I would bother playing mask of the betrayer if it wasn't the worst game I've ever played. I heard the story isn't bad. Maybe they should just put out a novelization or something.

Just installed BG Tutu, going to do a full run-through if I have enough patience. I will be playing with two main characters. One is set as a half-orc berserker, but I am kind of up in the air about the second one. It will either be a blade, or a sorcerer, or possibly a kensai dual-classing into sorcerer. Does anyone know if sorcerers actually use charisma or if they have intelligence as their casting stat like everybody else?

You can't dual-class to a sorcerer, unfortunately. Dual-class to mage is your only option there (though if you have ToB, fighter/mage multi is vastly superior). Sorcerers don't use anything for their casting stat in BG (yes, they should use charisma, but they don't). You'll want high wisdom to make good use of the wish spell if you go that route. Any of the classes you mentioned will be absurdly powerful in the higher levels so just go with whatever sounds fun.

Edit: also, berserker dual to mage is arguably better than kensai dual to mage. Kensai are vastly overrated. Also, consider berserker dual to cleric for your other character. Very powerful.

How exactly do multiple PCs in single player work? Do they all have to die to get the instant game over? Do romances assume first created as main, or are they deactivated? Can one PC leave your party? Etc.

The first character created in the multiplayer game is the PC. The other player-created characters are just silent, player-created NPCs, basically.

Aw, so no making a party full of mute supermonsters who would all have to be wiped out to end game. Oh well. Thanks!

Sorry to interrupt the current conversation.

I have always started the BG series but always stopped after Beregost. I could just never continue. (I am easily distracted by the new shiny.)

After reading this thread I decided that I would try again. I reinstalled according to the directions earlier in the thread. (thank you). I started my Elf Ranger, (ORIGINAL) and set out from Candlekeep. I had my first encounter with a dire wolf. Great! This is the wolf that slays many adventurers on their journey. Iomen and I readied our bows. Thwap-thwap. Wolf down. Hmmmnn.... that seemed easy.

Lets go to the Friendly Arm (?). AHHHH GIBBERLINGS. Thwap-thwap-THWAP! One shot them all. Ok something is wrong. Where is the brutal difficulty? Why am I not dying. I know ranged is supposed to be good, but THIS.

Well lets check how much longer to I level up? Whats this?

I AM LEVEL SEVEN. No wonder things drop before my handsome visage.

Apperently this has something to do with EasyTuTu, and using the BGII engine. You start at seven in BG II.

My question oh mighty internetz..... is there any easy fix to this? Am I going to have to use an editor to set my level at ONE? Being seven is fun and all, but it defeats why I play these games in the first place.

    THANKS

Hmmmnn. I installed everything directly as listed in this thread. I have installed easytutu before so don't know what I screwed up this time. Is there a way of fixing this without doing a complete reinstall? (only take like an hour but still)

i doubt it, its one of the annoying things about infinity engine mods, 99% of the time it requires a full reinstall otherwise there an untold number of fuck ups somewhere down the road.

wont work, you've still got to mess around with all the other bonuses etc and will just mess the game up as your level up from one again.

I have started to get going with my Baldurs Gate 1 game, but I have hit upon a small snag. I just replaced Imoen with Safana, another human rogue, but she is really crap. Her weapon skill points are put into daggers and darts, and that I could live with, but she also apparently rolled a three on her hit point roll when she levelled up so she is a level 2 rogue with 9 hit points which I can't live with. I seem to recall that there was a good savegame editor that also allowed you to change your party members kits which would be very welcome. Anyone know what I am talking about?

So if I install directly like Drez mentioned at the beginning is there anything else this is necessary? (Someone mentioned bugfixes... not just the official patches?) And then if so what order?

So for a first time player of BG series.... I like mages in general. Magic, magicians. Theres a mage and a summoner in this right? THose are the two big magic classes? If those are the only 2, which would be better for the person who likes magic? If WoW helps, I was glad I picked a warlock over mage coming in before the first exp. I'm a big magic guy though...... The only thing I remember from BG is start mage, die, die, die, die, die, die *Sigh* wish I would have pirated this bitch....... I know its a fantastic game, and I didn't know it at the time, but the start is rough! Kinda reminds me of the DnD game on genesis.

There's a Mage and a Sorcerer class that operate differently at the spell level, but generally have access to all the spells.

That includes summoning legions of bloodthirsty critters right up to HOLY FUCK DID I JUST SUMMON A 9FT 500LB ANGEL FROM OUT OF NOWHERE TO START WRECKING SHIT ALL OVER THE MAP I BELIEVE I JUST DID.

"I shall prevail!" Much love, Planetar.

Mages and Sorcerers, as you'd expect, start out complete wimps and end up as keyboard-smashing godlike creatures of vast destruction once you get some levels under your belt. Breathing dragons fire? We got that. Decaying the flesh off of living bones in an entire room? Check. Immunity to pretty much any type of attack the game can throw at you? Heh, naturally.

Now excuse me, I'm going to make this dragon say please while I shove this comet straight up its arse.

Addendum: If Tutu will let, I swear I will play through the entirely series as a monk. Because I hate myself that much.

It's going to be torture until you get near the endgame. I hope you like reloading due to having no armor on a melee character that only does 1-8 damage per hit for most of the game.

I like a challenge. I expect this to make Insanity Engineer in ME2 look like a walk in a park. I play on Core Rules setting all the time anyway, and I'm gosh-darn sick of being a Half-Elf Ranger/Cleric. Even though the class is boss, it just bores me when you get to the stage of steamrolling juggernaut. And Thief/Mage is out of the equation too since there's a bucketload of them and it'd mean no need to take Jan, which in itself should be a crime.

I just found that in my new BG1 run through that the freedom of movement buff from the Spiderbane sword (a very good 2H sword) cancels out the fast running on Boots of Speed.

My main character is a 2H specialist.

Needless to say I am upset.

I think you can circumvent this by equipping the sword first and then equipping the boots, though I'm not positive.

So I tried using gatekeeper to undo the horrible handicaps I have inadvertently laid upon my BG2 character, however it says there is a 'record length disagreement' that will corrupt my saves, presumably if I save the edits. What is this and how do I fix it? I used the unofficial patch and text pack if that makes any difference.

Yeah, went with a Wild Mage instead, because I always wanted one. I might have accidentally blown up Montaron and Xzar with a wild surge fireball. Oh, and at one point I held a choke-point with an army of squirrels.

Damn, Sleep is freaking OP in the opening stages. "Oh hey twelve Gnolls - BAM! Now ten of you are drooling on the floor." Should've named my Wild Mage Sandman.

I have TuTu and The widescreen mod installed, and something is up with my graphics in TuTU. During character creation its split into three. Left, black box, middle, black box, right. in game its like the screen is shifted up left from where its supposed to be. ANy Ideas?

Just as a note, during the video adjustments, the test page, the furthest edge 2 inches on both sides are black. Guessing something to do with that.
Its actually unplayable. Anytime dialog pops up, and I'm guessing dialog options, you cant see anything. Thers part of a box that flickers in the bottom right.

So, is there any advantage to specilizing as a mage? And INT is the only stat a Mage is worried about, probably with Cons for life and Dex for random evaids. As WIS, STR, and really Charisma serve little purpose, What sells are some of the best to start out with? And why when you specilize do the spells you pick orange border instead of green?

Specializing lets you pick one extra spell to memorize per level but prevents you from learning spells from the opposing school. Conjuration is a decent specialization, though you lose out on True Sight. Honestly, Sorcerers and Wild Mages are so far superior to a normal mage that you should really consider them. Mages like intelligence for learning spells, wisdom for doing well with wish, and then whatever else you like. Don't raise constitution over 16 as mages get no benefit from it.

As far as good spells, if you're a mage, it hardly matters what you pick, as you'll get most of them through scrolls anyway. But here are a few staples: Magic Missile, Identify, Blur, Mirror Image, Invisibility, Melf's Acid Arrow, Melf's Minute Meteors, Fireball, Flame Arrow, Web, Haste, Stoneskin, Improved Invisibility. That should get you going for the early levels.

I used to get the same flickering like that on XP. I'm pretty sure I resolved it by turning 3D acceleration either on or off, whatever it wasn't at before. And if it wasn't that well..it was definitely something I flipped in the graphics config that fixed it.

And yeah, at least 18 INT to start with for a mage, and a high WIS for wish though it isn't a requirement. After the genie is summoned you can actually get another character (with high WIS) to talk to him first and ask for the wish. CON up to 14/16 will help keep em alive and other than that..well you can take some STR for carry weight (10 or less STR does annoy me when it comes to carrying stuff) or some DEX to improve their terrible AC. I wouldn't choose DEX personally though, there are some good low level spells to improve a Mage's AC.

I've always considered Divination spells largely useless so when I specialise I choose the one that blocks Divination spells, otherwise pick wild mage. Sorcerors are awesome but if you haven't played before a mage is probably better since you won't know the best picks for a sorceror's limited spell pool.

flickering is caused by opengl triple buffering, turn that shit off, you don't need to mess around with 3d accelerator settings.

or just play the game in software mode but the spells wont look that pretty.

I havn't gotten any flickering, as in actual on off, in out type flickering that I know of.... actually, in game... some of that could be considered flickering. Turned off 3d acceleration and trying it again. That didn't work. Turned off 3d all together, that didn't work. I can't pick the resolution in game that I set for the wide screen mod, so maybe its that. Gonna try full screen instead of windowed, and 800X600 before rerunning the widescreen mod.
