    you mean order doesn't matter.

if the order of the numbers doesn't matter than 321 and 123 are identical because the both contain the numbers 1,2 and 3.
    You're right.

But isn't the formula correct? I'm no expert - this is just something I came up with while bored a while ago and you sound like you no more about this than me.

    Unique pairs: n(n-1)/2

    Unique triples: n(n-1)(n-2)/6

    Unique sets of four: n(n-1)(n-2)(n-3)/24

thats true but theyre all derivatives of the overall formula n!/(r!(n-r)!)

    because n! is n(n-1)(n-2)(n-3)... etc.

    and r!(n-r)! for r=2 is 2*(n-2)!
    and r!(n-r)! for r=3 is 3*2*(n-3)!

you essentially can resolve the generic formula into however many numbers you want simply by adding an (n-x) term to the numerator and multiplying your divisor by r.

    Hmmm.
Sell me on Michael Clayton. I thought Tilda Swinton was wonderful but I felt like I'd seen the movie before.

Well, it's a smart, good-looking film with fine performances from a really, really great cast (Pollack, Wilkinson, Swinton, Clooney - and hey, it's the Greek from the Wire) all striking sparks off each other, a great, grown-up script, one really horribly poignant scene...

    Big spoiler.
The long single take where Wilkinson bites the dust was heartbreaking and brilliant.

...a nice use of mixing up scenes in time to give later stuff added oomph, and most of all, I had no clue what was going to happen as the film progressed. Which is pretty damn rare these days.
