KOTOR PC Weird Error Message

ugh. So I'm trying to play KOTOR for PC and it's all installed and stuff. But then I launch the game and it just brings up an alert box that says random crap, like
and that's it. then it quits.
My specs:
Athlon 64 3700+ 2.2 GHz
2 GB RAM
GeForce GT 220 1GB
Windows XP
Anyone ever experience this or know what the hell I can do to fix it?
edit: running in windows compatibility mode fixed the problem. mods: you can lock this.
