So I just moved into a new condo. Owner's association had previously negotiated with a cable/internet provider for a discount on packages in exchange for exclusive rights to sell packages to owners in our little insular community.
The package they provided us comes with TiVo. There is basically no way to not use the TiVo with the way they set everything up -- the internet and TV signal comes in off the cable modem, from there it goes into my router, from the router it hits the TiVo, and from there it goes via HDMI into my TV.
I also have an XBox 360 with a LIVE account, and to avoid NAT issues with that, I'd opened the requisite TCP and UDP ports for it (TCP 80, UDP 88, TCP&UDP 3074, TCP&UDP 53).
Today I noticed while watching TV ("Bring it On" on USA HD - shut up, I'm married and don't always get to control the remote) that I'm getting some really lousy reception -- a lot of digital artifacts randomly show up in the picture. Thinking that it might be a router firewall issue, I hunted down a list of the ports TiVo uses.
So of course, the second TCP port it wants on that list is TCP 80, which I've already opened for the Xbox's IP address. The server's set-up page returns an error when I try to add TCP 80 a second time for another IP address.
So what I'm wondering is if this is going to cause a conflict between the two devices? I'd imagine not -- surely I'm not the first person in the world who has tried to use a TiVo and an Xbox on the same network -- but this has reached the limit of my knowledge about home networking, and if there are any potential issues I need to be aware of and any solutions to those problems, I'd love to hear about them!
If you don't mind potentially compromising your network, you could try enabling upnp on your router. According to the internet, this is the solution to having two xbox 360s on the same network. The problem is that I don't know if TiVo is upnp enabled. Still, give it a try.
I've never heard of TV signals going through a modem and router? The way I have my TIVO / Network setup is that I have the cable (co-ax) split, one line goes to the modem the other goes to the TIVO.
Then I have a CAT5 cable going from the Tivo to the Router for it's bi-weekly updates. And the Xbox360 is also plugged in to the Router for internet access.
The modem & router have nothing to do with my TV signal. Are you sure your TV signal isn't coming straight from the co-ax cable? If you are, can you tell me what cable company it is so I can read up on it and be knowledgeable about it.
And I like Bring it On, it's one of my guilty pleasures.
