yet, i found volunteering fulfilling because it made me feel better about myself, i could put my fists on my hips and be like "i'm not an irredeemable son of a bitch, no sir! i volunteer at a family lodge that the hospital runs! i help and comfort people!"
so, other people i knew there would like, emotionally burn out after a month or two and i'd keep on trucking no matter what horrible stories i'd hear because i didn't really let any of it emotionally register
now, i am a far healthier human being, psychologically
the downside of which is i actually get upset by these things now on a level i didn't before

and not just in a "can't use the left half of my body" kind of way, either

I went through a related phase in my teens. I was really morbid and could deal with messed up shit, and I started getting really into forensic science. I don't mean like I watched CSI and liked it; I mean I watched those real forensics-files shows and I was in serious study to become a forensic scientist. Then I heard about some police who went into a house and found some woman's murdered children in the washing machine, and imagined myself being the investigator called to the scene.
I immediately quit studying forensic science and shifted gears.
pro: i am capable of forming meaningful relationships with others and exhibiting instinctive empathy for my fellow man
con: i got a lot more accomplished when i didn't give a fuck about people, including somethings that were ultimately helpful to others
pro: i actually am able to look at most of my life and regret the amoral scumfuck i used to be and not feel that things were better and easier back then
con: PTSD

monday i go visit my neurologist for the first time in a year
he's going to check my brain to see what damage, if any, is beginning to heal and what stuff looks like its permanent and if there's been any significant changes
also possibly figure out why i keep having seizures and losing the ability to speak and read randomly
slap some stem cells in your brain and get that shit fixed
