Surprise CD!

edited July 2010 in Debate and/or Discourse
So this week I had to fly to Denver on a business trip and while trolling through the horrors that is terrestrial, I decided making a mix CD would be much better on my ears. Luckily enough I had enough music on my phone to make a pretty diverse CD to listen to. As my trip draws to a close, I have decided to leave the CD in the car in hopes that it makes it to the next person and maybe gives them something new to listen to.

what I am leaving behind is as follows:

Rev Horton Heat - One time for me
Violent Femmes - Kiss off
Placebo - Teenage Angst
Orbital - Halcyon (live)
Nirvana - Where did you sleep last night
Hockey - Too Fake
Pink Martini - Hang on little Tomato
Scissor Sisters - Take your momma out
Smashing Pumpkins - Rocket
Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battle the Pink Robots
Pixies - Wave of Mutilation
NIN - We're in this together
Ween - A tear for eddie
The Rolling Stones - Honky Tonk Women
Pharcyde - Runnin'
Buck 65 - Bandits
Outkast - So Fresh, So clean
Violent Femmes - 36-24-36

If you were in my position and decided to do the same, what kind of music would you leave behind. Limits are that it is an audio CD so you only have 80 minutes to fill. Would you go extreme? would you try to tell a story? Would you try to make a point? How would you entertain?

I'd open with TV on the Radio - "Wolf Like Me" and end with Beatles - "I'll Follow The Sun".

    Tricky...

You can't make the assumption that the next person to get the tape will share your tastes in the slightest. Probably the best you can hope for is not horribly offending them. I'd play it as safe as you're willing to go on the music choices.

You know what this should lead to? A Secret Santa style program where we mail a CD of music to a random person from PA.

The song currently refusing to leave my brain is Electric President's "Ten Thousand Lines."

I'd probably lead with something safe and generically likable, then after a few songs slip into more esoteric, more acquired tastes, then back to safe stuff. The idea would be to hook them enough with the safe choices to push through the other songs out of curiosity.

Cause yeah, if I popped in a mysterious CD and heard death metal, I would hit EJECT and not give it a second thought. If I listened to three songs that were at least okay and then hit death metal, I would, at worst, skip to the next song.

I would not be opposed to it.

Considering shipping something like a CD wouldn't be too bad.

I would be up for it.

The song stuck in my head is the one my daughter made up on the way home today to help her remember what she was serving her stuffed puppy for lunch. It was entitled "Watermelon, chicken, and broccoli."

    It goes like this:

    "Watermelon, chicken and broccoli!"

    (repeat x3000)

    Just wanted to say it.

Fuck yes. This is a great idea.

Edit: This would be worthy of a new thread - I'd like to see who we could get into this.

If I hear guitars it's going straight of the player and out the window. I do not like most music here.

You don't like guitars? Do you listen exclusively to chiptunes and Beethoven or something?

    Can't stand them.

I listen to house, d&b, and classical.
