Cosplay at Pax (SOLVED)

flowerhoneyflowerhoney Registered User regular
edited April 2010 in Help / Advice Forum
Okay Esh did this, so I figure I can do it too

For Pax Prime (2010 baby!) I would really like to cosplay, because dressing up is fun!
The problem is, I have almost zero sewing abilities.
I also have really dark hair, so dying it would require bleaching, which I'm pretty sure is bad for my hair... and I don't want to hurt it
I also personally believe that I am too flat to be most super-heroines

What I look like:
72261242776071128128113.jpg

So, I'm basically looking for a cosplay character with dark brown hair and relatively simple/doable outfit
Help would be 100% appreciated! :D

EDIT: okay I guess I need to throw out some characters I would like to do but am hesitant to try
- Zatanna
- Sakura from Street Fighter
- Akira from Lucky Channel
- Battle Angel Alita
- Heather from Silent Hill 3
- Cibo from Blame!
- Catwoman
- Bad Girl from No More Heroes

This list is subject to growth

You should probably tack a caveat of some sort onto that. o_O

If you don't mind spending money

    Might work for you.

    *shrug*

The real point is to get a good looking costume. Also don't rule out a decent wig.

Also, Cosplay as someone you like or want to pretend to be. It will be easier to get into character that way.

Give us a list of some of those that you want to do that you don't think you can do - either we'll be able to figure out how you could do some of them, or it'll give a better idea of other characters that would be a good fit with a similar style.

Female cosplay character... dark hair... flat chested...

    I've got it.

Get a piece of cardboard, fold it into a pyramid shape, and tape it to your chest.

And go as 1996 Lara Croft

When we went to PAX East, my friend's wife was Link. She has done this a number of times and has dark hair like yours (yours seems a bit longer.)
Anyway, she just tucks it under a wig. And I think she just picks up wigs from Party City and cuts them.

Flatness is easily conquered by a set of padding. Hair dye is not that damaging, unless you do it repeatedly.

Just pick a character that you love and rock that shit.

*also note that cosplay at PAX is... well, not unpopular, per se. But it's not a common thing... however, nobody is going to think twice if you dress up. It's all about us being us, and outfit be damned.

    Some random ideas:

    Zoey - Left4Dead

    zoey-l4dsm.jpg

As an alternative to the witch...She's likely the easiest of this group (unless you get very exact). Basically a pink/red jacket, jeans, tennis shoes and a ponytail.

Alyx Vance - Half Life 2

    alyx-hl2sm.jpg

Quite a few layers, but most things there are standard.

    Aeris/Aerith Gainsborough - Final Fantasy 7

    aeris-ff7sm.jpg

Boots + Pink Dress + Red Half-coat ...thing (+ bangles + fancy hair + optional flower basket).

Cate Archer - No One Lives Forever

    catearcher-nolfsm.jpg

Her outfit varies quite a bit; you could probably just throw weird 70s stuff together and try to match the haircut and pull it off (although NOLF is a bit niche and people may mistake you for random 70s person).

Claire Redfield - Resident Evil 2

    claire-re2sm.jpg

The weird cut off 'underwear on the outside' look may be difficult - same with the knife. Her jacket also has a specific design on the back but you can gloss over that or just be 'post-Sherry Claire' without the jacket.

Rinoa Heartilly - Final Fantasy 8

    rinoa-ff8sm.jpg

She's got like three layered dresses and weird sleeves going on. Plus I think she walks around in high heels all the time.

Being a person who likes comfortable costumes, I'd suggest Makoto, since karate gis tend to be wickedly comfy to move around in.

could I dye my hair just for the sake of trying out a color? Washable hair dye hasn't much effect on my hair in the past

these ideas are all awesome, btw <3

I could see Bad Girl for you if you got a long blond wig to wear. Then its just a matter of finding the outfit and a sweet baseball bat.

I was reading somewhere in a PAX FAQ that anything resembling a weapon is not a good idea to bring. It's why I scuttled my Gideon costume.

Most of the board anime fans love Baccano, so you'd probably be recognized if you went as Ennis

In the FAQ it says you cant have projectiles or anything that resembles a real weapon.
I dont know if a baseball bat resembles a real weapon... I just figured I would peace bond it, or a foam kids bat

I like Jade from Beyond Good and Evil in theory. It's a comfy and functional outfit. That disk thingie could be a purse.

    But...

    1) She would have to cut her pretty hair for the full Jade effect.

    2) No one looks good in green lipstick and eyeshadow.

You guys have been super helpful, but I think I'm going to have to go with 1996 Lara Croft.

I've been thinking about it, and its just so hilarious and awesome

Hope to see you all in PAX with great costumes of your own! (or, on the flip side, totally normal outfits.)

    thanks!
