There was one part near the end of The Beast Below that I didn't understand, and I think I'm missing something obvious.

Amy asks the Doctor if he's ever run away from something, and he says once, long ago. And she asks what happened, and he pauses and then sheepishly says "hello".

the choice he gives Amy when Mandy runs away. He says something like "It's [following Mandy and finding out about the Smilers] or Ledworth"? And I'm not even sure about the Ledworth bit. Maybe it's legwork? Even then, so confused; what legwork would Amy be doing?

Oh, and the one with Rose and the skin lady at the hospital full of cats. That was fun, too.

Gatiss starred in The Lazarus Experiment; he didn't write it. He did write The Unquiet Dead in season one, which I liked a lot, and The Idiot's Lantern in s2, which I didn't like as much but had some great bits.

The Unquiet Dead was a really good episode. After an uneven start with Rose (which sold me on Billie Piper but not on the writing), and The End of the World (looked pretty, wasn't so great), The Unquiet Dead was a tightly written piece of TV family entertainment the likes of which hadn't been seen for years.

Anywho, I have an amusing bit of speculation for episode 3.

The "ironsides" are truly loyal to Britain and all that, but the Doctor's distrust and accusations jog their memories and then they revert to true Daleks.

I enjoyed this episode, but

it felt like the plot kinda got away from itself. After the star whale reveal, the people in charge were portrayed as well-meaning people who were just doing what was necessary to survive. But it wasn't necessary to set up a police state, sentence children to death or imprisonment or whatever for failing exams, and murder everyone who hit the protest button. And there's no indication that anything but that last one is going to change. It felt like they just swept all that under the table so they could focus on the star whale.

It would've made more sense to me if the society had been portrayed as happy and utopian, which would've made the dichotomy that it was all dependent on nonstop torture of a sentient being more compelling.

Between the Master turning into a retarded comic-book villain, yet more sloppy 'THEY'RE ALL GONE...THEY'RE ALL BACK...THEY'RE ALL GONE...' writing with the Time Lords, the general pervading feeling that RTD genuinely didn't want for his beloved character to die and that he was the most precious and special Doctor of them all (he survives more in that episode than have killed most of the other Doctors at one time or another), and the ridiculous 15-minute tour of RTD's era between dying and regenerating...

It's worth watching if only because it's a regeneration story. But that's it.

That makes sense for US stuff, which the majority of people here have seen, but for UK stuff it does seem a little harsh.
