oh who am I kidding, as if you guys needed more capital
oh no! How will Mike bounce his ideas around now?
expect lots of mourning
Last scene is Mike bouncing the ball in slow-mo and smiling. Background music: "I'll be missing you" by Puff Daddy
My Re enactment group takes part in that! There is one that happens at Rufford Abbey, this year it coincided with the release of the new Robin Hood film. The fights were great fun, my Norman group vs a Saxon group, us lot in heavy armour the others just in their tunics. Most of their tactics seem to involved jumping on our backs and using the weight of our armour to make us fall over!
A greyscale picture of the ball and some years, The Millionaire, The Mansion, The Yacht in the background.

:^: I was going to make this post
Two reasons, I guess:
1) Historical modeling. Rapier blades more closely resemble, well, rapier blades, than do epee or foil. SCA rapiers are pretty equivalent in terms of length, weight, and handling to the historical weapon. They're not sharp, of course, but they behave the same way. Epee and especially foil are much lighter, and particularly, much much whippier than the historical weapons.
2) Fun. The relatively stiff rapier blades don't allow for whipping over what would otherwise be a proper & effective parry. So, they lead to more dramatic / fun exchanges than a typical sport fencing match.
Really, my injuries were pretty unusual--a typical fighter practice or even war/tournament results in nothing more than a few bruises. No biggie whatsoever; certainly nothing exceptionally more significant than any other competitive physical activity.
epee and foil blades (though flexible under thrusting) might break under the kind of impact you may find in an SCA tournament, which could be really dangerous.
heck, I know a guy who got injured in modern sport fencing from a broken blade... the bulkier SCA blades aren't nearly as fragile.
They are designed not to break like that now.
And really the amount of force you have to apply to snap a blade is fucking ridiculous.
Now I am thinking how much I miss fencing damn you guys!
Satans..... hints..... I'm a mo bro!
Plus I have a beard, not a moustache.

Now he's going to get, like, 27 of them in the mail

Damn I wish I was more associated with people like the PA people instead of going off on this path of "oh hey time to go work in a dull world."
That is a nice line though. You guys are so cute in this episode. Congrats.

That is undeniably adorable.
I'll admit, I'm a bit jealous right now.
That is so rad.
I'm not even kidding.
What spring does with the cherry trees.
Yes they do
I have all sorts of places and contacts to get all sorts of swords, I'm just kinda curious
Starfire also makes pretty good stage swords, and those are cheaper
But this is mostly talking broadswords and such, I'm terribly rooted in the middle ages
Edit: sword, not steel, apparently. Also I'm in love with this katzbalger: http://www.baltimoreknife.com/shortswords.htm
Good question! Real quick, though: there's a difference between SCA combat-capable rapiers, "real" combat-capable rapiers, and wall-hanger/hip-hanger/decorative rapiers. SCA rapiers are designed to flex and have blunt (oval, dulled diamond, or square cross-section) edges. "Real" combat rapiers are stiff and sharp, with full tangs. Wall-hangers are typically stamped (rather than forged) steel, high in chrome content, with decorative handles. Each one has its place, but it's important to match the product to your intended purchase.
In short: if you're interested in fighting with the weapon, ask local fighters for advice before making a purchase. They can guide you to reputable suppliers (Alchem, Darkwood, and so on) and away from dangerous pakistan-stamped junk.
If you're interested in "real" combat-capable weapons, I strongly recommend Albion. They're expert bladesmiths, and know their history. If those guys are too expensive (and they are), then anything made by Angus Trim or Christian Fletcher is your next best bet. Those guys make beautiful, and functional, swords. They're collaborating on a new venture called Valiant Armoury; check it out.
My rapier and (new, not seen in the episode) dagger are custom-made from Alchem. My first rapier was a 1032B-GT "schlaeger". The rest of my gear has been cobbled together from various sites & renn faires over the past 20 years. With the exception of my boots, which are Frye harness boots acquired this Christmas courtesy of Darlyn.
I wish I could marry Mike...
Well, the one we have is considerably more dented to hell, but it looks incredibly familiar
I'm glad this is the case.
The safer blades.
Not the you feeling bad.
Well... maybe.
The secret Kurtz slinking away through the glass moment was so adorable
