Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
I've got a EAH4850 as part of my year-old custom built PC that melts when Minesweeper looks at it sideways.
I routinely get temps over 100C running games that it should handle with ease. I go into the chargen for STO, for example, at get the popup warning, for example. I know the card infamously runs hot, but I'm not in the mood to add aftermarket cooling or play around with my case (its a big black Antec with giant fans that should be more than sufficient for airflow.)
Can I get some recommendations on cards that offer similar performance in a similar price range (under $200). I'm perfectly happy with ATI otherwise, just want something that doesn't chronically overheat.
If there is a next-gen card worth hopping on at this point that might extend the life of my system (Core 2 Duo E8400) that'd be appreciated too.
Did you try updating the drivers, because some graphics cards under old drivers have the problem of running really hot.
Also check to make sure that nobody's overvolted your PCIE.

Ive been out of the video card market for awhile so I can't give you any recommendations. But in the meantime you can try using a program that will let you manually control the fan speed and set certain speeds for whatever temp you are running at. I know ATI Tray Tools lets you do it. I use it when im gaming and my PC sounds like a jet engine but at least I get no crashes and it keeps the rest of my case cooler.
I have a 4850 as well. Now I know that you said you don't want to add an aftermarket solution but they are incredibly easy to install and cost so little. My card was running hot (as they all do), put a Zantec fan on in and the little heatsinks for the RAM. It now idles at like 40 and under load goes to 55 max. It was running at 70/80
Sapphire Radeon 5770 $179.99 - $169.99 after $10 rebate
Its a GDDR5 card with 1GB RAM
I woudl recommend the Sapphire over the other makers because they have the best fans in them. Just thought if your old card is that hot, there might be a small circulation problem or too close to the CPU heatsink or something.
but I wouldn't bother. Its cheap but gathering from the specs it would be very similar to the 4850. It has an increase of 75MHz in speed but 80 less processing units. An increase of 12% in speed while a 10% drop in processing units.
What I said before I really stand by. Cards with crappy fans run hot. Cards with good fans run cool. After the disaster that was my 4850 I know damn well that from now on I will be buying either a card with a good fan installed or installing my own.

Other than that this card looks good.
