Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
My first laptop runs like shit, forgot whats installed, LSP...blah...
I've had this laptop for a year. It's my first Core 2 Duo. It's an HP and did not come with a restore disk, but lately it's not been running well.
It takes a long time to start up and load any programs. Even Microsoft Word takes a shitload of time to start. Today, for the first time, it acted as if Word was not installed yet. It failed the first installation so I restarted the computer, and it finished successfully.
Also, occasionally, the internet will stop working entirely. If I click on any link I just get the status "Stopped." During these times I make the switch from Firefox to Internet Explorer, and it's diagnostic says
"A required network component is not working properly on this computer
An installed Layer Service Provider (LSP) is Malfunctioning, do you want to remove it?"
I also restart the computer for this.
I'm not familiar with opening up a laptop, but I feel like taking an air can to the guts of this computer. Is anyone else familiar with these problems?
Cantido on
The sound of eight hooves reaches his ears, comes from the heavenly light, two wolves howls fills his heart with fear, and he sees two ravens fly. Down from the sky a warlord rides, like fire his one eye glows, and just before the preacher dies he knows his god is false.
I'd suggest doing two things.. test the hdd, and test the ram. As much fun as it is to blast the dust out of a computer.. it's unlikely to be your problem. Also, try to find a way of getting a restore disk... just to have one on hand if you do ever need it
Honestly, I'd just save myself the trouble of all this and reformat. If you've had it for a year, chances are you don't have Windows 7 install, now's a good a time as any to upgrade.
To get to the HP restore partition, pound F8 before windows starts, go to Repair your computer, the last option will be the restore. Rip all the HP crapware out as soon as you can. (hp update, solution advisor, etc).
I wouldn't bother buying a win7 upgrade for a laptop, personally.

What Security Software do you have running?
Did you clean any of the trial ware out of the Laptop when you bought it?
Also, I would suggest doing a format, either via a restore disk, or with a new copy of windows 7.
