PAX East '10 Console Tournaments: Pemco Edition

Zig21Zig21 Registered User regular
edited March 2010 in PAX Archive
Why Pemco, you ask? 'cause we're borrowing their slogan for the PAX East console tournaments: "A little different." Does this mean we'll feature 50 Degrees Shirt's Off Guy? Hopefully not, although you never know given how crazy PAX can be.

Anyway, the first PAX East tournaments are gonna be a little experiment. The emphasis will be on smaller, faster tournaments, with multiple events being run simultaneously. We'll still have two traditionally-sized events (Street Fighter IV and Halo 3), but the rest will be limited to 32 players.

Right now the thread is under construction, so check back later today or tomorrow for details.

This thread is for rules, registration guidelines, updates, schedules, and questions regarding console tournaments ONLY. This thread will NOT cover console freeplay or any other events, including handheld, PC, tabletop, etc. Please note that all information is subject to change between now and March 26th.

Schedule
Friday, March 26th
3:00pm: Group A (DJ Hero, Peggle, Wii Fit Ski Jump)
5:30pm: Group B (Link's Crossbow Training, Super Puzzle Fighter II HD Remix, Worms 2 Armageddon)
8:00pm: Group C (Mario Kart Wii, Ikaruga, Joust)
10:30pm: Group D (Soul Calibur, Geometry Wars 2, Lumines Live!)

Saturday, March 27th
10:30am: Group E (Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting, The Impossible Game, Beautiful Katamari)
12:00pm - 8:00pm: Street Fighter IV (X-Box 360)

Sunday, March 28th
12:00pm - 6:00pm: Halo 3 (X-Box 360)

Registration
  • Registration for ALL console tournaments begins on Friday, March 26th, right outside of the console tournament area.
  • Signups for Saturday and Sunday tournaments will be limited on Friday and Saturday. Unrestricted registration begins 2 hours before a specific event. See an individual tournament's section below for more information.
  • Each tournament has two lists: Main and Standby. Once the Main list has been filled up, you can only sign up on Standby. This means you can only enter the tournament if someone from the Main list fails to show up (odds of this happening are generally pretty good). Entrants from Standby are on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • If you do not have a complete team for a team tourney, you must enter on Standby. If you can subsequently find a team before the tournament starts AND there is room on the Main list, you will be moved into a guaranteed spot. Otherwise, you will be paired up with whoever else we choose from the Standby list.

    Street Fighter IV (X-Box 360)
    When: Saturday (3/27), 12pm - 8pm
Format: 1 vs 1, single elimination
    Cap: 512 players

    Rules
    Versus Mode
    Rounds: 3
    Battle Time: 99 seconds
    Handicap: None
    Random Stage Select ONLY

You may bring your own controller if you wish. For wireless controllers, you MUST have a link cable.

During a match, the winner of an individual game must keep the same character. Loser may switch characters if they wish to do so. This rule ONLY applies to a single opponent. At the start of a new match against another player, you may select any character you want.

To configure your controls, start a match and use the in-game pause menu, then exit back to Character Change. If you forget to do so and start the match, you may pause mid-game to change them BUT your opponent has the option of either restarting the game or resuming as-is.

    Format: Qualifiers
    • Players will be divided into 32 pools, each containing up to 16 players
    • Each pool will be organized into a 16 player single elimination bracket
    • Each match will be best of 3 games
    • The winner of each pool advances to the semi-finals

    Format: Semi-Finals and Finals
    • The winning players from each pool will be re-seeded and placed into a new 32 player single elimination bracket
    • Each match will be best of 3 games
    • If time allows, bracket semi-finals and grand finals will be best of 5 games (grand finals may be best of 7)

    Halo 3 (X-Box 360)
    When: Sunday (3/28), 12pm - 6pm
Format: 4 vs 4, Team Slayer, single elimination
    Cap: 128 teams (512 players)

    Rules
    Team Slayer, 4 vs 4
    First to 50 kills
    15 minute time limit
    5 second respawn time
    10 second suicide penalty
    10 second betrayal penalty
    Starting weapon: Battle Rifle
    No Vehicles
    No radar

You may bring your own controller if you wish. For wireless controllers, you MUST have a link cable.

If you quit the game for ANY reason short of a serious emergency, the current game will proceed without you. If your team wins, you will be allowed to play in the next match. Should your entire team quit without permission, it will count as a forfeit and you will be eliminated from the tournament. This rule also applies if you reset the game or console.

    Maps:*
    Construct, Guardian, Narrows, The Pit

Each round in the bracket will be on a different map. Before each match, both teams may agree to play on any map if they wish to do so.

    *Subject to change.

    Subbing:
    • You may have up to 2 subs maximum, neither of which can be on another team OR on the standby list.
    • You MAY change team configurations before a match. You MAY NOT change team configurations between games within a specific match (assuming a match is best of 3 games or longer).
    • Before a match, if both teams wish to use subs but cannot agree on an order in which to choose team configurations, they may rock-paper-scissors or flip a coin to settle the dispute. If either team does not agree to these terms, double blind picking will be used.

    Format: Qualifiers
    • Teams will be divided into 16 pools, each containing up to 8 teams
    • Each pool will be organized into an 8 team single elimination bracket
    • If time allows, each match will be best of 3 games

    FAQ:
This post will be used to answer popular questions.

Do you know anything about handheld events?
No, now get off my lawn.

When will rules for (insert game) be finished?
Mainly when I get the chance to play everything. SFIV and Halo 3 will be identical to PAX 09, although Halo's map rotation is still TBA (High Ground can suck it after the headaches it caused me last year).

    What are the prizes?
At this time we only plan on providing medals for the top 4 players (top 4 teams for Halo). This doesn't rule out last-minute donations for exhibitors, but don't plan on it.

    Wii Ski?
    Damn right, Wii Ski.

I was wondering if maybe they'd have a PS3 one?

Maybe, considering I hear Akuma is pretty jacked. That being said, it's not like these are gonna be serious tournaments.

Both Akuma and Devilot have same jacked up random drop (Devilot's is reversed from akumas). I would say axe those two (since they are "Hidden" characters) but the rest are legit.

At this time, you may only enter one tournament per group since all games in that group will be run simultaneously. This is by no means final, and might change on the 26th depending on how things go.
    niq24601 wrote: »

They may enter if any participant dies of natural causes during a match. Substitutions will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

But seriously, thanks for pointing that out.:P
