because I just kinda threw together a team out of dudes I liked and moves I thought would be useful without any real attention paid to their actual role in a fight working as a team
probably gonna end up breeding a brand new crobat and tentacruel along with another two or three brand new pokes that I can switch in when needed
my stupidity almost cost me the game at the very end

does it just straight up boost all stats of the 'mon, or do you choose the stats so there is kind of a strategy involved in it?
You choose the stats.
Every Pokemon can have 510 EVs total, and up to 255 points in any one stat. every 4 EVs equates to one extra point in that stat at level 100.
You get EVs from fighting and what kind of EVs you get depends on what you fight. For instance if you fight Zubats, which are fast, you gain speed EVs.
There's also vitamins that will give you 10 Evs in a certain stat. They stop working once the Pokemon accrues 100 Evs in the stat though.

also I found out that you can still use stealth rock after the other pokemon explodes? that doesn't make a lick of sense
