I think I'm gonna cry - September release for Japan? It's possible that we might see this before the 2007 holiday season. D:

Also, I just want to add that, yes, the 3D update looks like crap - BUT this is the direction I want Castlevania to go, basically. If they can pull off the gameplay like that, then a full-blown Castlevania release on a next-gen console using this 2.5D format is VERY likely.

I'm so excited for all of this!!!!!!!!

I might have to charge-up my PSP and dust it off!

  • Those 3D backgrounds are not worth $250 to me. Portable SotN and Black Canary are not worth $300 to me. I'll just have to "miss out" on this one.

So... I'll guess that Hudson's aspirations to get Rondo on Virtual Console were just stomped.

Between this and Portable Ops, I'll have to get a PSP eventually. Worse than the chance to finally play Rondo is the fact that I've secretly dreamed of a way to play Symphony anywhere I wanted for some time now. Bastards.

I will have to a) Find where the hell I left my PSP the last time I played it. and b) actually remove Valkarie Profile: Lenneth from it.

Am I the only person who is disappointed that this is not a new game? Eh. Oh well.

No you aren't, however, even if it isn't a brand-new game, I'm excited all the same. I've never played Rondo.

Wait, I'm not entirely clear. What games are in this?

Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo was originally released for the Turbo CD in 1993. Anyone who's played it knows it's one of the best platformers ever made. It is easily one of the best Castlevania games, on par with Castlevania: Dracula's Curse, Super Castlevania IV and the original masterpiece. It was "ported" to the SNES very poorly and this terrible iteration got released in the US and Europe in the mid-nineties.

Behold its true form and despair:

Dracula X in its true form is an awesome and relevant game. It is notable that a ton of the content used in Symphony of the Night (its direct sequel) and beyond is taken verbatim from this game without modification. The CD soundtrack has not often been topped by later Castlevania games.

It is now known that it is to be released on the PSP in Japan come September. It will have both the original game and a 3D remake a la Maverick Hunter X and Mega Man: Powered Up.

The 3D graphics look like ten kinds of ass compared to the original hand drawn masterwork but the inclusion of said original game makes it worth any price to obtain this game. I will be purchasing a PSP the day this game is available for it. If I have to import it because Konami either does not release it or the original 2D version of the game on a US release of it then so be it.

If the original game were EVER to come out in the US, this is the time. I pray to God it makes it here as I keep holding out on paying the ~$80~$200 the original often goes for online. It is easily piratable but I'm living a lie every time I call myself a lover of the Castlevania franchise yet continue such behavior.

This PSP release will also include a port of Casltevania: Symphony of the Night. Currently this game is only available on the PSX (same name) and the Sega Saturn (Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight).

which version of SotN do you think we'll get? the PS1 version or the Saturn's?

and I thought Nocturne in the Moonlight was just the Japanese name for SotN period, like how HoD is "Castlevania: Concerto of the Midnight Sun", AoS is "Castlevania: Minuet of Dawn", DoS is "Cross of the Blue Moon" and PoR is "Gallery of Labyrinth"

God, I want the saturn version SO HARD. I was hoping we would get it on XBLA but here is another chance (maybe)

  • bloodyroarxxbloodyroarxx Registered User regular
It'll be the PS1 version cause its an easy port, for saturn they would likley have to write an emulator and the saturn port has slowdown in some areas.

  • LCDXXLCDXX Registered User, ClubPA regular
I have to agree - I'm 99.9% positive it will be the PS1 version simply because it's so easy to emulate on the PSP hardware. But damn it'd be AWESOME to have Nocturne here in the U.S.

No way. I'm excited for a chance to (potentially, someday) play Rondo, but I'm still plenty sad.

Also, there's no way they'd go through the trouble of fixing all the kinks in the Saturn version (let alone port from it at all) when it's not even the primary focus. I'd like to play Nocturne if they ever decided to fix the load times and visual quirks, but I doubt they'll ever want to.

Nocturne definitely isn't feasible. And frankly it's not really worth it. It's cool to be able to play as Richter and Maria from the outset but Maria but there's NO new content added for them (no items/cutscenes/etc.) so there's not much point. The two new areas and new items are pretty cool but personally I don't think it's worth the trouble.

See? There's some stuff in it that, out of context is AWESOME. At the same time though the game has slowdown, more washed out graphics, no transparency effects (this semi-ugly dithering effect is used instead) and so on.

It's lost, there's no way they'll ever port it.

Well, the intro of the game shows Maria riding up to the castle on a horse in a scene identical to Alucard running up to it. That's about all it has in the way of new cutscenes.

Supposedly the Saturn version isn't what it's cracked up to be. Buggy as hell and playing as Maria is lackluster at best. That's only hearsay, but if they're going to integrate a SoTN it should definitely be the smoothest one. I don't want to sacrifice the entire game just for Maria.

Hehee. I forgot how silly this mix of Vampire Killer and the opening of this area is.
