[PORN ON] Wii overreact!

edited January 2007 in Games and Technology
So it begins.
They were two of the hottest Christmas gifts: Nintendo's Wii and Sony's Playstation 3 game consoles.

But these machines aren't just hot among kids; they're also compatible with sexually-oriented Web sites.

Not only can your child access pornography along with WarioWare and Guitar Hero; the porn industry is advertising to target those toys.

For Laurn Schroeder, protecting her first grade girls is a priority. "[They're] innocent, and we want to try and keep them that way," she said."

But because the Wii, the PS3 and other game consoles have Internet access, it's easy for kids to access porn.

Has anyone tried using the parental controls yet to see what they can do? Is there anything that makes it difficult for kids to use the web browser if their parents don't want them to?

Do the consoles pull the porn out of the air like magic?

On the Wii, you can choose to not download the browser, and turn off the shop channel in the parental settings, therefore preventing use of the browser. Or, just disable net access on it.

Or, just disable the browser, that would work, too.

I guess we should start not letting kids touch PCs and Macs, too.

Wii does. You need the $600 model of PS3 to achieve that level of stupidity on their end. Go Sony.

But, you see, PCs aren't magic porn grabbing machines. It's much more difficult for a child to get at the content on those. Apparently.

Ah. So thats why its $600? To protect the children? Makes total sense now.

This is exactly why the 360 doesn't have a browser built-in. Microsoft KNOWS the internet and understands the frail american sensibilities about naughty pictures (but strangely enough graphic violence and gore is OK).

Frankly I'm suprised MS even allowed a camera, given how many people likely proceeded to photograph and gamertag their wangs.

The answer is simple: PS3/Wii need to come out with either some blocking software or parental controls to shut off the browser.

    *sigh*

If you allow your kids to access any web enable device without your supervision, don't be surprised if they access pr0n. What's more, the Wii is wireless, so all it takes is a bit of tweaking in your wireless settings to control when the Wii even has internet access. Or you could block entire domains.

The tools are there and it's not anyone's fault if you're too lazy or technically illiterate to take the time to figure them out and use them. I've said it before and I'll say it again: if you don't want your kids accessing internet pr0n, watch them while they use the internet or don't let them get on the internet at all.

Only people on you friends list can see your wang gamertag. Now, that doesn't stop people from wacking it in a game of UNO.

The Wii does have Parental Controls to shut off the browser. Hence no valid complaints from any parents.

It is unfortunate that the Wii cannot be easily given a suitable name, like the PSP could.

Playstation Pornable still makes me laugh.

In the future sadly I see one of 2 things happening. Parents will start parenting or the interwebs will be regulated by the government and each website will have a rating. Oh zomg penny arcade rated M for mature

What is with these idiots? "Compatible"?

They're websites. You use a browser to get to them. The Wii and PS3 have browsers. The syllogism is easy to follow.

(Yes, I know there are porn sites that are now focusing on the Wii. Still.)

Also, somebody should tell the moron writing the piece that neither system has a Guitar Hero game, and the PS3 will not play the PS2 Guitar Hero games (something to do with the way the PS3 reads the guitar controller).

This topic will appear every time any new console is released, forever.

I'm waiting for a parent to sue LG because little Timmy found pornography on one of their overpriced "Internet Ready" refridgerators.
