and concluded it the first day, then had the remaining days to just hang out and show people the game.

It's awesome just watching people as they learn the game, but I also look forward to at least a few veteran players to make the tournament interesting. :)

Actually, Saturday would be the best day to run the tourney as it has the longest open exhibition hours. You could run the tutorials and tourney signups on Friday (utilizing the tutorials to entice people into signing up), then run the tourney on Saturday and have freeplay on Sunday.

    That's GREAT to know!

I was actually just discussing this with one of the team today because we weren't sure which day would be best for the tournament itself. We'll have signups all friday then start the tournament when the show opens saturday.

I have a question for everyone and this has been a point of contention for some....

    Would you rather we:

    A) Charge a $5 entry fee to finance 2nd, 3rd and 4th place prizes.

    or

    B) Charge no entry fee but only have the grand prize.

It's still early enough that we can do it either way (and so you know, we really can't afford to finance 2nd, 3rd and 4th ourselves at this point).

I think that B) is more within the "community", "all-inclusive" feel and spirit of PAX.

So this is why it never got a release in the UK, to neuter my (what would surely otherwise be) mad skillztm at this game, so I couldn't take all your money, then spend it all on Tea and top hats.

Count me in for some training/tournament action.

Me, too!! Apart from anything else, it is apparently both funny and frustrating watching me trying to play any game, so for pure entertainment value, I'll try to play!
And if there was a prize for being the worst ever (but most enthusiastic) gamer, I'd win hands down.

I dunno, LewieP's Mummy, you might be surprised. Playing Gravitronix, from what I understand, should be about as easy as turning a doorknob. Only this doorknob hurls and deflects projectiles.

Hmmm, maybe that could be an advertising slogan "GRAVITRONIX! HURL PROJECTILES AT YOUR FRIENDS WITH THE EASE OF TURNING A DOORKNOB!"

Ooo, I can turn door knobs - well, with one hand, as long as I'm not carrying anything, so there's hope yet, there may be another game I can master!

Mwa ha ha! =) Well, beating me is the easy part. Beating Jesse... significantly harder. =) But I'm hoping to see someone who can beat him, he pummels me fairly easily. =)

If he wins, he can face you first as kind of a "sub boss" before fighting me as the final boss.

We should've done a whole ladder thing where you had to beat the entire Medaverse dev team before finally facing me.

I'd wear the M.Bison hat and cloak and everything...

Careful! You'll piss off all 5 Balrog players out there! (he might actually be good in SF4, haven't checked).

We have some additional info about the tournament:

-We've decided to waive the entry fee but will have no prizes other than first place.

    -We're at booth 637 on aisle 600.

-Sign-ups for the tournament will start when the show opens on Friday.

-The tournament will begin when the show opens on Saturday and run until completion.

-We will be taking a finite number of entries so if you want to get into the tournament (actual number TBD), you had best come sign up as soon as the show opens.

-When you sign up, we will be taking down your cell phone number and we will contact you 10 minutes before it is your turn to play. If aren't at our booth, holding the Wii remote after those 10 minutes are up, you're disqualified and out of the tournament (sorry, but we need to keep the tournament moving forward or we might not finish it in time, which isn't fair to the other players).

-Same rules still apply: 180 degree territories, default settings, $1,000 for winning against me at the end, $250 for losing against me at the end.

    Hope to see you there!

I don't have a Wii to train on, so I'm going to practice turning doorknobs all week. :P

if theres anyone who hasn't stopped by to try this i'd recommend it. just had a quick bash but it seemed like games could get pretty heated once everyone knows what they're doing. now if only i actually had a Wii.
