I'm building a playlist for a high school class while we study graffiti art. I want some old school jams playing in the class, but I need to make sure that each song lyrically is clean enough to play in the classroom.

The REALLY old stuff is mostly safe for work.
The Message is great, but it definitely skirts SFW/Highschool.
There was an album put out years ago called The Showdown, it was supposed to be like a "rap battle" between Sugarhill Gang and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. It has a pretty decent selection of the main tracks from both groups, and Ice T and Chuck D provide some commentary in between tracks. If you can find the actual CD the liner notes are pretty awesome, they've got a lot of information as to the history of both groups, as well as the tensions between them. Amazon has it for $9.

Lupe Fiasco or DL incognito would give you some good stuff to work with, I'd bet.
Edit: Oh yeah, and Mos Def. Earlier the better is the consensus on his albums I think, although there's some good tracks on all of them.
There are plenty of songs by more famous artists that are "work safe," you'd just have to be selective rather than putting on a whole album.
What words are you trying to make sure aren't included? Just profanity and slurs, or are you worried about violence/sex/drugs related themes, too?

Black Eyed Peas have been around since the mid 90's and made some really decent stuff in their early years. It might even help to give the class an artist who is both big now and was around back then.

1995 doesn't qualify as "old school". You're looking at about 92 and back to hit that qualification. The golden age of hip-hop and previous.
I'm not gonna get into a retarded argument with you about this. If you want to go with the definition of old school rap, you'd be looking as late as the mid 80's at the LATEST, and you're suggestions would even be exempt. But I took the OP to be looking for some solid hip hop with a good message that he can play while teaching about graffiti that'll just help make the class more fun, in which case he can decide for himself what he'd like.
And "Old School" technically means Grandmaster Flash,Sugarhill Gang type stuff. Golden Age refers from about '86 to '95, but really, there is still *very* good hip-hop coming out these days.... You just won't hear it on major radio stations or see music videos for it.
