I didn't play the Pokemon CCG because it was sold out everywhere for the week that I was interested in it.

Also, I had no money for it anyway because I was a child.

Yeah I have a box with all my old Pokemon cards somewhere in the basement. I think when they released the second set was about the time I grew out of it. Now there on something crazy like 45 sets of those cards.

Then again, magic has like 60 sets total.

Man, back when I played, they didn't have these wacky Type whatever decks. You just played.

The whole "you can't play old cards in tournaments" is a hell of a racket they have going. The rules to their own damn game dictate that you must buy new cards.

It makes a little sense though. I mean, some of the cards now are super crazy powerful and some of the old cards/mechanics are insane.

Like Venom counters. 10 bites from 1/1 snakes and you lose the game.

Also it would be a pain in the big ass to have to go back through over 60 sets of cards to make sure your new cards work fine with them.

Then again, I don't play tourney and my friends and I use whatever we have.

I am sympathetic to this. But I am also sympathetic to the idea that metagames eventually settle and mixing it up with new cards lets players try out new strategies and ideas.

So, basically: good in theory, still waaaay too expensive for me to personally justify

Like heres a good example Doubling Season is a card I had 3 of and use in a saporling deck. It worked well and was balanced for that set, but now it could be used with a lot of other cards to cause major problems and need to be banned.

I had a blue and red deck that I called my Firewater deck.

It held true to its name.

When I used it I lost everything.

My Red/Blue deck is based on The Izzet League from Guildpact. It has a lot of cool instant damage cards and cycling, but the key is their Dragon guy who deals a damage every time you draw a card.

"Oh hey, a 1 mana card that lets me draw a card and I use cycling (1) to cast it 9 more times. I draw 9 cards and you take 9 damage."
This was my favorite deck I had except I used ophidians eye to make an infinite loop, which i thought was awesome.

I stopped playing with M10 when they announced they were releasing a new core deck every year.

My wallet cannot handle the pressure :(

I would totally play mtg online if there was say, just a monthly fee and not the need to also buy the cards electronically.

I love ccgs, but I never ever have anyone to play with :( i just like collecting the cards and playing by myself :( magic was aight, but I stopped in high school, but yugioh was so much damn fun. Me and my old college roomie used to play all the time in public. And picked up all the ladies in the playgrounds. Also the Harry potter ccg was boss. I bought like a box of shadowrun ccgs years back, and those were the greatest, but once again, I didn't have anyone to play with. Waa-waa

The whole "you can't play old cards in tournaments" is a hell of a racket they have going. The rules to their own damn game dictate that you must buy new cards.

There are currently four ways to play tournaments:

Standard (aka Type II), Extended, Legacy, and Vintage.

Standard allows you to play with the current expansion, the previous expansion, and the current core set. As of next week though you will be allowed to play with two core sets for the next 3 months.

Extended was just reorganized. Previously you were allowed to play with any sets that had been released within the past 7 years. Now you will only be allowed to play with the past 4 years worth of cards.

Vintage and Legacy formats are similar in that you can play with all of the cards ever printed. Vintage has a short Banned list and an extensive restricted list (restricted cards you can only play with one copy of in your deck). Legacy has a fairly long banned list but no restricted list.

There is also block play in which you can only play with cards from a single expansion.

You can of course play Magic any way you'd like at home and wizards does promote casual play (see the dual decks they have recently been printing, as well as the recently released arch-enemy cards).

I first played Magic as a younger lad, circa Ice Age through Mirage or so, just casually with my brother. You know, you get two colors, I get two colors, build a deck out of what we have.

I started FNMing in the beginning of Ravnica/Time Spiral standard (fall 2006), after finding out a friend of mine played (omgomg I remember this game!) and... was terrible at it, heh. Nowadays, I'm not so bad; just made my first PTQ top 8 a week ago.

PTQ, by the way, stands for Pro Tour Qualifier. Yes, Magic: The Gathering has a pro circuit. Pro Tours are invitation-only tournaments held in various locations around the world three times a year, plus the World Championship. Grand Prix events are large tournaments, open to the public.

Even if I never punch my ticket to the Pro Tour, I'm still having a blast trying. Along with a group of local players, I've traveled to Grand Prix: Boston last summer, and GP: Washington DC in May. (1,503 and 1,932 people, respectively, played in the main event of those tournaments.) Trying to organize enough people to fly out to GP: Portland in September.

I am definitely going to the next PTQ tourny that I can.

My green deck is finally at a point where I know it will do well in the current meta game. It consistently beats Jund, RDW, Naya, and Bant. I haven't run up against a UWr control deck yet or a Mythic Conscription deck though.

I think with 2011 BU Mill is going to become very popular. I'm considering building one myself (as if I could get my hands on enough Jaces though)
