The lack of any interesting characters is starting to get to me, but I'm still low on the friendship meter with most of them.

Two Towns is out on vanilla DS, unless the Gamestop I was at this weekend broke street date. Is it the same game as the 3ds one?

Yep. The only real selling point the 3ds has is the play screen is a little wider. The game itself is pretty foregttable however.

I've actually heard really good things about two towns.

I played TT for a bit. It was pretty boring all around. Nothing really grabbed me. They;re definitely trying to mix up the old Harvest Moon formula but this freshness/quality/watering mechanic is just annoying and the jumping is horribly done. Plus the character designs are bleh.

I do love virtual farming though that isn't retarded (read: Farmville)

Yeah, if you didn't like that one you probably won't get into this one much either. It plays like a cross between that and Grand Bazaar.

Looks like you can make a lot of easy money in Tides by making furniture, but there's a problem. Wood takes fucking forever to grow and you only get a bit. Maybe if you have multiple tree minders on an island it's not a problem? Anybody try it out?

Nope, I had a pretty good tree minder right from the get go and I STILL don't have a mature oak tree. The only thing having multiple minders will affect is the type of tree they make. The number they work is determined by happiness and having multiples monsters won't matter. The growing length can only be shortened by pumping more Runeys into the island so it gets above 100%.

But like all Rune Factories, money just isn't a problem here. I just hit Summer last night and I already have my house and crafting areas maxed out.

Yeah I had my house maxed out by the 3rd (4th?) Thursday in Spring, when James had a 20% off sale. I had abused Hot Milk until I could afford to buy materials for Handknit Hats and then Handknit Scarves. Scarves get you a 500g profit per piece if you are patient with the haggling. I'd just like to do less work for more money. Buying gifts for people for whom I can't make them is pricey.

What's the last HM game where money was actually an issue? Even in early games like 64 its always materials that slow down production, not cash.

tree growth sees exponential rise from monster happiness. also, I have two monsters doing tree growth, and while I can't verify it I feel like the trees are growing faster than when I only had one. Also, not only do trees grow faster at higher happiness, but they begin to carry more wood. My oak trees now drop 5-6 per tree when they mature, and my mining has gone up to 15 ore per node, which is so much in materials that I literally can't process it fast enough.

I think it ended when Rune Factory 1 came out. Money's never been a complete issue but in the earlier games it was an issue at the beginning and lasted for a longer while then it does now.

It doesn't speed up growth time but happiness will result in more wood. The first tree I planted had 1 or 2, the later ones are 5-8. Ore works the same way. If you're noticing growth speed it probably has something to do with the amount of Runeys on the island increasing.

RF1 was the real start of them making everything easy. You gain friendship and affection like crazy in that game, not to even mention the heinous abuse of the economy you can participate in with ultra high level crops that pick and water themselves, mined gems that are worth hundreds of thousands, and other crap I'm completely forgetting.

That being said the two real HM games after that have interesting economic challenges added to the beginning and nothing is terribly abusable about them.

Go to the dragon shrine and make a wish for 3000 gold to be teleported. If you've got a decent farm going, that's chump change.

my issue is that I can no longer do this. No spoilers, but the point I'm at is pretty frustrating in terms of distance necessary to travel to gather runeys and options available to me.

Whyyyyy did nobody tell me Rune Factory came out : ( I was not expecting localization for months. Also I have to say that after the disappointment of Two Towns, I am especially looking forward to a better Harvest Moon game.

I don't even think it has anything necessarily to do with the formula difference between the two series, but Rune Factory of late has just been so much more polished in pretty much every aspect (graphics, music, cast, dialogue, voice acting, UI). Two Towns is just hampered so much by such stupid things that shouldn't be present (text speed is ridiculously slow and you can't skip over loads of the repeated stuff every time you do a request, inventory is bad, status screens are decentralized and awful), they've been way more enjoyable. And literally two crops per season to start, unlocking to like four or five only in second and third year of play... Like seriously what : (

But I am excited. Hopefully it has someone as good as Selphy.

and no, Tides is full of boring people. I think even 2 had a more exciting cast.

Man, Two Towns 3DS keeps getting delayed. First until today, and now EB tells me it's been delayed until the 5th and my other go-to local store says it'll be in stock on the 3rd. Noplace in the States appears to have it in stock, either. Get your act together, Natsume!

Why in the world you would play the Harvest Moon/Rune Factory games for the characters is completely beyond me. I play them for the gameplay.

I do too but since you have to interact with these people I prefer the games with the interesting sorts in it. RF1, RFF, RF3.

If this game was merged with RFF's characters I'd never need another game again. Instead of playing it forever though I basically rushed through the regular story mode in Tides and buried it out to sea.

I don't really mind the characters in Tides at all. Only awful ones are Bismark and Beatrix and Kelsey. Maybe Electra because her hair is awful. Everyone else is fairly reasonable. Elena and James are the best hopefully the cute brother/sister combination continues strong.

Biggest problem with the characters is just that they don't interact with each other at all like in 3 and Frontier.

Biggest overall problem is that the actual game was pretty much done after the first oak harvest. I needed to grind those wastebaskets so I could set up my house with rocking tapestries anyway, I shouldn't get infinite money for it. And for all the monster taming focus, item producing monsters are a complete waste of time. It is sad to think just how much better this could be with any semblance of economic scaling or balance : (

But I can accessorize everybody so really all is forgiven.

The characters are fine. It's just hard to compare the cast to RF3, where everyone was batshit insane and therefore interesting/awesome.

I cruised through the main story and am now loaded up with the best weapon of every type and all of the best equipment (all star'd, of course). Next goal is getting as many character events as possible and doing the few fights I haven't done yet. Overall I'd say that Tides is my favorite Rune Factory game, although that's not to say it's without faults. The lack of runeys and the request board system are the main things it has over Frontier.

I really like how the weapons actually seem fairly balanced in this game. I'm always all about abusing the shit out of magic, and that is still very possible in this game, but there are reasons to use the other weapons. I switch to dual blades or my longsword a lot, and I used both katanas and hammers a lot during the story.

I think that must be where I'm stuck, Blaze

Worst part is I've been able to find absolutely no info that tells me what the fuck to do

I've got at least 10 hours of gameplay where I basically did nothing but try and talk to everyone and wander aimlessly around the world before just giving up.

Have you tried GameFAQs? Harvest Moon style games usually have pretty terrible walkthroughs but there's a decent chance you could find the next thing to do.
