    I'm okay with this.

If this future were a Facebook post, I'd press the Like button.

the idea that living in an ultra-hedonistic simulation (at the level that we see in TNG holodecks) is totally fine is perhaps that most anti-humanist thing i can think of that would actually garner substantial debate and split around 50/50 in any room full of people

i don't know how i feel about it

It's incredibly anti-humanist. It's also totally fine! There doesn't need to be a contradiction.

rest assured i am not objecting to anti-humanism

but there is something about the idea of people interacting solely with fictional beings that are utterly in their power for their entire lives that does not sit well

the scenario is pretty largely implausible anyways but it's an interesting idea.

for the record i would have totally stayed in the matrix and let the machines harvest my brain juice.

The counter-argument would be that while this might be fun for a few decades, people would still want the bragging rights of saying they've seen and done "the real thing".

I mean knowing I'm good at simulated sex leaves the nagging question as to how good I'd be with another real person.

And yet at the end of the day, not matter how hot the chick you are banging is, and how great the sex is, you still whack off like crazy.

the thing is that if your holodeck can create AI on the level of TNG holodecks, that's probably going to be sapient life you're creating

and every time you turn off or change the program you're basically murdering all the entities you created

on the other hand, interacting with those entities seems more valid if they are "real" on that level

At the point where we've created machines that can simulate human beings with such unpredictability and verisimilitude without requiring humans to unplug to maintain or repair them... well, at that point we've basically created the post-singularity AI that will replace us.
