When my son was learning to crawl he got into my computer room, hit the eject button on my DVD-ROM drive, and ended up scratching the hell out of my BG II disc 2. I tried to reinstall it the other day but it doesn't work.

    This is a disturbing development.

You need to save some of those Andraste's ashes for the disc then.

I would give up a kidney for a proper BG sequel, even using the dated graphics and top-down perspective.

I would give up my kidney to prevent a Baldurs Gate sequel since there's no story left to tell there.

Now, a game with atmosphere plot and voice acting on par with Baldurs Gate that I could get behind.

I finally got my 4-1 last night and installed it all according to Drez' exellent instructions and just created my first character (a dwarven barbarian, even managed to get 18/98 strength). I don't care that it looks dated, am already loving the slightly retro feel and the almost friendly interface. Having some trouble with the complete lack of manuals so don't know how to use the quick slots yet, but I'm sure that'll iron itself out quickly enough.

I do want to know if I'm ok to approach this as an AD&D adventure or are there specific game mechanics that I need to lok out for? I fear I may have screwed my character by giving him two specisalisations in axe (in addition to two-hand and sling for distanc), should I have spread these weapon talents more widely or is it better to specialise in one weapon?

Okay you're starting with BG1, the spoiler tag just hides BG2 related comments. In BG1 give anyone that can a point in bow proficiency. But just treat it like an adventure, you can't go far wrong if you allocated your character's stats correctly. It isn't hard to figure out what spells are most useful or whatever (hmm render an opponent immobile and helpless? I guess sleep is pretty useful!).

Just don't get disheartened, BG is a hard game, and the first especially so because you can and will die so quickly. A lot of ranged firepower is helpful.
Sling? psht, you don't need ranged when you can hit things in the face with a big hammer. 2 handed spec is obviously good if you're going with 2 handers, personally I think greatswords will serve you better than 2 handed axes.

Really though, approach it as an adventure, the only way you could really screw your character is with poor stat allocations at the start of the game and even then it tells you the most important stats for each class. Sure we could tell you to put points in X spec because of that awesome weapon you could get later, but the game is full of weapons of all different types so you'll never not have something to use.

All I would say is, pick a style and stick with it, most characters (non-fighters especially) won't get enough proficiency points to be particularly versatile, better to pick sword/board, DW, 2 handed, missile or whatever and just stick with it. Stick with just two weapon types as well, you'll never go wrong with any type of sword.

The worst weapon type is probably polearms/spears/halberds, there are hardly any and of those few are particularly special. Flails are worth taking on one character because Flail of Ages +3/+5 is awesome and can be aquired as soon as chapter 2 starts.

    Re: Weapon choices for BG2:
If you really are dying to have a sword, go with either short swords, or long swords. There are a criminally small number of good, magical bastard swords and katanas in BG2, but when you hit ToB they up the ante considerably. And to be fair, the +3 katana in SoA is really, really fucking good.

But yes, BG1 is a hard game. Really hard. See that wolf? Going to kill you. That Hobgoblin? Poisoned arrows that'll kill out after combat's ended. Kobolds? Nasty buggers. Even right up to the end on normal/core settings it's merciless.

envoy1, I'm glad my installation guide helped.

Just as an FYI - the EasyTutu folk recommend saving before you enter Beregost. Apparently there's a weird bug they haven't figured out yet that potentially corrupts saves while in Beregost. They recommend saving before you enter and then again after you leave. If you can successfully load the save after you leave, you're fine.

You should be able to save within Beregost too, just to be clear. Just make sure any saves you make after are not corrupt.

I believe this is true for every time you intend to enter Beregost.

That little triangle + line can go fuck itself in the head. I assume that's the one that relates to level drain.

I noticed my character was dying really easily...oh...he's level 1.

What do I have to do to fix this? Temple services?

Maces, for a very good reason. If you pick up the right mace, and upgrade it correctly as an Undead Hunter it will be glorious. Also two-handed swords are very good for any Paladin kit.

I was thinking Maces or 2HS actually.

Also, any recommendation on a non-cheesy stat setup? I want to give myself 18/00 and I thought I would just go ahead and alter my stats using Shadowkeeper so I don't sit there clicking REROLL a thousand times.

What's the max (total) die value you can have as a Paladin?

    Alsoer:

Does CHA or INT or WIS matter for dialogue in BG1/2 at all? I mean I know they matter for saves but I guess as an Undead Hunter I basically need CHA, STR, and WIS, and maybe CON but that the scores don't really matter much for dialogue options throughout the series? (Compared to say Planescape: Torment, where your scores matter very much.)

    A bit, yes. But...
At the start of BG2 there's a ring that sets your charisma to 18. If you're playing through BG1, there are also a total of three items that will permanently add +1 to your WIS, as well - and I honestly can't remember if WIS does affect conversations.

    CHA and INT definitely do.

Wisdom is important for Mages/Sorcerer's who intend to making frequent use of the Wish spell. Kinda irrelevant with your Undead Hunter though. It's also useful for some extra dialogue options in one or two conversations which I won't go into details here.

I started playing BG2 a week ago and rolled a bunch to get decent scores on my Inquisitor pally. These are what I ended up with.
    STR 18/87
    DEX 18
    CON 18
    INT 11
    WIS 13
    CHA 17

WIS 13 and CHA 17 were minimums.

I think the 2e roll was just 3d6 per stat, so a range of 3-18 prior to any racial bonus.

if you have tob wisdom is a sorcerers #1 stat, ironically int is the least important. it only affects spell learning, and sorcerers don't use scrolls to learn spells. Wisdom lets you do all kinds of good stuff with wish.

Man level drain. Because of that I always enable cheats so I can hit ctrl+r to restore my characters after fighting if they've been level drained.

There are some areas where you fight, cast restore, rest because restore makes them fatigued, then cast more restore because you probably don't have 3-6 memorised at once, rest again for the fatigue etc. I just crtl+r anyone drained and rest once.

Though I also usually end up using ctrl+j to teleport from one side of an area to the other in friendly cities because after multiple playthroughs I get too impatient at having to walk everywhere.

I want to do a full triology run now..though this will mean attempting to get all the mod stuff installed correctly which will be a pain. Hopefully Drez's instructions will work fine for me too.

I'm tempted to try a solo run but first, that would be suicide in BG1, and second I would probably get bored of just having the one character who will be level 20+ before the end of the chapter 2 in BG2. I think I might go with just a party of 4 and make them all myself. There are still so many class combos and kits I've never tried.

Yup had that. Had squirrels as well.

The funniest experience has to be when we were in a dungeon full of stone golems. They were pretty damn hard, so I figured the best tactic was to set up everyone to do spells, targets etc and get ready to fight them. So I set everything up, tell my guy to attempt to cast an area of effect spell on the golems, press unpause and the first thing my guy does is cast 4-in-a-row.

    SILENCE
    STUN
    BLIND

Speaking of which, I'm playing BG2 for the first time right now and I'd love to hear more of the spoken (non-text) banter you get when you're just walking around or in battle, but a lot of it is pretty quiet and Minsc always yells stupid shit all the time whenever I click on him or tell him to do something. Is there any way to turn off the voices that play when you tell a character to do something while keeping the banter voices, or to set their volume levels to be different? Or is there just one volume level for all spoken voices?

I hear that. Every time I finalise like, 5 members of my party (myself included) off the bat, hold the sixth spot open for random NPCs so I can always hear what they have to say and have a blast with them.

While this is obviously true, I've played through the games enough times to know most of the banter and such. I keep coming back for challenge runs basically.
