The problem is, I basically have too much riding on the setting being a cohesive thing.

The setting isn't so much darker as it is significantly more grim. Basically, I need to limit my silliness to characters and not the world at large.

Also also, the main reason I'm looking forward to the next game is because I expect stuff like this will happen all the time:
