Nintendo announces DS successor... IN 3D?!

It's going to be called the 3DS, will allow for 3D without special glasses, and will be released sometime before March 2011. Backwards compatible with DS and DSi, more details coming at E3..

Something like that would be pretty darn cool, but I have to admit that I can't picture Nintendo using current graphics anymore.

I was still hoping more for Wii HD, but I'll keep an open mind. At least I won't have to buy a DSi XL now.

In Gaf's defense (lol) this has precedence. The DS itself was one of those systems that came out of nowhere and ended up being (arguably) one of the best systems this gen.

And the original hardware sucked so much, holy shit

And yes, NeoGAF is pretty solid Sony territory. Half the avatars on there are either Uncharted or Killzone. They're mostly mature about it, and that's not to say it's a fanboy forum, and they love Xbox and Nintendo too. But if you don't think NeoGAF has a huge hard-on for Sony, you're kidding yourself.

EVERYBODY thought it was going to be a failure. The internet was nothing BUT jokes about the DS for the period between announcement and a month or 2 after launch. It was worse than the Wii name announcement.

I preordered my DS phat and was the only person at gamestop when they opened that morning. Only time I've ever seen such a slow launch day.

Seriously though, I think this could be neat. However I bet it will be impossible to play 3D stuff if the sun is shining right on the system. I can already barely see my DS and PSP when that happens.

I wish Nintendo would just drop the bullshit and make a GameBoy Advance 2. One big screen, a good form factor, throw some buttons on there, spend the rest of the time cranking out AAA releases.

There is a fine line between "innovative" and "gimmicky" and Nintendo is toeing it big time.

I forget which podcast I was listening to but one of the speakers was talking about some kind of multi-level screen technology that creates the illusion of 3D. He theorized that this is what Nintendo would be using next. Gotta wonder now.... seems reasonable.
