It's pretty hilarious how flakey my ex is. We've been out of touch for like two weeks, because her phone was lost. For about the seventh time. She signs on to face book, goes on and on about how much she has missed me. Then she posts "brb."
It has been almost an hour.
did you stop dating because she forgot you were dating
Another way to look at is that, for an atheist, the way one encounters religion most often is when people are using it as an excuse to legislate stupid bullshit. And, given that this is an English language board, that means some form of Christianity (or, in some places, Islam).
sure, i get that, but in that case
stop the faffing about
if you want to pick a fight with Mormons over prop 8
do that
stop using "religion" to say "Christianity"
if your primary experience is with one religion and you know a great deal about it and it infuriates you the way that religion gets bludgeoned about in your society to do stupid bullshit, it's okay to be opinionated and even angry about it
but don't lose perspective
and when people call you out on it, don't pull a No True Scotsman to exclude them from your faffing about
then act surprised when they're more than a little insulted by your ignorance and manipulation of the truth
(the general "you" in this post, not you specifically of course)
Yeah, I totally agree with what you are saying here. I just have a great deal of ... I guess you could call it sympathy for Quingu.
well are you an atheist dude who feels jerked around by jackhole Christians?
because if so i can get where you sympathize with him
otherwise man what is your angle
I am indeed an Atheist dude very, very worried about the (as I see it) extremely negative influence of religion on the legal system of my country. And, as it so happens, it is all coming from a number of different sects who use the same name and are, from an outsiders point of view, easy to confuse with one another.
Also, Quingu has made the effort to actually learn a good deal about a subject which I also find fascinating and have spent a lot of time and effort learning about over the last couple years: biblical history.
It is an interesting subject. And a very current one! People often don't realize how much genuinely new information relevant to the subject has been discovered in the last 75-100 years. Hell, 150 years ago no-one could even reliably read ancient Egyptian and "history" in the West went back as far as the iron age greeks + the bible. The whole idea of archeology as a science, rather than as a means of extracting gold from the ground, dates back to maybe post WW1 at best!
Translational sciences have made leaps and bounds over the same period. The deciphering of Akkadian and other ancient semitic languages (not to mention non semeitic ones like that of Sumer) has pushed back the boundary of what separates "history" from "myth" over two thousand years. And all of that just barely got started in the 1930s.
Just to pull a random example, what the Greeks working in Ptolemaic Egypt translated from the Tanakh as "god most high" we now know actually reads "god, the one of the mountain". Little details adding on to other little details. Less than 50 years ago an altar was found in Sina dedicated to Yahweh (the god of Judaism / Christianity etc...) and Mrs. Yahweh.
Carbon dating was invented in the late 1940s. There are people still alive today who remember the discovery of The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Nag Hamadi library.
The use of "atheism" to mean "physicalism" or "skepticism," depending on the time of day and the use of "religion" to mean "theism" are a couple of the thorns in my side regarding popular atheism right now.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.
The other day I was thinking about how long it's been since I killed you in a Phalla :P
Man, i try every damn time to kill you. But I'm always a vanillager and i'm no good at organizing a wagon again you.
I will never forget though
How's Kansas?
Flat?
Haha. What's funny is that it's never something I have intentionally done. I mean the first time I was just picking a random target or something, and then there was a time or two after that where someone would be like "Alright Nocturne, we need you to take out LoserForHire tonight" and I was all like "He's gonna be so maaaad..." :P
I don't have any real grudges, but they're fun to pretend to have and joke about.
And believe it or not, only about 2/3 or so of Kansas is really flat. We have the flint hills in the East, where I live, and then more hills as you approach Colorado and the rockies.
But aside from that, there's fucking nothing as far as the eye can see.

It is such new and interesting field.
i share both your concerns about the disturbingly theocratic direction of the american legal and political system
and your boner for archeology
as well as you being dismayed how many people are not aware how drastic our knowledge of history changed in the last century

technically speaking i can also be defined as atheist, so there's that kinda!

feral i am shooting you a hi5 right now
as a non-theistic religious dude this sticks in my craw pretty hard
i'd kinda appreciate in the future you jump on my nuts a little less over it, since you seem able to cognitively recognize that it's something that causes a flinch in you
not every conversation is some crusade for The Truth where you have to stalwartly defend the helpless sheep from the manipulative Pony with his mean words
give me a little slack, is what i am asking
your call, in the end
As a general rule, when I think something is wrong, I don't ignore it. If you don't like it, you can stop doing wrong things. As a bonus, you will vastly improve your communication ability and come off better as a whole. May as well tell you to stop railing against people who wear cat ears to a funeral.
which is possible, except that isn't what the duder says, man
he seriously was like "that's not a religion, you aren't religious, and your participation in this conversation is disingenuous"
that's a little different than "listen when I say Religion i mean the ones that are relevant to the place i live in. your's is largely unknown and inoffensive to me and i don't have to deal with it so i don't really care, so understand when i am saying Religion i am not trying to include you, i am just being generic with something that bothers me, so try not to get offended because i am not trying to offend you"
no, instead it's
"no, you are not what you say you are, you are deceptive, get away from my conversation and definitions"
little annoying
Some people like to differentiate between religion and spirituality. I tend to, as well, but I'm relatively comfortable with shifting vocabularies for the sake of communication. In the context of this conversation, though, I find your concern with the shitty way he uses language to be amusing.
Hey, ProfMoriarty, when I complain about you not being the real Moriarty, you should know that I'm not doing it to hate on you (well, not all that much, anyhow); I'm just fucking around.
Moriarty and I hung out a couple times IRL, and we hit it off really well. I haven't seen him in a few years, but we still talk online quite a bit (even though he is justifiably banned). The dude is hella cool, so don't think I'm trying to be insulting by comparing you unfavorably to him; I would compare pretty much everyone unfavorably to him.
did you stop dating because she forgot you were dating
I stopped dating her because she flaked out on visiting me for the holidays, which would have cost her zero dollars and would have required nothing but her time. I would have paid for her to have her own hotel room if it would have made her more comfortable.
She instead chose to stay home alone in a boring, unpleasant area with her irritating mother, where she complained about boredom.
So now there is a new girl. She is punctual and has excellent attendance!

pretty funny, considering what a thing you make of people forcing their will on others, champ

yeah, that'd be because in your Black And White World, you don't see any difference between the two

I tend to call the aspect of religion that I dislike "mysticism", but it has come to my attention that this too has a very specific meaning and that I should not use it to describe superstition, belief in astrology, and "I SAW AN ANGEL!!!" type stuff.
I guess it means becoming one with the divine through complete and total faith, which obviously is not the same.

Pony I have not been following this debate, but I just want to say that I would find you a much more likeable person if you were less snarky. Like just skimming and reading the last couple of lines there. Was that really necessary?
To be fair, I don't dislike you either. I am glad that you post here. I'm just saying snarkiness of that magnitude is something that gets to me no matter who is doing it.
