So apparently something from space hit Mexico on Wednesday.

Some were speculating that it was a fragment of a Russian satellite slated to deorbit itself soon, but that appears to be untrue.

in science news: Whistle-Blowing Nurse Is Acquitted in Texas
A West Texas jury took but an hour Thursday to acquit a nurse who had been charged with a felony after alerting the state medical board that a doctor at her hospital was practicing unsafe medicine.

The uncommon prosecution had ignited deep concern among health care workers and advocates for whistle-blowers about a potential chilling effect on the reporting of malpractice.

But after a four-day trial in Andrews, Tex., a state court jury quickly found that the nurse, Anne Mitchell, was not guilty of the third-degree felony charge of “misuse of official information.” Conviction could have carried a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a fine of up to $10,000.

God damn it, I was all excited to post this and then this fucking flying missile-killing laser pops up.

    I still think it's cool.

This is a Mosquito getting killed by a Laser
The idea behind the laser is that it could be used to control mosquito populations in developing countries in hopes of reducing the number of deaths due to malaria, a disease frequently carried by the flying insects. The device was shown off during the TED 2010 conference and does in fact appear to be capable of tracking and killing mosquitoes. Oh, and it was built out of parts found on eBay.

Little stuff doesn't stop being cool just because something bigger shows up. You might be able to level a city with a nuke, but C4 is still pretty neat.
