There was one part near the end of The Beast Below that I didn't understand, and I think I'm missing something obvious.

He gestures at the TARDIS as he says this - I'm almost positive he's referring to running away from Gallifrey with a stolen time machine.

After watching the first two episodes of the new run (so gooooood), I think I've fallen in love with Who again. Is it worth catching up on Tennant's run? (Last episode I saw was the Satan Pit.)
Episodes you absolutely have to watch:
    • The Runaway Bride
    • Smith & Jones
    • Human Nature / Family of Blood
    • Blink
    • Utopia / The Sound of Drums / Last of the Time Lords
    • Time Crash
    • Partners in Crime
    • Fires of Pompeii
    • Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead
    • Midnight
    • [strike]The Great Russell T Davies Fanwank Bonanza[/strike] The Stolen Earth / Journey's End [Not great, but worth watching for the last fifteen minutes alone]
    • The Next Doctor
    • The Waters of Mars
    • The End of Time Parts I and II
I would add The Unicorn and the Wasp to the list, because it was just so much fun. Great, lighthearted, let's all have a few laughs fun. That's something that is really, really missing from a lot of New Who, I think. Partners in Crime had it, and The Unicorn and the Wasp had it, but that's really all I can think of.

Oh, and the one with Rose and the skin lady at the hospital full of cats. That was fun, too.

Wait, people are anticipating Gatiss? What has he written for that to be good? isn't he just the guy that did that awful one, the lazarus experiment?

  • JacobkoshJacobkosh Gamble a stamp! I can show you how to be a real man!Super Moderator, Moderator mod
Gatiss starred in The Lazarus Experiment; he didn't write it. He did write The Unquiet Dead in season one, which I liked a lot, and The Idiot's Lantern in s2, which I didn't like as much but had some great bits.

  • BogartBogart Registered User regular
The Unquiet Dead was a really good episode. After an uneven start with Rose (which sold me on Billie Piper but not on the writing), and The End of the World (looked pretty, wasn't so great), The Unquiet Dead was a tightly written piece of TV family entertainment the likes of which hadn't been seen for years.

The End of the World had a silly-ish main plot but I absolutely loved all the incidental stuff - Rose's culture shock, her fight with the Doctor, all of that. It's what really sold me on Eccleston's Doctor.

  • SilkyNumNutsSilkyNumNuts Registered User regular
Ooh I should have looked better at the imdb page. Unquiet dead was a good episode, but I was pretty unimpressed with idiot's lantern.

Though I still sometimes say hungry in her voice when I'm wanting food.

Riversong in 2 episodes time though, if imdb is to be believed.

I like the new doctor, he's a dick, it really works.

  • BogartBogart Registered User regular
I do remember one moment in The End of the World I loved: the bit where her prospective beau faints and Eccleston deadpans "That's your boyfriend, that is".

Between the Master turning into a retarded comic-book villain, yet more sloppy 'THEY'RE ALL GONE...THEY'RE ALL BACK...THEY'RE ALL GONE...' writing with the Time Lords, the general pervading feeling that RTD genuinely didn't want for his beloved character to die and that he was the most precious and special Doctor of them all (he survives more in that episode than have killed most of the other Doctors at one time or another), and the ridiculous 15-minute tour of RTD's era between dying and regenerating...

It's worth watching if only because it's a regeneration story. But that's it.

  • JacobkoshJacobkosh Gamble a stamp! I can show you how to be a real man!Super Moderator, Moderator mod
Fans psychoanalyzing RTD will never, ever get old

because it already got old once, died, and regenerated

Can we use standard spoiler rules in here please? Most of the info hiding in spoilers is just from the last aired episode, which is fine to discuss openly in TV series threads.

That makes sense for US stuff, which the majority of people here have seen, but for UK stuff it does seem a little harsh.

I'm not speaking for myself here - I've seen them all. I just know that I'm up-to-date so I can click away at any spoilers.

Ah, okay. So long as there is some vague logic in place.

I do declare that the title/OP should be updated to keep track of what needs tagging.

Woah, woah. The master three parter at the end of season 3 is amazing.

it's the jesus doctor moment that ruins it, but the two and 3/4th episodes before that?

    Fucking amazing.
