Need "safe for work" old school hip hop/rap

ManonvonSuperockManonvonSuperock Registered User regular
edited February 2010 in Help / Advice Forum
I'm building a playlist for a high school class while we study graffiti art. I want some old school jams playing in the class, but I need to make sure that each song lyrically is clean enough to play in the classroom.

Suggest away, and if possible copy and paste the lyrics into a spoiler tag for me.

thanks.

    The Message

The Message is great, but it definitely skirts SFW/Highschool.

There was an album put out years ago called The Showdown, it was supposed to be like a "rap battle" between Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. It has a pretty decent selection of the main tracks from both groups, and Ice T and Chuck D provide some commentary in between tracks. If you can find the actual CD the liner notes are pretty awesome, they've got a lot of information as to the history of both groups, as well as the tensions between them. Amazon has it for $9.

    Fantastic Voyage is also awesome.

Some of these recommendations may not work. For example, "Rappers Delight" has the line "bust her out with my super-sperm" (which may not be in the edited down, shorter version), and "Fight The Power" has the lines "Elvis was a hero to most but he never meant shit to me / Straight up racist the sucker was simple and plain / Motherfuck him and John Wayne."

    Other suggestions:

    Kurtis Blow - "The Breaks"
Will Smith (or, for the old school, DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince) - "Parents Just Don't Understand"
Eric B & Rakim - "Paid In Full"
Biz Markie - "Just A Friend"
Boogie Down Productions - "Stop The Violence" (may be a bit too political, depending on your school)

Yeah De La is probably my favourite rap group tied with Tribe called quest.

Will Smith - Summertime, totally classic track
    Intro/chorus: *sung*

    Summer, summer, summertime
Time to sit back and unwind

    Verse one: fresh prince

Here it is the groove slightly transformed
Just a bit of a break from the norm
Just a little somethin to break the monotony
Of all that hardcore dance that has gotten to be
A little bit out of control its cool to dance
But what about the groove that soothes that moves romance
Give me a soft subtle mix
And if aint broke then dont try to fix it
And think of the summers of the past
Adjust the base and let the alpine blast
Pop in my cd and let me run a rhyme
And put your car on cruise and lay back cause this is summertime

    Chorus

    Verse two: fresh prince

School is out and its a sort of a buzz
A back then I didnt really know what it was
But now I see what have of this
The way that people respond to summer madness
The weather is hot and girls are dressing less
And checking out the fellas to tell em whos best
Riding around in your jeep or your benzos
Or in your nissan stting on lorenzos
Back in philly we be ou in the park
A place called the plateau is where everybody goes
Guys out hunting and girls doing likewise
Honking at the honey in front of you with the light eyes
She turn around to see what you beeping at
Its like the summers a natural afradesiac
And with a pen and pad I compose this rhyme
To hit you and get you equipped for the summer time

    Chorus

    Verse three: fresh prince

Its late in the day and I aint been on the court yet
Hustle to the mall to get me a short set
Yeah I got on sneaks but I need a new pair
Cause basketball courts in the summer got girls there
    The temperatures about 88
Hop in the water plug just for old times sake
Break to ya crib change your clothes once more
Cause youre invited to a barbeque thats starting at 4
Sitting with your friends cause yall remincise
About the days growing up and the first person you kiss
And as I think back makes me wonder how
The smell from a grill could spark up nostalgia
All the kids playing out front
Little boys messin round with the girls playing double-dutch
While the djs spinning a tune as the old folks dance at your family
    Reunion
    Then six oclock rolls around
You just finished wiping your car down
Its time to cruise so you head to the summertime hangout
It looks like a car show
    Everybody come lookin real fine
Fresh from the barber shop or fly from the beauty salon
    Every moment frontin and maxin
Chillin in the car they spent all day waxin
Leanin to the side but you cant spead through
Two miles an hour so everybody sees you
Theres an air of love and of happiness
And this is the fresh princes new defintion of summer madness

    Chorus

Any reason you couldn't use more recent stuff?

Lupe Fiasco or DL incognito would give you some good stuff to work with, I'd bet.

Edit: Oh yeah, and Mos Def. Earlier the better is the consensus on his albums I think, although there's some good tracks on all of them.

De La Soul and Tribe. Jurassic Five is more contemporary but a lot of their stuff has the same kind of feel.

There are plenty of songs by more famous artists that are "work safe," you'd just have to be selective rather than putting on a whole album.

What words are you trying to make sure aren't included? Just profanity and slurs, or are you worried about violence/sex/drugs related themes, too?

Big Daddy Kane - Ain't No Half Steppin'.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfjF4yr8GVA

    lyrics:
    Ah Yeah
    I’m with this
I’m just gonna sit here laid back to this nice mellow beat, you know
    And drop some smooth lyrics
    Cause it’s ‘88
Time to set it straight, knowwhatI’msaying
    And ain’t no half stepping
    Word
    I’m ready

Rappers stepping to me they want to get some
But I’m the Kane, so yo, you know the outcome
    Another victory
    They can’t get with me
So pick a BC date cause you’re history
I’m the authentic poet to get lyrical
For you to beat me, it’s gonna take a miracle
And, stepping to me, yo that’s the wrong move
So what you on, Hobbs, dope or dog food?
    Competition I just devour
Like a pitbull against a Chihuahua
Cause when it comes to being dope, hot damn
I got it good, now let me tell you who I am
    The B-I-G D-A-double D-Y K-A-N-E
    Dramatic, Asiatic, not like many
I’m different, so don’t compare me to another
Cause they can’t hang, word to the mother
At least not with the principal in this pedigree
So when I roll on you rappers, you better be
Ready to die because you’re petty
    You’re just a butter knife, I’m a machete
That’s made by Ginzu, wait until when you
Try to front, so I can chop into
Your body, just because you try to be basing
Friday the 13th, I’mma play Jason
No type of joke, gag, game, puzzle or riddle
The name is Big Daddy, yes Big not little
    So define it
Here’s your walking papers, sign it
    And take a walk
As the Kane start to talk, cause...

    Ain’t no half-steppin’
    I’m the Big Daddy Kane
    (3 times)

My rhymes are so dope and
    The rappers be hoping
To sound like me, so soon I’ll have to open
A school of MCing, for those who want to be in
    My field in court
    Then again on second thought
To have MC’s coming out sounding so similar
It’s quite confusing for you to remember
The originator, and boy do I hate a
    Perpetrator, but I’m much greater
The best oh yes I guess suggest the rest should fess
Don’t mess or test your highness
Unless you just address with best finesse
And bless the paragraph I manifest
Rap prime minister, some say sinister
Non-stopping the groove, until when it’s the
Climax, and I max, relax and chill
Have a break from a take of me acting ill
Brain cells are lit, ideas start to hit
Next the formation of words that fit
At the table I sit, making it legit
And when my pen hits the paper, ahh shit!
I stop and stand strong over MC’s
And devour with the power of Hercules
Or Samson, but I go further the length
Cause you could scalp my cameo and I’ll still have strength
And no, that’s not a myth, and if you try to riff
Or get with, the man with the given gift of gab
    Your vocab, I’ll only ignore
Be sleeping on your rhymes till I start to snore
You can’t awake me, or even make me
Fear you, son, cause you can’t do me none
So, think about it if you’re trying to go
When you want to step to me, I think you should know that...

    Ain’t no half-steppin’
    I’m the Big Daddy Kane
    (3 times)

I appear right here and scare and dare
A mere musketeer that would dare to compare
Put him in the rear, back there where he can’t see clear
Get a beer, idea or near stare, yeah
So on to be want to be competition
Trying to step to me--must be on a mission
Up on the stage is where I’mma get you at
    You think I’m losing?
    Psst, picture that...

    Ain’t no half-steppin’
    (3 times)
    Mister Cee, step to me...

The name is Big Daddy, you know, as in your father
So when you hear a def rhyme, believe that I’m the author
I grab the mic and make MC’s evaporate
The party people say, damn...that rapper’s great
    The creator conductor of poetry
Et cetera, et cetera, it ain’t easy being me
I speak clearly so you can understand
Put words together like letter, man
Now that’s dictation, proceeding to my innovation
Not like the other MC’s, who are an imitation
Or an animation, a cartoon to me
But when I’m finished, I’m sure that you are soon to see
    Reality, my secret technique
Because I always speak with mentality
I put my title in your face, dare you to base
And if you try and come get it, yo I’mma show you who’s with it
So if you know like I know, instead of messing around
Play like Roy Rogers and slooow doown
Just give yourself a break, or someone else will take
Your title, namely me, cause I’m homicidal
That means murder, cause I’m about to hurt a-
Nother MC, that try to get with me
I’ll just break him and bake him and rake him
and take him and mold him and make him
    Hold up the peace sign...
    Assalam Walaikum!

Maestro Fresh Wes - Let Your Backbone Slide

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pzull7scV2Y

    lyrics:
    Intro:

    This is a throw-down, a show-down
hell no, I can't slow down
    It's gonna go

    Verse One:

This jam is amplified, so just glide, and let your backbone slide
you listen to every word I say
I every verb you heard I play snaps your vertabre
you try to cover, a hover me, a roast, a fake, a flag, then I run a post
    toast, I'm the most
    d-e-f's how it goes
    no x's or o's or tic-tac-toes
LTD knows, this ain't a game, I'm on a mission
    call me a hip-hop, tip-tac-tition
I rap just like a slab of clay that's shapeless
    I know glass is tasteless
I unviverse without light is lightless
that's why I always take time to right this
I mold it in my hands before I start chiselin
could be a rain, a brainstorm, or drizzlin
sun could be shining, sun could be showerin
prabtismic's verb, and I'm powerin, flowerin
    my lyrics are awesome
tunin' from human, bloomin' a blossom
    blowing away blockades and barracades
make ya black and blue from the blast and the blaze
it's a bloodsport, bloods builds up back
I make your vision go blue while your brain goes black into oblivion
beats from box to box to bates
    rocks from blocks and blocks
    let your backbone slide

    Verse Two:

just let it slide, y'all I don't give a damn
    if ya backbone quiver
man oh man, why'd ya swiver
wind some twine your spine while your slither
    it's contagious, an epidemic
you try to lift, you're cool, but it feel again
or a scholar, sold like a
but like I said before, I'm not American
it's who you are, not the way you went
we all originate from the same descent
I make alot of cents/sense, and pence
    gold (gold), murr and frankencense
when I'm in France they blow me francs
frank, with your swiss account is the way I bank-pank
at home, I make bills a brown from my sound
in the states green like the grass in the ground
when I'm in England, they pass me pounds now
I collect cash in every town, so I slide (slide)
    but nowadays, I'm trapped
    (why's that?)
so many suckers on my sac-ro-illeac
    it's like a rap-sack, backpack
    (wic-wic-whack)
    give me some slack jack
    rap is like a jungle
where rhyme for rhyme is like a vine to vine
swung line to line of mine
    I'm collossal, you'se a mosquito
I'ma play Tarzan, you play Cheetah
    cheeta, biter, love to forge
better yet, I'll call you Kurious George
cause curiosty cold killed the cat
can't hide so blind to the side
    let your backbone slide

    Verse Three:

    the keyword is synchronism
yo, check out my homeboy dance to the rythym
and hey, this hey, oh, this hey
    I'm coming double-f
    fortissamo, f-f for funkey fresh
    my DJ is LTD, mellow-flex
    you listen to the poetry
vocabularly golden, beats from my rollin
stone cold lyrics from the microphone I'm holdin
words I rip, egos I strip
I make sucker cruise kick, kick band I flick
I get busy, they're dizzy, they start to collide
they should've stepped of, I let it slide
but now they got brasen, dry like a raisin
I glaze like a vase, I smash you like daze
until they realize, they shouldn't have ripped
cause they deny y'all, not be told
this is a throwdown, I'm conducting it
    it's like a highrise, I'm constructing it
was once thoughts, pen, and paper
    now it's a tower, a soul, a skyscraper
it's getting out of hand after I aided a monster
my musical mono-louge makes you wanna
    move with the maestro
you feel high so a set, the blend, a presendo is nice yo
I'm the guy, the rhythm is a ride
to the fresh side, let your backbone slide

    this is a throwdown

Black Eyed Peas have been around since the mid 90's and made some really decent stuff in their early years. It might even help to give the class an artist who is both big now and was around back then.

You don't understand the phrase "old school jams" do you? Silly goose. This is silly goose music. Only silly gooses listen to Black Eyed Peas.

Anything by Digable Planets will work though. Positive and good!

Maybe some KMD or 3rd Bass?

Black Eyed Peas have been around since the mid 90's and made some really decent stuff in their early years. It might even help to give the class an artist who is both big now and was around back then.

1995 doesn't qualify as "old school". You're looking at about 92 and back to hit that qualification. The golden age of hip-hop and previous.

I'm not gonna get into a retarded argument with you about this. If you want to go with the definition of old school rap, you'd be looking as late as the mid 80's at the LATEST, and you're suggestions would even be exempt. But I took the OP to be looking for some solid hip hop with a good message that he can play while teaching about graffiti that'll just help make the class more fun, in which case he can decide for himself what he'd like.

I'm not too sure about KMD or 3rd Bass. Rapping about constipated monkeys, and one of the first appearances by Nas proclaiming how he's 'wavin' automatic guns at nuns'.

And "Old School" technically means Grandmaster Flash,Sugarhill Gang type stuff. Golden Age refers from about '86 to '95, but really, there is still *very* good hip-hop coming out these days.... You just won't hear it on major radio stations or see music videos for it.

Oh, they're certainly not high art, but fun in a much better way than say...Will Smith.

And there's nothing like seeing Henry Rollins dressed up like Vanilla Ice.

    The Message

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4o8TeqKhgY

That was my first thought as well, but yeah, language is probably not appropriate, especially the use of "fag"

    How about,

    Erik B & Rakim:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPfIIn5V_LQ
    I was a fiend before I became a teen
I melted microphone instead of cones of ice cream
Music orientated so when hip-hop was originated
Fitted like pieces of puzzles, complicated
’cause I grabbed the mic and try to say, yes y’all!
They tried to take it, and say that I’m too small
Cool, ’cause I don’t get upset
I kick a hole in the speaker, pull the plug, then I jet
Back to the lab ...without a mic to grab
So then I add all the rhymes I had
One after the other one, then I make another one
To dis the opposite then ask if the brother’s done
I get a craving like I fiend for nicotine
But I don’t need a cigarette, know what I mean?
I’m raging, ripping up the stage and
Don’t it sound amazing ’cause every rhyme is made and
Thought of, cuz it’s sort of...an addiction,
    Magnatized by the mixing
Vocals, vocabulary, your verses, you’re stuck in
The mic is a drano, volcanoes erupting,
    Rhymes overflowing, gradually growing
Everything is written in the cold, so it can coin-
    Cide, my thoughts to guide,
    48 tracks to slide
    The invincible, microphone fiend rakim
Spread the word, ’cause I’m in
    E-f-f-e-c-t
    A smooth operator operating correctly,
But back to the problem, I gotta habit,
You can’t solve it, silly rabbit
The prescription is a hypertone that’s thorough when
I fiend for a microphone like herion
Soon as the bass kicks, I need a fix
Gimme a stage and a mic and a mix
And I’ll put you in a mood or is it a state of
    Unawareness? beware, it’s the reanamator!
A menace to a microphone, a lethal weapon
An assasinator, if the people ain’t stepping
You see a part of me that you never seen
When I’m fiending for a microphone, I’m the microphone fiend...

    (verse 2:)
    After 12, I’m worse that a gremlin
Feed me hip-hop and I start trembling
The thrill of suspense is intense, your horrified
But this ain’t the cinemas of tales from the darkside,
By any means neccesary, this is what has to be done
Make way ’cause here I come....
    My dj cuts material....
    Grand imperial.
It’s a must that I bust any mic you’re hand to me,
It’s inherited, it’s runs in the family
I wrote the rhyme that broke the bull’s back,
If that don’t slow ’em up, I carry a full pack.
Now I don’t want to have to let off, you should of kept off
You didn’t keep the stage warm, step off!
Ladies and gentleman, you’re about to see
A pasttime hobby about to be
Take it to the maximum, I can’t relax see, i’m
Hype as a hyperchrondriac ’cause the rap be one-
Hell of a antidote, something you can’t smoke
More than dope, you’re trying to move away but you can’t, you’re broke
More than cracked up, you should have backed up
For those who act up need to be more than smacked up
Any entertainer, I got a torture chamber
One on one and I’m the remainder!
So close your eyes and hold your breath,
And I’m a hit’cha wit the blow of death
Before you go, you’ll remember you seen
The fiend of a microphone, I’m the microphone fiend

    The microphone fiend...

Or, Paid in Full, the seven minute remix.

    Thinkin of a master plan
Cuz ain't nuthin but sweat inside my hand
So I dig into my pocket, all my money is spent
So I dig deeper but still comin up with lint
So I start my mission- leave my residence
Thinkin how could I get some dead presidents
I need money, I used to be a stick-up kid
So I think of all the devious things I did
I used to roll up, this is a hold up, ain't nuthin funny
Stop smiling, be still, don't nuthin move but the money
But now I learned to earn cos I'm righteous
I feel great! so maybe I might just
    Search for a 9 to 5, if I strive
    Then maybe I'll stay alive
So I walk up the street whistlin this
Feelin out of place cos, man, do I miss
A pen and a paper, a stereo, a tape of
Me and Eric B, and a nice big plate of
Fish, which is my favorite dish
But without no money it's still a wish
Cos I don't like to dream about gettin paid
So I dig into the books of the rhymes that I made
To now test to see if I got pull
Hit the studio, cos I'm paid in full

For 80's Rapping Cowboy action, Kool Moe Dee has you covered.

Oh they were dope for sure (They launched MF Doom & MC Serch's careers respectively), I'm just not too sure what the OP is looking for (no profanity? no sexual innuendos? etc.)

    Let's see...

EPMD - You Gots to Chill
LL Cool J - I can't live without my Radio
Biz Markie - Nobody beats the Biz (The Vapors is also nice, but drops an N-bomb or two as I recall)
MC Lyte - Cha Cha Cha

Pretty much all Run DMC. The mid to late 80's have a ton to draw from.

I wanted to give an early 90s/late 80s vibe in the class, and get a couple of laughs out of the kids as the demographic of the school I'm at leaves me with a bunch of kids big into modern rap, lil wayne and stuff.

so the playlist I started using today had a lot of will smith, some fat boys, a couple of tribe called quest songs, some grandmaster flash, sugar hill gang, etc.

feel free to keep suggesting, I'll keep adding stuff to the playlist.

in fact, if there's any song at all by Slick Rick that's vulgarity-free, I'd be all over that, but I don't think there is.. ha
