Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
Two years back I bought a brand spanking new ATI Radeon 4870 X2 graphics card. It was cheap, had some good stats and my old card was pretty crap. Immediate problems were evident, it was noisy and ran at pretty high temperatures but it ran games really well so I was willing to overlook this. What I later realised though was that when I tried to run a game in a window (like WoW in windowed fullscreen) because I have two monitors and its convenient, the card, courtesy of ATI doesn't have the capacity to detect a 3D application is running and doesn't clock up to compensate and so it runs at its low, power saving capacity and BSOD's.
The store I bought it at wouldn't let me return it because they said it was a driver issue and it would get fixed, it never did. I recently read up a little and apparently its a BIOS issue and I could fix it by setting the card to always run at 3D clocks but that would make it a power hog so I never did.
Thing is, I recently updated the drivers again and now the damn thing is less noisy, which would be great, if it wasn't for the fact that the drivers achieved this by limiting the maximum RPM of the fan so now any game I'm running will flicker and run like crap because its heating up to 100 degrees celsius.
So my question to you guys is, are there any alternative drivers for this piece of shit? Is there any way I can bypass the windowed thing with some manual tools and if no alternative drivers which version should I downgrade to for maximum performance?
