Nooo I can't find my DS and I finally hit my grove too.
I just beat the Kanto gym leaders and rather than throw myself against E4v2 for the sake of leveling up, I was going through the pokedex one at a time and catching or evolving any Pokémon I didn't have.
No one went out of their way to use the very best, but tended to look at smogon for move sets and such what. Even munkus was using his favourites, but he intimidated a lot of people with his team so it kinda became an arms race.
like 1/2 of nu is bug/flying anyway so it's pretty easy not to use them since I don't like pretty much any bug types. Then the ones like mightyena I would use if game freak would give it something resembling a move pool. You know it's bad when rock smash is one of the better moves for it. There are a lot of quality uus though.

I got that PM right as I was about to go to bed and thought "I'll reply in the morning!" and then I forgot for like three days and panicked and decided to pretend it never happened and I forgot who sent it and it was easier to not check and just assume it was some lurker who would never bother me again and the entire process caused me deep shame and regret
but anyways
it's not like my counsel is all that wise
I mean I only won my first battle the other day
(and I only won because I could PP stall longer than Tsk's Milotic)

Sure you only get 1 BP every ten rounds to start, but the battles are really short and the Matron gives 20 BP on defeat
Then after you get 2 BP for 60 and 3 BP for 70
