Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

    How'd I do?

    Not well, dude.

You signed up for the first time today on this forum and post an advertisement for yourself.

    That's pretty sleazy.

Try to be an individual next time and come up with something a bit more ingenious and original.

    Sitewhore.

By the way, gang. Check out this site for all your Call of Cthulhu tchotchke needs.

    A)
Hardcore: Amount of time spent gaming doesn't matter, but they spend lots of time looking into gaming-related things that aren't playing games themselves. I.E. spending time on gaming forums, doing research on the tech behind games, reading about the people who make games, etc.

Casual: Again, time doesn't matter, but these people are less informed about games in general and often are suckered in by misleading advertising, are very loyal to brand names, and don't venture into new territories with regard to genres. The stereotypical "sports gamer" can sometimes fall into this category.

    B)
Hardcore: This type of gamer is often very competitive and doesn't branch out much from their favorite genres, which usually include either FPS games, sports games, or RPGs. In terms of PC gaming, this is often the guy that will shell out hundreds to keep their rig top of the line and will be eagerly spouting off about the absurd number of triscuits that their graffix card can progress. F4t4l1ty or whatever the fuck his name is probably this kind of hardcore gamer.

Casual: This is the person that games for fun and will branch out into different genres if they look interesting enough. This person might spend a lot of money on gaming, but it's usually more for the sake of variety.
I agree with the first part but the second part seems backwards. I wouldn't call someone who plays only one game a hardcore gamer. I think a true gamer is just looking for the best experience in as many genres as possible. I see the hardcore gamer as a kind of connoisseur.

Also, my mind filters out un-ironic 1337-speak automatically. It's like adblock. I had to look closely several times before I even saw what the OP was about.

I think most of the hardcore vs. casual gaming arguments around here arise from the fact that definition A seems to be pretty well accepted around here, but B is what I see most often used in games journalism (and often, in industry interviews).

I'm not saying you're wrong, just that different people have different definitions.

So, there's a video of Kurt Cobain in [Guitar Hero 5] out. I feel dirty watching this, he just looks wrong.

Well Cobain's mo-cap session was completely useless, so you can't blame them.

    Hahaha

Oh my God that is horrible.

    It's insulting at best.

You have to understand that when we "hardcore gamers" say things like "pwnd noobz" we are being sarcastic. We don't actually walk around talking like that.

If you want to know how to get in touch with us, look at the front page of Penny-Arcade.com and have a look at the way Tycho writes.

OR, you know, you could have a marketing scheme that consists of O? O! O? O! O? O! SOI SOI SOI! and have a bunch of Kelets dancing in the background.

what the hell is with today. First that chat thread about revolve, that i apparently managed to get locked by saying the same thing as anyone else, and now this which just doesn't make a lick of sense..

    i'm frightened.

Also, marketing dude, less patronising and more plain english, it'll get you much further.
