Let's Play F.E.A.R. Extraction Point - Set 9 - Thats the end?

edited February 2010 in Games and Technology
Welcome to the Let's Play of F.E.A.R. Extraction Point

fearextractionpoint.jpg

This will be my 10th Let’s Play for Penny Arcade!

I started this one because it seemed the right thing to do, a follow up to my last F.E.A.R. LP. Since F.E.A.R. was so fun, I am hoping this will be amazing.

So, what’s F.E.A.R. Extraction Point about?

Expansion to the first F.E.A.R. game, it carries on the (now non canon) story further, with more Mooks, Ninjas, Heavies and pinch of scary girl.
Slow-Mo visceral combat and Mr. Shotty in spades!
Once again I haven't played this before, so everything should be a nice suprise.

What's Wikipedia say about it?

F.E.A.R. Extraction Point is an expansion pack for the horror themed first-person shooter computer and video game F.E.A.R., published by Vivendi Universal and developed by TimeGate Studios, rather than Monolith Productions, the developers of F.E.A.R.. It was released on October 24, 2006 for Windows and requires the full original game in order to be played. Also, a stand-alone single player demo has been previously released.

This expansion owes its name to the game's ultimate goal for the player, to reach the extraction point and leave the city where the adventure takes place. Extraction Point adds new weapons, enemies, and single-player levels, but no new multiplayer content. Additional improvements were also made to the enemy artificial intelligence.[1] The sequel to F.E.A.R., F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, ignores the events of both expansion packs.

I too, was sad when they didn't make an appearance, for Mr. Shotty to introduce himself.

I bet it feels good to have a cool shotgun again.

Ahh Extraction Point, or as I call it "the game where it became painfully obvious FEAR was never, ever, ever going to finish what it started."

More of the same gunplay is not a bad thing when the gunplay was pretty tight to begin with, however. Especially when coupled with the best shotgun ever. Anyway, great sets Hello. Looking forward to your eventual run-in with more NINJAS!* :^:

*ninjas may also refer to ninja-like enemies that are not technically, though functionally identical to, ninjas

Never going to finish what it started? Do you mean that they are just going to do 2 games and then switch to a new franchise?

Can you tell I'm bitter about NOLF?

I checked these out already and was wondering whether or not there'd be a thread for them. Glad there is, so I can talk of the awesomeness.

Like in the first set, about a minute into the third video. Blasting that guy through the window...man, I -really- like the 'dying' physics of the game.

I forgot how badass FEAR's shotgun was. I'm tempted to marathon the FEAR LP again.

I sympathize. NOLF deserved far, far better a fate.

But put it this way: I wish they'd give up on FEAR. There's no closure and there's never going to be any closure, and in a just world that would carry some kind of fine, or at least a public flogging.

    Oh well.

    Oh well.

Maybe FEAR 3 will start with Fear guy...and then it all blows up and it says the end. Then we can be happy its over.

Truth be known I was hoping for some kind of Condemned tie-in. Like, you get to the end and suddenly Ethan Thomas goes into SlowMo and snap-kicks SKX into a vending machine or something. Then, due to a freak accident he's rendered mute. And then suddenly, ninjas.

That would've been rad for at least, like, five minutes.

Pfft, if it was DLC for fear 2, that would be longer than the last load we got, so i'd be happy.

except replace the crappy movie with the FEAR 2 ending.

Just checked, NOLF is not on Steam. And yeah, Monolith is never going to be able to have closure on the FEAR storyline because when you do a work about an unspeakable, undefeatable evil, you can't ever have a "good guys win!" ending, and anytime the bad guy would win we'd just have more cliffhanger endings like the end of the first game. It's like trying to humanize Hannibal Lecter, which they tried to do and it didn't work.

This game is only mildly scary, since I'm not the one playing and I've got some cheeky British narration on each video.

Unless of course you got to the phone jump scare part and your father grabs you on the shoulder from behind.

Also, totally not racist to think the scary black man is scary.

edit: Helloween should totally do NOLF as his next LP.

So, one team mate down. On the plus side, his death was absolutely awesome. I thought F.E.A.R. 2 had awesome death scenes for your mates but they were nothing compared to that. Now it's down to Jin. Will she survive or is she doomed to die a horrible death? I'm gonna bet myself a pair of custard doughnuts that her days are numbered.

And damn if that first ninja didn't make me jump. I was almost certain that it was ninja time after it shinned up that vent and there was a dark area and creepy music around the next corner but even so...

Anyway, looking forward to the next set.

Edit: I'd like to see Cryostasis as well. It sounds interesting.

I found Extraction Point creepier than the original F.E.A.R. I spent so long wandering around that going "The FUCK is going on?" When EP hit, I knew what had happened. I knew Alma was semi-after me, and that was terrifying.

Man, poor Holiday. Even being scary black guy couldn't save him from being first to die. Well, technically something like tenth if you're counting FEAR, but whatever. Also, the triumphant return of the ninjas was everything I thought it could be.

Cryostasis doesn't have much in the way of jump moments; it's more of a creepy, slow-burning kind of tension. Pretty interesting though. It's nice to have an action/horror game where somebody's not yammering in your ear every five minutes telling you exactly where to look and what to pick up.
