I would assert that that level of familiarity with the subject matter is insufficient for humor to arise from the picture.
As evidence, these guys:
seem to be genuinely enjoying themselves. To me, that quote might as well be a random excerpt from a dissertation on Linear B for all I can glean from it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to reference humor on principle or anything. I usually just ignore it when I don't get it. I was simply annoyed by the fact that this is reference humor which requires knowledge of not one but two completely disparate pop-culture phenomena that I don't give a shit about.
It is when you know why those faces were pasted onto those particular Pocket Monsters
