APB, or All Points Bulletin is an MMO designed by David Jones, the dude behind the original Grand Theft Auto and Crackdown. I'm lazy so you get the Wikipedia entry description:
The game takes place in a modern-day, fictional city of San Paro where there is a constant battle between "Enforcers" and "Criminals", and the player will need to decide to which Faction they want to belong. The two sides battle out for control of the city, with territory within the city being contested continually 24 hours a day, so that players must concern themselves with both offensive and defensive moves.
Other activities involving missions within the game allowing the player to earn extra money, which then can be used to upgrade weapons, vehicles, and their character appearances, all that influence the game itself. For example, several Criminal players may rob a convenience store within the game; the game will then seek out one or more Law Enforcement players of equivalent skills and other criteria, and will issue an all-points bulletin for them to stop the robbery.
APB also claims it will be the first Massively multiplayer online game title where the player's skill determines the character's progression, as opposed to the normal model of time investment.
At GDC 2009 it was announced that Vivox would be providing voice chat for the game, the software allows players to customize the voice of their characters with voice fronts, and also to communicate using 3D positional audio.
This SOUNDS cool, right? But what does it look like?
Okay, that looks cool. But what's the character customization like? Will I be able to buy haircuts for some gold at a barber shop?
(I don't know the answer to that second question.)
Yeah, ridic, right?
So how do I get into this beta? Well, there is one way that I know of, and since the Beta is on Sunday you don't have a lot of time. Eurogamer gave out thousands of keys, but that well went dry quickly.
Right now you can go to
Realtime Worlds' website and apply for the beta. I have absolutely no knowledge of how likely it is you'll get in, but hey, what's it hurt?
HERE IS A LIST OF PEOPLE THAT ARE IN THE BETA, LET'S START A GANG (GANG COLORS WILL BE RAINBOW):
Sara Lynn
Orikae
Smart Hero
Shabooty
Beef Avenger
Senor Tacos

edit: Beef avenger has the right idea.
What spring does with the cherry trees.
still in affect?
im pretty sure everyone saw this coming
I didn't read anything about it. I dunno if it's an open beta, either, I was reading reports that you only get a couple hours of gametime or something. Maybe someone can clear it up for me.
why do you think I'm looking forward to arresting them as myself, a short, afro'd filipino wearing a hawaiian shirt?
No posting video or screenshots or going into detail about gameplay
I mean open as we get to play for more than a couple of hours or whatever.
with a goatee (all gangsters need goatees. This game is an elaborate facial hair simulator)

It's like Tattoo and Magnum PI had a gay lovechild.
Also I am in the NA beta.
e: Yeah, you guys are in the European beta.
There is still an NDA in full effect. You pretty much can't talk about anything.
i've heard it's only sunday afternoon
There's no release date.
It's still very much in closed beta.
Did you guys get your keys from Eurogamer or fileplanet or something?
I got mine from Eurogamer.
Looks like the this Sundays playtest will be for 4 hours, 17.00 - 21.00 GMT. I'll be at work, DERP DERP.
Sure there'll be other ones in the future.
countdown to banned starts now

OK. Yeah, you guys are all in the European beta then.
Dammit. I thought I'd have some SE people to play with.
Played it in Boston and I was very very bad at it. However, I did find 4 bugs in 15 minutes of playtime. I found the play to be...meh, at best. Driving was kinda crap as well as a few other things, but we'll see. They still have time to make it not suck.
but I'm like absolutely sure I will just spend all day in the character customization part of the game
I'm kinda happy that I'm in the beta, but I feel that the beta will be good enough proof that I won't pay up for this. Time will tell, I suppose.
Or I would be if the installer didn't crap out on me every time I try to install the damn thing.
yeah this is pretty much how i feel too. Keeping my expectations real low until shown otherwise

If you go to the folder that the launcher sits in, there are two folders, one that has a bunch of numbers in it and one that doesn't. copy the files from the number folder into the not-number folder, overwriting files(back them up first.)
voila. it works. now all may pay tribute to me
i'm unsure how this makes me feel
