Came across my first hide-and-seek Terran today. It didn't bug me terribly except he said "gg" like halfway through the game and then decided to just turtle up and hide shit everywhere instead of leave. At least I got to really use Ultralisks in a game for once.

Just kill his CCs, then all his buildings are automatically revealed.

Yeah, except CCs were the buildings he was hiding. He blew his cash on a BC Army and a well-protected island expansion in the desert oasis map, and once those were gone he GG'd and started turtling up his main and sneaking flying CCs everywhere.

How do you guys handle BC clumps as protoss? So far I think my idea is "don't ever let them get there," because woo boy my AA is shitty.

Protoss isn't a real race anyways.

Why don't you black hole the clump and drop a psi storm.

Drop it when they come out? They will be all clumped up, and it's likely the protoss player knows the timing of black hole better than his enemy.

That makes sense, I'll try that.

It should be noted that I am utterly garbage at this game, and the one time I tried using the hole I sucked up my army instead. Whooooooops

On Win 7 it's: C:\Users\<User Name>\Documents\StarCraft II Beta\Maps\Cache I believe, so translate that to XP if needed.

Yeah I was looking in there earlier, all I see is .bin files that are too small to be actual map files.

Man, early Reapers are still devastating. I've got a nice build going here for Terran. I basically get the Reaper speed boost, +1 weapon strength, and move out when I have 14 reapers total. The group of them are faster than anything I've come across (zealots, roaches, zerglings) - so they can take down virtually any other similiarly-sized army - and they rape buildings. They can take down a Protoss nexus in a matter of four or five volleys. Other buildings go down super quick. Since they're faster than everything else, you can do some major harassment as you macro up a different tech back at base.

They don't even need cliff jumping, really, though it's nice. The speed upgrade is what really makes them devastating.

Reapers are particularly brutal on any map where an easy expansion spot is covered by a cliff. Tanks on a cliff is scary, of course, but reapers are faster and more mobile.

I'd be a bit nervous about overcommitting to reapers, 14 sounds like plenty of gas invested into a harassment unit and if your harassment is shut down you've really vulnerable.

Which is really more an argument to harass carefully. Reapers are pretty boss.

Question for you: Is there any particular reason you invest in weapon upgrades ASAP? I suspect that time and money could be better invested in teching to whatever it is you want to tech to. Does the level 1 upgrade change some critical early matchups?

yeah that seems like a huge gas investment for a harassment strat. It seems too dependent on how the harassment goes, even for a build like that. i'm not comfortable with those micro based builds but they work for some people.

that said i don't know what the counter is i guess. I'd be knocking on your door with early stalkers, probably.

i suspect roaches would also destroy reapers huh

I'm not sure about the level 1 upgrade changing anything. It's more a matter of me having the extra time and the extra minerals to build an engineering bay, but not enough gas to afford a third barracks+tech lab pumping out more reapers. Given that the base attack of a reaper is 4, that extra +1 attack appears to help a bunch when destroying things.

And, of course, the weapons upgrade is helpful in the long term. I don't want to give the impression that this first attack is the only real attack - I do as much damage as I can with the reapers and then tech to something else.

Roaches are annoying - but the Reapers are way faster and can simply outrun them.

Also keep in mind that I'm at the copper league :P So most of my opponents suck (as much as me).

  • InquisitorInquisitor Registered User regular
Part of me wants to question the notion of reapers as only for harass. They have 5 more HP than marines until you upgrade marines, move much faster than marines (especially upgraded) and do 2 more damage than marines per volley against units with 0 armor, and do 12 damage more than marines per volley against light units with zero armor. Against roaches they do 4 damage a volley just like marines, but move faster and still out range the roaches. Of course, doing the same damage while costing 50 gas more isn't anything to brag about.

Perhaps that its simply that hellions do the anti-light job better, but, it's always good to question our idea that a unit is only good for harass. Reapers are perhaps the best ground based answer terran has for immortals. And reapers paired with medivacs sound like possibly a very tough mobile attack force.

Edit: Looking at the wiki Terran has tons of upgrades for units in the campaign only that would be absolutely amazing if they showed up in the game. Reapers in the campaign can be upgraded to have +2 range, for example. Reapers with that range + speed would be a very hard to deal combat unit for some armies with proper micros. Another example campaign only upgrade is hellions leaving a damage over time with their attack, this would make them such an amazing harassment unit in multiplayer.

Jesus, 40 build time versus 20 build time and 2 marines can be built at once via reactor, you're right.

You'd need a lot of barracks. Of course, you could always go for some kind of mixed marine/reaper maybe even marauder thing, but then you sacrifice the speed advantage and mobility of reapers, hurm.
